Malignaggi (30-4, 6 KOs) captured the IBF junior welterweight title in 2007, scoring a 12-round decision over defending champ Lovemore N'dou, successfully defending that belt twice versus Herman Ngoudjo (DEC12) and N'dou (DEC12) in a rematch before relinquishing the title in order to face Ricky Hatton in the fall of 2008. Since moving up to welterweight, Malignaggi is unbeaten with victories against Michael Lozada (TKO6), Jose Miguel Cotto (DEC10) and Orlando Lora (DEC10).

Gunn: Toney’s A Future Hall-Of-Famer, But This Is My Time
With less than two weeks separating Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn from touching gloves with James “Lights Out” Toney in what has the potential to make for the one of the most exciting heavyweight matchups in some time, trash talking, politics and everything else that builds up a great fight has little bearing now.
When Gunn and Toney go to battle April 7 for the IBA Heavyweight Title, all that will matter that night is who the better fighter is, and who emerges as the IBA Heavyweight champion. Their past victories, championships and accolades mean nothing once the bell sounds to commence the first round.

RIP Bery Sugar
By: Michael Woods
He was quick with a joke and to light his own smoke, an omnipresent stogie, was Bert Sugar. And he was the man to go to when you wanted some historical background on the sweet science, preferably delivered with a couple of wry cracks. Author-editor-historian Bert Sugar, for whom the word "raconteur" definitely applies, has died from cardiac arrest after a battle with lung cancer.
Sugar, age 75, was surrounded by family at Northern Westchester Medical Center. Our condolences go out to his wife, Suzanne, especially.

EXPERIENCE IS THE KEY FOR LIAKHOVICH AGAINST JENNINGS
LAS VEGAS - At 35 years of age, former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich, 25-4, 16 KOs, has been around the boxing block a few times. However, the mileage he has logged in the ring figures to be his biggest advantage in his next fight. Liakhovich will take on the younger and perhaps hungrier Bryant Jennings, 27, in a 10-round heavyweight contest on the latest edition of the nationally televised "Fight Night" boxing series on the NBC Sports Network, March 24th from Brooklyn, NY. The broadcast begins at 10PM ET. "The biggest problem for him will be my experience," said Liakhovich.

Middleweight John Thompson Looks To Extend Unbeaten Streak April 18
On April 18 at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, super middleweight John “Apollo Kidd” Thompson will be looking to extend his unbeaten record to 7-0 as he steps into the ring against Jamond Bourgeois.Since turning pro last June, Thompson has been active in his young career, fighting three times to conclude 2011 and three to begin the new year. In the ring he has shown the poise and experience of a fighter with triple the amount of fights he has, and Thompson attributes it to an extensive amateur career.“I’ve been boxing since I was four years old,” said Thompson. “As an amateur I had 111 fights and won nearly every amateur title out there.”With two knockouts in six wins, Thompson feels his biggest weapons are his speed and his brain. “When you first get in the ring, 9 times out of 10 you know something about your opponent, but for the time you might not know anything about him, you have to be able to adapt.

PEREZ PASSES MAJOR TEST WINS IMPRESSIVELY OVER EL GATO
New York, NY (3/8/12) - Earlier tonight from BB King Blues Club and Grill in mid town Manhattan, DiBella Entertainment presented a thrilling nine bout card, that left the sold-out crowd in attendance begging for more.
Headlining the card was an intriguing welterweight match-up between Newark's up-and-coming prospect Alex Perez, who was stepping way up in class as he took on former NABF light welterweight champion, the Bronx's always entertaining, Francisco "El Gato" Figueroa in a 10-round welterweight showdown.

Fresh off his impressive showing on the last Broadway Boxing card in January, Perez was very impressive as he was able to pass a major test winning a well-deserved unanimous decision over Figueroa.
In the early going Perez seemed to be too big and too strong for the much shorter Figueroa. Midway through the fourth a big right hook sent Figueroa to the canvas. Figueroa was able to beat the count though and made it through the round.
As the fight wore on Perez continued to press the action while Figueroa had his moments countering effectively from the outside, which made for a highly entertaining scrap. The fight turned more and more into a war as each round progressed with the tenth and final round seeing both combatants stand toe-to-toe, guns glazing.

Boyd Melson – A Champion in Every Aspect…
By: Chip Mitchell
Sacrifice is defined as the surrender of something for the sake of something (or someone) else. If the dictionary allowed for a picture of a human being to exemplify sacrifice, Boyd Melson would be on a multitude of selection committee’s short lists.
Background
Boyd “The Rainmaker” Melson was born in White Plains, NY in October 1981. He began boxing in the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA). STOP! Boyd is a boxer. Boxers must sacrifice their body, time, mind, and relationships with family and friends. If you truly want to be the best in your craft, anything short of the aforementioned sacrifices could be detrimental.
As an amateur, Boyd won the 48th World Military Boxing Championship and was a four-time champion US Army champion. He graduated from West Point in 2003 with a degree in psychology and a minor in nuclear engineering. STOP! There’s that word sacrifice again. We’ve all made sacrifices at one point. At least I hope that to be the case. However, the men and women of our military risk their lives every day so that we may enjoy the fruits that this country has to offer. Boyd- (and any other military personnel) - if you are out there reading this, THANK YOU for your service!
BROADWAY BOXING OFF TO A BANG IN 2012 SELLS OUT FOR 2ND CONSECUTIVE EVENT
New York, NY (3/5/2012) - On January 21st, DiBella Entertainment (DBE) kicked off the 2012 season of the "Broadway Boxing" series with a thrilling sold-out event at Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Now, less than two months later, the series returns to midtown Manhattan, this time at BB King Blues Club and Grill. While the venue might have changed, the results are the same: a complete sellout.
"Boxing must be rebuilt on the grassroots level, in local communities with local fighters and matchups of interest. I'm proud to announce our second consecutive sellout of our Broadway Boxing series this year," said Lou DiBella.
The card at Roseland featured spectacular knockouts, upsets, fan-friendly wars, and was highlighted by an intriguing crossroads matchup in the main event between an undefeated up-and-coming contender and a former world champion. It had everything you could ask for in a boxing event.
On paper, the upcoming show this Wednesday is shaping up to be the same with another highly anticipated battle in the main event highlighting what promises to be an action-packed undercard. For that much, kudos must go to DBE's matchmaker Joe Quiambao.
Quiambao is a young pup in the game when it comes to matchmaking, having only put together his first card in February 2005. As a former Golden Gloves champion, Quiambao has an eye for the sport and continuously puts together exciting and compelling cards for DBE. Doors open at 6:30PM with the first bout scheduled for 7PM. Below is the complete bout sheet for Wednesday night's show.

Dmitriy Salita, Welterweight Contender: To be honest I don't know anything about Alex Perez. Its good to see Gato back in the ring, he is an exciting NY fighter. He did not take any tune ups. Gato is a veteran and has been in hard fights so no matter who he fights it’s going to be a good, exciting match up.
Bobby Rooney, Light Heavyweight Contender: I'm picking Alex by decision in an entertaining fight. Youth over experience... Alex is one badass southpaw
Jack Obermayer, Fightfax: This is the kind of fight that Perez must win at age 29 to make any sense of his career path. Figueroa is rusty and slipping and is 33. Look for Perez to make a statement, and break out of just being a local hopeful to a boxer who can compete on center stage. He should - must? - stop Figueroa by round five." Jack Obermayer
Serratelli and PerezMarc Abrams, 15Rounds.com/GFL: I like Perez in the fight. Perez by Unanimous Decision.
Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, Lightweight Contender: Perez by KO in 6.
Jerson Ravelo, Super Middleweight Contender: Alex should beat him easily, Figueroa has been inactive plus Alex has the youth on his side.
The Fall and Rise of Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez
Brick City Express....
By: Saul Lelchuk (April 2, 2010) Doghouse Boxing

To say it’s been a long time coming would be an understatement.
All along, most people just said it would never happen at all.
Not after his wild youth on the streets of Newark’s worst projects.
Not after he was rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds just a week after finally turning pro.
Not when the police banged on his door in the middle of the night and arrested him on charges that carried 30 years in prison.
But for two unwavering people in his inner circle – trainer, manager, and pseudo-father Jose Rosario and friend, co-trainer, and attorney Danny Serratelli (See photo of Danny and Alex on this page) – Alex Perez’s rise in boxing hasn’t been a question of if, but when.
So that now – less than a month before Perez’s next bout, when he is slated to fight on the undercard of the Chris Arreola -Tomasz Adamek bout in Ontario, California – to say they are excited would be, again, an understatement.
But to say they were surprised? Not so much.
“With all that stuff behind him, I can see the real Alex Perez again,” says Serratelli. “I am totally confident in his ability, toughness, and work ethic, and I know firsthand from working with him and many other top fighters in the gym over the years that he should eventually be competing on the highest level and fighting the best in his division. Alex is the whole package – he can box, he can punch, he can take it, and he’s huge for a welterweight.”

Boxing is not for the timid or faint of heart. It is a tough, gritty world filled with men exuding the same characteristics. It is not a sport doctors “play” at the club on weekends. You don’t “do” or “play” boxing. In boxing, it is a fight. Perhaps for that reason, so many boxers have backgrounds that required them to fight one way or another for so much of their life.

SHEIKA – FERRANTE FIGHT OF YEAR CANDIDATE NOW AVAILABLE ON GFL
CHESTER, PA (March 1, 2012)—This past Friday night at Harrahs in Chester, PA, Omar Sheika scored a ten round unanimous decision over Tony Ferrante in a bout that many are already hailing as a Fight of the Year candidate.
That bout plus a full five bout undercard is now available on www.gfl.tv for just $9.99 by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Joey_Eye_Presents_Fight_Night_Ferrante_vs_Sheika/1395
Sheika and Ferrante took turns landing hard shots which thrilled the crowd at Harrahs. Ferrante jabbed very well early and was able to land some hard uppercuts. Sheika got through with right hands. The bout was a battle of geography as Ferrante had much success by keeping Sheika pinned up against the ropes while Sheika performed well in the middle of the ring.
Sheika too control in the middle round by landing some furious combinations. With both fighters faces showing the signs of a war, Sheika landed a crunching blow in round nine that snapped the head of Ferrante back. Somehow Ferrante was able to recover and get some work done at the end of the round. Ferrante came back to have a strong round ten but it was not enough to offset an earlier damage done inflicted by Sheika which included an earlier knockdown.
