Main Events Arturo Gatti Statement

With all due respect to the Brazilian authorities, we knew Arturo Gatti and we do not believe that he took his own life. Members of Arturo’s family, along with his boxing manager Pat Lynch, are conducting their own investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. We believe that once the results of that investigation are revealed, the truth will come to light and justice will be done.

Arturo Gatti Memorial Mass Tomorrow, Thursday, July 30th

By: Main Events

Friends and fans of Arturo “Thunder” Gatti are invited to attend a memorial Mass that will be held in his honor on Thursday evening, July 30th at 7 p.m. St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic in Jersey City.

“Since it was not possible for so many of Arturo’s friends and fans in the US to attend his funeral this past weekend in Montreal, we think that it is only right to give them the opportunity to celebrate Arturo’s life and pay their respects next Thursday at St. John’s,” said Gatti’s boxing manager and mentor, Pat Lynch.

“Arturo was much more to me than a business associate or even a friend,” said Lynch, who handled Gatti throughout his 17-year professional boxing career. “I am humbled and honored by the fact that he considered me to be his second father. I don’t know if I will ever get over losing him.”

Golota v. Adamek - October 10th

by Leszek Dowgier

According to various sources, on October 10th of this year, in a yet to be determined city in Poland, IBF and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight champion Tomasz “Goral” Adamek will square off against former top heavyweight contender, and countryman, Andzej Golota.

Adamek 38-1 (26 KOs), who is coming off a stoppage victory against the over matched but very game Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn, has been talking about moving up to heavyweight, and specifically fighting Golota, for quite some time now. The reason this fight has finally become a reality is due to the fact that the Polish television network Polsat has apparently produced a substantial (and undisclosed) amount of money in order to make this fight happen.

Ireland Comes to Brawl

Anthony Gangemi wins a decision

By: Bobby Breen

July 27, 2009. A team of amateur boxer’s from Ireland recently came to the NY/NJ Metro area to compete against our amateur boxers. Arranged and coordinated by the Dover Boxing Club of Dover, NJ the Ireland team boxed in New Jersey Friday night July 17th and Saturday July 18th in Long Island, NY. The Friday night show was held at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, NJ.

Put together by Ed Leahy and Rich Stoltenborg who run the Dover Boxing Club gym, this event was made possible by many sponsors. I do not have a complete list of those sponsors but many thanks go out to them for making this show a reality. A special thanks goes out to the Dr. Teddy Atlas Foundation for their participation. It is a great opportunity for young amateur boxers to compete against each other from another country.

Tomasz Adamek vs Bobby Gunn in Retrospect…Action Halted With Gunn’s Ammo Locked and Loaded

By: James Thurston Wallstreet III

On July 11th, 2009 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Bobby Gunn tried to snatch the IBF and Ring Magazine Championship from the grasp of Tomasz Adamek. Instead the Ringside Doctor snatched away what could have been a Rocky like story from the grasp of Bobby Gunn. Let me make this clear, I am not saying that Mr. Gunn would have won or even gone the distance, but he was the victim of a disgusting premature stoppage.
In my last article I touched on this fight when going over the investments people should make. I found it ludicrous that a World Title fight had the over/under of 4.5, and it was paying out a dividend of 1.5/1. This is what I stated:

“Investment Opportunity- Tomasz Adamek (-2500) vs Bobby Gunn (+1100)
Investment Decision- I said before I was not going to touch this fight due to hometown favorites, but the over/under has caught my eye. I am pretty much positive it will make it to the 5th round. My final decision is $100 on over 4.5 (+175).”

CM: Last time out versus Manuel Guzman, you weren’t able to record a knockout for the first time in your professional career. How disappointed were you?

JS: I wasn’t really disappointed man, I just wanted to show everybody I could go 8 rounds… a tough 8 rounds. So it let everybody know I could get the win. I got a chin as everybody saw so it was a good fight.

“Super Six” x 2

By Leszek Dowgier

Showtime’s announcement of their “Super-Six” boxing tournament has created quite a bit of excitement in the boxing world, and quite understandably. Why shouldn’t boxing fans be excited about a tournament which will pit some of the best fighters from a talent rich division against one another in numerous very exciting fights? However, this tournament has also created some anger and disappointment, both from fans who wonder why their favorite fighters aren’t involved, and from the camps of Super Middleweights who, for one reason or another, weren’t invited to the tournament. The latest in the line of spurned fighters is former Contender winner and current IBO Super Middleweight champion, Sakio Bika.

Vernon Forrest Reportedly Shot Dead in Atlanta

By: Christopher Roche

July 2009 is proving to be one of the worst months in terms of athletes violently passing away. Former welterweight and junior-middleweight title holder Vernon Forrest is now reportedly part of that ominous list, which includes Steve McNair, Alexis Arguello and Arturo Gatti.

ESPN.com is reporting this morning that Forrest was putting air in the tires of his Jaguar at an Atlanta gas station, when two armed men confronted him, in an attempted carjacking. Forrest, who was also armed, chased the men, only to be shot dead. Forrest, whose girlfriend's young son was also in the car, was only 38 years old.

My Friend Arturo Gatti is Gone

By: Dr. Johnny Benjamin, Sports doctor, orthopedic surgeon

Life, despite its beauty, can be devastatingly cruel. First the world lost my acquaintance Steve McNair and now I've lost my dear friend Arturo. I know that no one is supposed to be here forever; we all knew that Arturo had been through far too many wars to live until 100 but I certainly never expected this.

Arturo was not complicated but he was definitely complex. What you saw is what you got. He had no pretense. There were just so many facets to him; so many layers. He was somewhere between sinner and saint. When he was good, which fortunately was the vast majority of the time; he could be generous to a fault but when he wanted to be bad...Look out.

He was intensely private and guarded; so there were not a lot of long, soul searching conversations. Since he wore his heart on his sleeve, those close to him saw glimpses deep within.

Arturo Gatti Memorial in Jersey City

Note-There will be another mass and friends and fans of Arturo “Thunder” Gatti are invited to attend a memorial Mass that will be held in his honor on Thursday evening, July 30th at 7 p.m. St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic in Jersey City.

A memorial mass was held today for Arturo Gatti in Jersey City at St. Nick’s Church. It was a very intimate farewell to Jersey City's favorite son. When the mass concluded several people spoke about Arturo, mostly about how he was all heart both inside and outside of the ring. His 3-year old daughter Sophia showed that she inherited some of papa's determination as she sung the alphabet song while her mother Erica, was recalling some fond memories of her time with Arturo. Sophia didn't get through the first couple times, but made sure she had the opportunity to do the entire alaphabet and song. She made her papa proud becasue she insisted on finishing which brought many in the church to tears. She answered her mother that her papa was in the clouds and she wanted to sing with him.

Several people spoke at the conclusion of mass including, Jersey City Mayor Jerimiah Healy and Councilman Bill Gauhan who is a big boxing fan. Mario Costa, the owner of the Ringside read a letter from Mike Tyson about Arturo and also shared some personal stories. Arturo's big brother Joe thanked everyone for coming. A speaker of note was photographer/friend Tommy Casino. He remembered that no one could touch Arturo early in his pro career. He was a very slick boxer when he wanted to be and Tom recalled asking him why he would bang so much as his career progressed. Arturo told him that he fought for the people and that is what they come to see. People always speak of Arturo as a warrior with a heart as big as you can have one, but Casino was correct in pointing out how good of a boxer Arturo was.

New Jersey Hall of Fame president Henry Hascup also spoke about Arturo and all of amazing accomplishments. He explained that no fighter ever won "NJ Fighter of the Year" honors more than twice, Arturo won it 6 times. The award will now bear Arturo's name and Arturo will be inducted into the NJ Hall of Fame in November. Like many of the speakers said, there are no words that can do justice to how much Arturo meant to his family, friends, and fans.

Kermit Cintron Ready To Fight Shane Mosley This Fall...

July 22 - Kermit Cintron has caught wind of Shane Mosley’s struggles to make a fight, and like the rest of the boxing world, he doesn’t want to see “Sugar” Shane sit on the shelf for the rest of the year. So, Kermit wants Shane and the rest of the world to know he is ready to step up and make a fight between two of the world’s best welterweights.

With Cintron (31-2-1, 27 KOs) and Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) both coming off wins considered amongst the biggest of their respective careers – for Cintron, a 12-round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Alfredo Angulo, and for Mosley, a 9th round knockout over consensus welterweight champion Antonio Margarito – there is no time like the present for the two combatants to get it on.

“I feel like right now it makes sense,” said Cintron. “With Cotto fighting Pacquiao and Mayweather fighting Marquez, I don’t see why he wouldn’t take a fight with me.”

Cintron’s promoter Lou DiBella believes his charge is up to the challenge of a fight with Mosley and it wouldn’t take much effort from either end to get the job done.

“Mosley has always looked to face the stiffest competition and right now Kermit is one of the toughest challenges available,” said DiBella. “Kermit is willing to fight anywhere from 147 to 154 pounds. I don’t think we would have to spend significant time negotiating to make a fight between these two great warriors.”

Besides the obvious reasons Cintron and Mosley would make for such a compelling fight, it would be a clash between two fighters who have made long careers of all-action fights.

Arturo Gatti Memorial Mass

“Arturo Gatti was a living legend whose passion in the ring was exceeded only by his great loyalty to the people he truly loved and cared for,” Kathy Duva of Gatti’s longtime promoter, Main Events, said. “Words are inadequate to describe the unspeakable sadness of losing him this way. Final bell sounds for former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti

By: Bill Beacon (CP)

MONTREAL — Arturo Gatti got one last standing ovation on Monday as his family and the boxing world paid tribute to the former world champion from Montreal whose death at a Brazilian resort on July 11 remains a mystery.

An overflow crowd of about 1,000 packed Notre Dame de la Defense church in a north-end Italian neighbourhood for the funeral of one of the sport's most spectacular fighters. Gatti was 37 when he died, only two years after his retirement from the ring.

Among the many active and retired boxers on hand was (Irish) Mickey Ward, who became friends with Gatti after their trilogy of classic brawls in 2002 and 2003. He said Gatti had planned to visit him at his home near Boston later this month.

"It's unfortunate because he's just too young for this to happen," Ward said as he fought off tears after the service. "It's a sad day.

WHY DURAN WOULD HAVE GOT PAST PACMAN

By: Jim Amato

With all due credit, Manny Pacquiao is on top of today's boxing world. He is the "Man". His destruction of Oscar De La Hoya drove the "Golden Boy" into retirement and put Manny as the #1 fighter pound for pound in the world today. His hammer job on the formidable Ricky Hatton put an exclamation point on his current status.

What if there was a fighter named Roberto Duran roaming the boxing landscape today ? I'm talking about a lean, fit and motivated Duran. The Duran who defeated the talented Esteban DeJesus in their rubber match at 135 pounds. The Duran that practically shut out the gritty Carlos Palomino and handed the gifted Sugar Ray Leonard his first loss at 147 pounds. How would Manny match up with THAT Duran?

Baltimore Pro Boxing to Honor Late Steve McNair with Ten Count on July 25

Baltimore, MD - Steve McNair never wrapped his hands, hit a heavy bag, or starved himself to make weight but in many ways, he was just like a model pugilist. A hard working community oriented athlete who refused to let injuries take him off his game, McNair was known for much more than winning the 2003 NFL co-MVP.

A fan favorite during his short tenure in Baltimore, McNair led the Ravens to a franchise best 13-3 in 2006. Still a visible figure in the community with The Steve McNair Foundation and Gridiron 9 Restaurant, McNair was far from forgotten when he retired after the 2007 season. On July 4, McNair’s life was tragically cut short in Nashville, Tennessee. The sad news of McNair’s passing was not only disheartening for his family and former teammates but also to promoter Jake Smith of Baltimore Pro Boxing. A diehard Ravens fan, Smith proudly wore his #9 McNair jersey on any given Sunday.

HBO to honor Arturo Gatti by replaying Micky Ward trilogy

After televising 21 of Arturo Gatti’s riveting portfolio of professional prizefights from 1995 to 2007, HBO Sports will commemorate the career of former two-time world champion Arturo Gatti, with a special presentation of his classic trilogy when ARTURO GATTI VS. MICKY WARD I, II & III is seen FRIDAY, JULY 17 (9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO2 and Saturday, July 18 (10:15 a.m. ET/PT) on the main HBO service. The three fights will air consecutively on both days.

HBO On Demand availability: July 20 – Aug. 16.

Regarded by boxing historians as one of the great trilogies in boxing history, the three-fight series between the two junior welterweights featured no belts or championships on the line, but included 30 total rounds of non-stop action, remarkable displays of will and fortitude and unparalleled sportsmanship. The series began on May 18, 2002 in Uncasville, Conn. as an HBO “Boxing After Dark®” presentation with Ward staging a surprising upset victory in an all-out battle. USA Today praised the fight, saying “the ninth round is one of the greatest action-filled [moments] in history.” The two met again on Nov. 23, 2002 in Atlantic City on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” and Gatti bounced back with a unanimous decision victory. The epic series concluded with another brilliant effort by both fighters on HBO on June 7, 2003 in Atlantic City, with Gatti scoring a unanimous decision victory.

A Montreal native, Gatti (40-9, 31 KOs) fought out of Jersey City, NJ and was one of boxing’s brightest stars during his exciting career. Ward, now 43, long known for his dogged determination and ring workmanship, hails from Lowell, MA and retired as an active fighter after the three showdowns with Gatti. Ward later trained his former opponent in the closing chapter of Gatti’s professional career.

Gatti before Gatti

By: Ted Sares

There’s only one way you can lick [Tony] Zale—you gotta kill him. —Rocky Graziano

The proof is in the pudding when I get in the ring. -- Thompson Carl “The Cat”

I hear the cheers when I need to hear them. It feels good to know my fans are still behind me. --Arturo Gatti

It was a tough fight, but that’s the way I like to win them … I said I was going to introduce new blood to the sport, and I guess you saw a lot of new blood. —Michael Katsidis..

“Mr. Excitement.”

Danny “Little Red” Lopez was “Mr. Excitement.” He was never in a dull fight, and was most dangerous if he had been decked--which was often. Soft-spoken and humble, he was ferocious and unrelenting once the bell rang. In an era in which fights were regularly seen free on non-cable television, he was one of the greatest of the television fighters and his name guaranteed big ratings.

TEAM BENITEZ NEWS LETTER

www.robertobenitezonline.com
Roberto Benitez returns to the Ring.
But he never left Boxing ! ! !

Roberto broke his hand on his last opponent Vineash Rungea, early in a fight that took place in White Plains, New York. That was in October 2006, more than 2 ½ years ago. Benitez went on to win the fight, but the pain in his hand remained until this past Christmas.

Benitez who has been boxing since he was 10 years old has always dreamed he would be Champion of the World. When the hand refused to heal, and the pain didn’t go away, the dream remained.

After more than a year of rehabilitation and therapy, along with visits to Doctors all over the country, Roberto reveled his soul.

He said “Don’t worry God has a plan and it’s going to be alright, because I intend to box till I am 40, my hand will heal by then ! ! !
I'll keep myself in top physical condition so that when it does heal, I’ll be ready.” A great attitude speaks !

Members of Team Benitez have witnessed an athletic feat as Roberto maintained his fitness since the day his hand was broken. This past Christmas as an answer to many prayers Roberto noticed that the pain was gone.

Stevens was the opponent, though you may remember him from Showbox: Andre Dirrell won a UD running from him and Showtime almost dropped Dirrell when he told Jim Gray that fans don't matter: Let them boo, I'm here to win. What to Expect This Saturday Night in Newark

By Les Dowgier

This Saturday night, July 11th, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, we'll see the return of IBF and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Champion, Tomasz “Goral” Adamek 37-1 (25 KOs), as he squares off against “The Celtic Warrior”, Hackensack’s own Bobby Gunn 21-3-1 (18 KOs). Will this be a closely contested fight or a total blow out and easy pay day for the champ?

On paper this fight appears to be a bit of a mismatch (a notion reinforced by the various betting websites which have Adamek as a heavy betting favorite). However, is it possible that this may prove to be a rather intriguing match-up?

From Kathy Duva, Promoter, Main Events

“Bobby Gunn is a lot of fun. We’ve gotten to know him recently during the preparation for this fight. I believe from everything that he told me that he is going to make Saturday night memorable for everybody.”

“I can’t take sole credit for bringing boxing back to Newark. A big part of the reason is the great fighter beside me. Tomasz Adamek came to us over a year ago with my partner in this promotion, Ziggy Rozalski, I am grateful for that. And the reason boxing in Newark is doing as well as it is because of one person. Tomasz Adamek is the reason the fans come out. They come out because every time he steps in the ring it’s exciting, it’s compelling. That crowd that comes to see him make it so exciting. He and the crowd feed off each other somehow. It is just electrifying to be in the room! And we’re all going to be there on Saturday because we want to experience that again.”

AMEN...WHAT has David done to earn a shot at the heavyweight title other then run his mouth ? He was the undisputed cruiserweight champion...So what ? Why hasn't O'Neil Bell got a shot at the title? Wamba is still waiting. Get my drift?

I like Monte Barrett, he was a good heavyweight but on the downside of his career when Haye stopped him. Let Haye put some more notches on his gun. Fight and beat a Holyfield or John Ruiz. I'd even be happy to see him fight David Tua or Oliver McCall.

Arnaoutis came away with a unanimous decision after ten-rounds. One judge had it 98-92, while the other two judges had it at 96-94. The latter two judges had it more accurate as Carrasquillo put up a strong effort in the early rounds while Arnaoutis moved and scored more in the middle and later rounds.

ALEXIS ARGUELLO; "Talk Softly But Carry A Big Stick"

By: Jim Amato

Note;
I wrote this article several years ago. Alexis was one of my all time favorites. I'm shocked and deeply sad at the news of his passing. He was a true gentleman and a credit to the sport. May he rest in peace.

One of the best pure punchers of my generation was Alexis Arguello. He was aptly nicknamed " The Explosive Thin Man ". He was tall and rail thin but his punch could stop an opponent dead in his tracks.

It's hard to believe that Alexis was stopped in the very first round of his pro debut in his native Managua, Nicaragua. He would rally to win three straight then lose again. Hardly the makings of a legend.

Ruiz jumps all over Arreola’s comments

LAS VEGAS (July 1, 2009) – It didn’t take two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) very long to respond to comments made by unbeaten heavyweight contender Chris Arreola and his promoter, Dan Goossen, at a press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Arreola was quoted as saying, “There are a lot of old guys and former champs sitting around there that we need to take care of. Their time is up. They need to go.”

Quotes from Bobby Gunn Workout

Hackensack P.A.L., Hackensack, NJ

Photo: Tom Casino

From Bobby Gunn:

“I took this fight because I wanted to fight the best. Tomasz Adamek is the best. The man is a champion inside and outside the ring. I would have taken this fight for any amount of money they gave me. This is not about financial profit. This is about my chance to show everyone that I can be the best.”

“None of the Top 10 would fight Tomasz Adamek. I call them ‘Nancy Boys or ‘Fancy Pants’, they’re like prima donnas. What’s the sense of being ranked if you don’t want to fight the best in the world? When you are Top 10 you have to fight all the best. I want to fight Adamek, he is the best and I want to beat the best”

How has the training been going? “Are you kidding me? I am going all out for this fight. I am training to the best of my ability and I have the greatest team you can have. I have Kendall Holt’s trainer, “Terrific” Aroz Gist, I’m telling you the best! We have been studying the tapes. With cardio I went through the roof. I’m training really hard, harder than I ever have before. I am in great shape and I am ready.”
