Bobby Rooney, Jason Escalera Shine in North Bergen

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (Thursday, August 27th, 2009) - Pound 4 Pound Promotions continued it's tradition of exciting, crowd-pleasing boxing events Thursday night with a six-bout show at North Bergen, NJ's Schuetzen Park.

The original main event, featuring former world title challenger Mike Arnaoutis against Troy Browning was scrapped when Browning withdrew due to illness. Last minute replacement Ilido Julio was deemed ineligible due to a weight discrepancy. Seeking the spotlight left by the hole in the card, the remaining bouts stepped up to impress and made the company's ninth event one of it's most memorable.

Mayweather, Jr. vs Marquez: Taking The Path of Least Resistance

By: Christian Cruz

When former P4P numero uno and welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr (39-0-0) announced his sudden retirement after his last fight in 2007, it was met with criticism, and was seen as an eventual escape from facing real competition in a division littered with quality oppositions. His overall career, was actually widely criticized, even though it bannered a flawless record of no losses and world championship belts in three different classes. For someone blessed with abundant talent, great boxing skills, and good pedigree, Mayweather, Jr. was perceived to have been only looking for easy money fights instead of fighting the best available opposition, especially during his stint at the welterweight division. Potential big fights with Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and even Paul Williams were on the horizon after his victory versus Junior Welterweight champ Ricky Hatton, but as what happened, he retired prematurely.

His wish was granted today.

The CSAC met today in Los Angeles and determined that an accidental head butt in round three that left a serious gash over Campbell’s left eye should have been ruled no contest after the fight was stopped on advice of the ringside physician after the round.

Paulie and the Judges: What Can be Done?

By: Ted Sares - Boxers work too hard and take too many chances," he said. "It is important this sport is administered right. --Teddy Atlas

The first thing I tell people watching on television is to turn off the sound…The reason is you're being led, even if you're being led correctly, by what the commentators are saying --Bert Sugar.

The fact that many fight fans have been turned away by the blatantly wrong judging speaks to the degree to which these issues must be addressed. --David Chen

Controversial decisions are an inherent part of boxing and boxing has an abundance of systemic flaws, but blatantly outrageous scorecards need to be minimized.. Referring to the awful decision in the Emanuel Augustus -Courtney Burton bout in Michigan, Teddy Atlas said,” We've seen some horrific decisions, and we don't see them once every millennium…If you're any kind of boxing fan, you see them much too often. If it's several times a year, it's too much, but it's way beyond that. Every month, you're going to see a bad decision if you watch enough boxing." Taken from “Are there real answers to questionable decisions?” By Kieran Mulvaney Special to ESPN.com (April 6, 2006).

Juan Diaz Wins Controversial Decision Over Malignaggi

By: Danny Serratelli

People said Paulie Malignaggi was going into this fight with Juan Diaz to lose. They said he was making excuses about the size and padding in the ring, the purse, the judges, the catchweight, and the referee. It turned out that Malignaggi was speaking from the heart and telling the truth. His statements all proved to be true. Juan Diaz is a top fighter who came to fight and put the pressure on Malignaggi for all 12 rounds. Malignaggi fought his best fight since he captured the title against Lovemore Ndou.

Malignaggi moved well in a small ring and did not allow Diaz to get set for most of the fight. While he took some punches that appeared to be hard from Diaz, for most of the fight he moved well and displayed superior ring generalship. He used a dominant jab and a decent one-two behind great movement to keep Diaz off balance for most of the night.

Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez: “Have Gloves Will Travel”!

By: Ken Hissner, Doghouse Boxing (Aug 17, 2009)

Alex Perez is in his fifth year of boxing with only 10 fights. He claims “no one wants to fight me”. Bad enough he is 6:01 and 147#, but a southpaw on top of that. He had an outstanding amateur career with a 56-3 record fighting out of Newark, New Jersey.

What this writer hopes to do is stir up some interest to really find out just how good Perez is. I covered a fight of his at the Blue Horizon, in Philly. It was his 9th fight and he was fighting Darien Ford, 11-15, who had just fought to a No Contest with Mike “No Joke” Stewart, due to opening his forehead in the 3rd round of their fight. Prior to that Ford had wins over Ivan Robinson and former light welterweight champion Charles Murray. Perez had received a cut over an eye from a head butt and came back in the next round to receive another cut under an eye from a head butt. After the second one, he threw Ford to the canvas where he suffered a dislocated shoulder and couldn’t continue. The commission called it a No Contest. This was September of 2007.

After that he fought in December defeating Cory Peterson, 7-1, of Bay City, Michigan, at the Robert Treat Hotel, in Newark over 6 rounds. He had wins over Jonathan Tubbs and Patrick Byrd. “That was a tough fight. I hurt him but he kept coming,” said Perez.

It would be 15 months before he had his next fight. That was in March of this year defeating Laureano Laracuente, 5-1-1, over 10 rounds for the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) welterweight title. He had to go all the way to San Sebastian, Puerto Rico for that fight. “I scored a knockdown in the 5th round. I wasn’t sure if I would need a knockout to win, he ran the whole fight,” said Perez. Scores were 97-92, 96-93 and 96-94 in his favor.

ATTILIO "ROCKY" CASTELLANI

He may have been one of the best middleweights to never hold a title. He was a ranked contender for almost a decade but he received only one title shot. That was fairly late in his fine career. He fought in the days when there only eight weight divisions with ONE champion per division. By today's standards Attilio "Rocky" Castellani would have easily won a piece of a title.

Rocky was born on May 28, 1927 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He would die in the same town 81 years later. Rocky made his professional debut on February 14, 1944 fighting to a six round draw. He would lose his next two fights by knockout. It's very hard to believe at this point that Rocky would one day become a top contender. He was tenacious though and he soon began to win more then he lost. He was stopped in four rounds by Billy Kilroy in 1946.He would only be halted one more time in his career and that was not until 1952. In fact Rocky was only defeated by kayo only four times in 83 career battles. Seeing the competition he faced, that is quite amazing!

Despite numerous reports to the contrary, according to a recent interview given by long time Adamek manager Ziggy Rozalski, the fight between his charge and Andrew Golota is still on. Apparently, Rozalski recently met with Golota’s promoter Don King and the two have worked out the terms of the deal. Furthermore, Golota has apparently already consented in writing (as required by his promotional contract) to allow King to make the fight.

PACQUIAO-COTTO: CALLING IT AS IT IS

By: Christopher Cruz

Never say never, as they say. With the on—again off—again nature of negotiations of the Manny Pacquiao—Miguel Cotto war tentatively set on November 14, 2009 (MGM Grand in Las Vegas), nearly everyone must be reeling from all the contradicting headlines of major boxing and news websites in the past few weeks.

This hellacious turn of events began innocently enough. After initial demands were laid out by both camps, lone promoter Top Rank head Bob Arum went on a holiday with the probable plan to let the camps stew a bit and make some of the blatantly unrealistic demands go away naturally. A major sticking point cropped up and both parties stuck to their guns: The Catch-Weight. Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach insisted on 142-143 lbs. citing his ward’s last fight where he weighed in at only 138lbs. while Cotto’s doctor declared 145 lbs. as the lowest Miguel could go without getting severely dehydrated beyond safe levels.

At this point, Arum issued a virtual non-negotiable clause of the proposed fight by decreeing the fight will be at 145 lbs. and adding that both camps had already agreed to it. This move, depending on whether the fight gets made or not, will turn out to be either a stroke of genius or one of the biggest blunders a big-time promoter has ever made in the history of boxing.

Mike Jones and Jerson Ravelo Victorious in Atlantic City

By: Danny Serratelli

Welterweight contender Mike Jones, 18-0, 15 KO's won a unanimous 10-round decision over a game opponent in Lennin Arroyo, 20-10-1,4 KO's to defend his NABA title on Saturday night at Bally’s Atlantic City. Jones hurt Arroyo several times in the fight, but Arroyo showed a good chin and heart in going the 10 round distance with Jones who gave a very solid performance. Scores were 99-91, 99-91, 98-92. Jones has a lot of potential and upside and it will be interesting to see who he fights next.

The Brick City's Dominican Olympian super-middleweight contender Jerson Ravelo, 20-4, 12 KO's picked up his 20th win in the co feature. Ravelo took the fight on a few days notice and easily defeated Willis Lockett, 12-9, 5 KO's. It is amazing that Lockett used to compete at cruiserweight and even heavyweight, so his record is deceiving. Ravelo was the much bigger man and used a solid jab and good movement to keep Lockett off balance all night. After 8 rounds the scores were 80-72, 79-73, and 77-75. Ravelo was excited to be back in the ring and is eager to fight again as soon as possible.

Alexis Arguello-Julio Cesar Chavez

By: Jim Amato

DREAM FIGHTS...You hear and read about them all the time. How would Ali have done against Dempsey, Louis or Marciano? How would Roy Jones Jr. have fared against Bobby Foster? Could Bernard Hopkins hold his own with Marvelous Marv?

Interesting scenarios and I'm sure we all have our opinions. We as fans are entitled to these opinions. My how they differ. We will never know if Sugar Ray Robinson could have beat Sugar Ray Leonard or if Willie Pep could have outslicked Salvador Sanchez but damn it sure is fun to argue about it ! With that said I'd like to venture into who would have won if Alexis Arguello and Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez would have met at 130 or 135 pounds?

TYSON DVD

Tyson, a no-holds-barred portrait of the legendary and controversial former heavyweight champion, arrives on Blu-ray High Def and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on August 18. Oscar® nominated writer/director James Toback (Bugsy)[i], who earned a special ‘Regard Knockout Award’ after last year’s Cannes Film Festival screening, directs Tyson, which is entirely narrated by the champ himself. The film tells the story of a young boy who rose from the most impoverished circumstances, soared to unlimited heights, then -- like a character in a classical tragedy -- was destroyed by his own arrogance and hubris.

Tyson’s bonus features include a new featurette “A Day in the Life” with Toback, red carpet premiere footage and commentary.

Jones-Lacy PPV card complete four title fights featured Aug. 15 “Hook City” PPV in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss. (August 7, 2009) – “Hook City,” headlined by 8-time world champion Roy “Captain Hook” Jones, Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) and former 2-time super middleweight world title-holder Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy (25-2, 17 KOs), will feature four, exciting title fights.

In addition to being a well matched, entertainment valued promotion, “Hook City” has a slew of interesting storylines in each of its four PPV title fights on August 15th, which includes famous boxing “hookers,” wide-eyed dreamers, legitimate contenders and promising prospects.

The “Hook City” pay-per-view show, presented by Square Ring Promotions in association with Left Hook Promotions and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, is being distributed by Square Ring Promotions, Inc. at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network for a suggested retail price of $34.95, as well as on Super Channel in Canada.

Tickets, priced at $150.00, $125.00, $100.00, $75.00, $50.00 & $25.00 are on sale and available at all Ticketmaster locations by calling 800.745.3000, on line at Ticketmaster.com and at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum box office.

"We're proud to bring boxing fans such a great show from top to bottom," Square Ring Promotions CEO John Wirt said. "We have four title fights featuring three former world champions. 'Hook City' has a power-packed line-up of highly competitive fights and entertaining fighters."

Hall of Fame-bound Jones is known for possessing one of boxing’s all-time greatest hooks, while Lacy’s nickname is, aptly put, “Left Hook.” Which one is the better hooker? That will be determined in Aug. 15 when Jones defends his NABO light heavyweight crown in the 12-round main event. The loser will be busted in “Hook City.”

Two-time world champion Danny “Green Machine” Green (26-3, 23 KOs), the power-puncher from Down Under, dreams of fighting Jones later this year in Australia. His opponent in the 12-round IBO cruiserweight title fight is South American light heavyweight title-holder Julio Cesar “La Furia” Dominguez (20-4-1, 14 KOs), who has fought in relative obscurity in his native Argentina. All he’s been dreaming about is knocking out Green. Which one’s dream will come true? That, too, will be decided in “Hook City.”

NABO cruiserweight champion B.J. “El Peligroso” Flores (23-0-1, 14 KOs) has a display case filled with regional title belts. He’s rated as high as No. 3 by the WBO and No. 6 by the WBA and positioned for a major world title fight. Standing in his way in “Hook City” is former world title challenger Epifanio “Diamente” Mendoza (29-7-1, 25 KOs), the Colombian hit man who specializes in putting opponents to sleep, as well as knocking-off unbeaten contenders.

Two highly-regarded lightweight prospects -- Verquan “The Show” Kimbrough (21-1-2, 7 KOs) and challenger Jason “American Boy” Litzau (24-2, 20 KOs) -- go toe-to-toe in “Hook City” in a 10-round Special Attraction for the vacant NABF belt. Both have rich amateur pedigrees and Kimbrough is trying to get where Litzau has been and plans to return -- a world title shot. All bouts are subject to change.

Joan Guzman’s Roads to Recovery

By: Christian Cruz
www.Brickcityboxing.com

The recent news that Joan Guzman, (29-0, 17 KOs), from the Dominican Republic has just signed with Golden Boy Promotions should bring added excitement to a loaded division already filled up with promising upstarts, decent veterans, and an elite champion.

Boasting a perfect record of 29 wins out of 29 fights, and having won titles in the junior featherweight, featherweight, and junior lightweight divisions, Guzman is considered as one of the best fighters in the lower weight divisions. His athleticism, coupled with his fast hands and reflexes, makes him an elusive target for most of his opponents. His superior boxing skills allow him to dictate the pace of the fight and can box either from the outside or inside from time to time. Another strength is his chin, which so far, at this point, has proven it can take the best shots from any punchers Guzman has faced. Ironically, his vaunted power from either hand, which gave him the moniker “Little Tyson” during his stay at 122, seems to have left him since he moved up to higher divisions.

MOHEGAN SUN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING RESULTS

On Saturday night, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing put together an exciting seven bout card before a packed house at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT.

In the main event Star Boxing's IBF #2 rated welterweight, Delvin Rodriguez battled IBF #3 rated Isaac Hlatshwayo for the vacant IBF Welterweight Championship of the World. The fight was a rematch of their highly entertaining draw that took place back in November of last year.

The fight started well for Rodriguez as he was the much busier fighter, landing clean shots to both the head and body of the South African Hlatshwayo. In the second, a right hand staggered Hlatshwayo, but he showed guts as he continued to press forward, taking some big shots from Rodriguez in the process.

The Irony of Nate Campbell

Commentary

By: Christopher Roche

Nate Campbell’s biggest win of his career came in large part because his opponent was viciously cut, but Juan Diaz did not quit in that memorable bout in Mexico. Diaz fought like a true warrior, and under the strain of his breakup with Don King, the Baby Bull left everything in the ring, including his title belts.

Tonight, on Showtime Championship Boxing, the tables were turned on Campbell, and he was the one faced with a bad cut. Campbell, unlike Diaz, quickly opted out, as he pleaded with his corner that he could not see.
