It's been another memorable year for Boxing.
We un-covered a few hopefuls who were hidden in the shadows (ANDRE WARD) as quickly and as stunningly as some were unveiled to us as paper-tigers (ANTONIO MARGARITO).
Fighters stepped up to the plate to seize their long awaited belts (DAVID HAYE) as suddenly as old champions were handed their walking papers (ROY JONES).
A few left us for good.

Here's a short list of Boxing legends who passed away in '09:
* JOSE TORRES, 1/19
* INGEMAR JOHANSSON, 1/30
* GREG PAGE, 4/27
* ALEXIS ARGUELLO, 7/1
* ARTURO GATTI, 7/11
* VERNON FORREST, 7/25
* TONY THORNTON, 9/10

Most of our memories linked to these champs are based on the legacies they've left behind in the world of Boxing. All of the soldiers they've constructed and inspired both IN and out of the square circle will always miss them.

A few HIGH-LITES in Boxing during 2009:

~ANDRE BERTO/LOUIS COLLAZO~
> Berto defended his WBC Welterweight Title by a very-VERY thin margin against NY fighter Collazo. Many people (including Collazo) thought that the south-paw barrage leveled by the New Yorker would be enough to sway the judges. The fight was close but Berto retained his title.

~PAUL WILLIAMS/SERGIO MARTINEZ~
> Both fighters dropped each other to the canvas early in the fight. This was a prelude of what was to come. Martinez countered wonderfully on the tall and lanky fellow southpaw Williams. It was enough to win the cheers of most of the crowd - but not most of the judges.

~JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ/JUAN DIAZ~
> This was my favorite fight of the year and one of the best I've seen EVER. Diaz was the younger of the two and he showed his youth early on by keeping Marquez pinned on the ropes. Although Marquez landed nice clean shots off the ropes, it was Diaz who was in command of the action. Through the fight each guy staggered the other while Diaz repeatedly taunted Marquez after the bell. You began to sense that the wars which Marquez sustained with Pacquio had taken their toll on the seasoned x-champion. Marquez continuously back-pedaled on the ever chasing Diaz while rope burns appeared like welts on his back and shoulders. Diaz never let up. Finally in round 8 right before the bell, Marquez lands a left hook that rocks Diaz. A few seconds later amidst a slew of bombs by each fighter, a left uppercut lands on Diaz that hurls him through the ropes and on to the judges table. His fighters heart stood him back on his feet - only to be dropped one last final time seconds later. MAX KELLERMAN: "What we just saw was a really good young fighter knocked out by a great old fighter."

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2010!
