WHEN “BOOM BOOM” SERVED NOTICE

During the early 1980’s it was said that Youngstown’s Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini was a media manufactured prospect. He was a great story line. A young son trying to win a title that evaded his talented father Lenny “Boom Boom” Mancini. Was he the real deal or was he hype?

That was the question when he entered the ring at the Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio on July 19, 1981 to meet Mexico’s Jose Luis Ramirez. Ray’s NABF lightweight title he had won just a month before would be on the line. What was really on the line was his reputation. Was he a future champion or a public relations creation? Ramirez was no joke. He would enter the ring with a 71-3 record. On November 14, 1980 he had floored the great Alexis Arguello and ended up losing a very controversial decision. Ramirez was a bonafide contender and was considered a very stern test for the young Mancini.

Interview with Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao

"I have something I want to say. I am not afraid of anyone. I am a fighter; I am not a business man; I'm a fighter. I hope everyone understands this and on May 7 in (Las) Vegas, Shane Mosley will know this," barked a usually subdued Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

In a departure from his usual PPV events, this title fight will broadcast live on SHOWTIME NETWORK PPV as opposed to HBO PPV, or as it should now be called, "the house that Manny built."

"I understand Mosley said I don't have defense at all. But this isn't true," said Pacquiao.

"I want you to write this, please. Telleveryone I do have defense I just rather fight. I don't want to dance and run - I want to fight," he said.

Maidana Wins the Fight, Morales wins the crowd

By: Gabriel Montoya, from Maxboxing.com (April 10, 2011) Special to Doghouse Boxing (Photo © German Villasenor, DHB)

Legends have a way of pulling out that one last great performance. Returning Mexican great Erik “El terrible” Morales did just that on Saturday night at the MGM Grand garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV as he headlined the Golden Boy Promotions “Action Heroes” HBP PPV against Argentinean power puncher Marcos Maidana. With zero vision in his right eye, out of his weight class and years past his prime, Morales showed us all why we loved watching him in his glory days and why we’d all pay to watch him again.

Big Night of Boxing from Coast-to-Coast: Morales continues his comeback in Vegas; Adamek prepares for a title fight in Newark

By Les Dowgier

Tonight, the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada will play host to several intriguing and very exciting fights.

The fight card at the MGM Grand is stacked with marquee names, if not necessarily marquee match ups. The card will see the likes of Erik Morales, Marcos Maidana, Robert Guerrero, Michael Katsidis, James Kirkland, Paulie Malignaggi and Nate Campbell.

In the main event, one of the living legends of Mexican boxing, Erik “El Terrible” Morales, 51-6, 35KOs, will square off against the highly entertaining and always dangerous Argentine, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, 29-2, 27 KOs. Despite the outstanding resume and greater experience of Morales, Maidana is the betting favorite, as well he should be. Maidana is in the prime of his career, is seven year Morales’s junior and is coming off perhaps the biggest fight of his career, which, despite being a loss, is a fight in which Maidana looked terrific. As many boxing pundits are saying, this may be a situation where a once great fighter takes one fight too many and pays a price for it.

Quotes From Adamek - McBride Final Press Conference Brick City Bar and Grill, Newark, NJ - April 6, 2011

Credit: Mike Gladysz
Kathy Duva:
"This is a very important fight and we've seen lots of fighters in this situation look past the guy in front of him. In this situation Tomasz is putting a lot on the line and we really have got to give him all the respect in the world for continuing to stay active and wanting to challenge himself as much as he can, before he gets to that fight he's been working for literally his whole life."

"This man (McBride) pretty much made a name for himself by scoring one of the biggest upsets ever and ending Mike Tyson's career. We are not taking that lightly at all and nor should anyone else."

Adamek vs. McBride Undercard

Brooklyn's Sadam "World Kid" Ali, 11-0, 6 KO's, will step up into the co-feature on Saturday, April 9th vs. tough Javier Perez, of Ponce, Puerto Rico, when Tomasz Adamek faces Kevin McBride at Newark's Prudential Center.

Apparently, Main Events matchmakers, Russell Peltz and Jolene Mizzone, have had their work cut out for them trying to match up the former Olympic standout. It seems Ali has struck fear in the hearts of most of the local welterwieght boxers. Mizzone said, "It's ridiculous, you would think his first name was Muhammad!" Perez, who in his last fight scored a unanimous decision over Alexis Cintron, says he has no problem taking on Ali.

RIP Gill Clancy

It saddened me to learn that Hall of Fame boxing trainer and commentator, Gil Clancy, passed away this morning. Gil worked with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman as well as Gerry Cooney in his bout with Foreman. He was the first and only trainer of Emile Griffith, and led him to win both the welterweight and middleweight championships of the world. He was a class act and an asset to the great sport of boxing. He will surely be missed. May he rest in peace.
