TYSON: Coming Soon on DVD

CULVER CITY, CALIF. – Tyson, a no-holds-barred portrait of the legendary and controversial former heavyweight champion, arrives on Blu-ray High Def and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on August 18. Oscar® nominated writer/director James Toback (Bugsy)[i], who earned a special ‘Regard Knockout Award’ after last year’s Cannes Film Festival screening, directs Tyson, which is entirely narrated by the champ himself. The film tells the story of a young boy who rose from the most impoverished circumstances, soared to unlimited heights, then -- like a character in a classical tragedy -- was destroyed by his own arrogance and hubris.

Tyson’s bonus features include a new featurette “A Day in the Life” with Toback, red carpet premiere footage and commentary. The Sony Pictures Classics film will be available on DVD for $28.96 SRP, while the Blu-ray High-Def version will sell for $39.95 SRP.

It wasn’t exactly what he planned for, but nonetheless Juan Manuel Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs) kept his perfect record intact after a successful albeit tougher than expected title defense against virtual unknown challenger Olivier Lontchi (18-1-2, 8 KOs) on Top Ranks’s Latin Fury 9 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Pound For Pound Results From North Bergen

Aranoutis Wins a Close Unanimous Decision

By: Danny Serratelli

Thursday 25 June 2009
Schuetzen Park, North Bergen, New Jersey, United States
light welterweight Mike Arnaoutis 22 (10) - 3 (1) - 2 W Doel Carrasquillo 12 (10) - 12 (3) - 1 UD 10 10

Aranoutis did enough to win the fight primariliy with ring generalship. Carrasquillo, to his credit, came to knock Mighty Mike out. Doel threw hard punches from the first bell until the end. Mike out worked him, did a better job of using his legs and the ring, and sqeaked out the win in the end.

light heavyweight Bobby Rooney 10 (6) - 2 (0) - 1 W Brian Bernard 8 (4) - 5 (3) - 2 KO 1 8
~ time: 2:40 ~

Rooney always comes to fight and gives the fans their money's worth. They were calling Scheutzen Park "The House McDermott built" but with Danny scratched off the card with an injury, it would be "The House that Rooney built" tonight. Rooney ended matters early with an impressive KO 2:40, 1.

Maidana upsets Ortiz

Tonight looked to be a disappointing HBO B.A.D. show, because of the cancellation of the Rocky Juaraz vs. Chris John, but in the world of boxing, one never knows what is going to happen.

To my surprise, a modern day classic was hatched in the L.A. evening, and the Golden Boy/HBO hyped Victor Ortiz did not leave the ring as the star. Argentinean Marcos Maidana surprised the boxing world, in his U.S. debut, as he rose from the canvas three times to stop the much heralded Ortiz.

By: Jim Amato

It's too bad that the cruiserweight division was not around in the 60's and 70's. Many fine boxers scaled under 190 pounds and gave creditable performances against bigger men. Doug Jones is an example as he came close to upsetting Cassius Clay in 1963. Doug had lost in 1962 to Harold Johnson for the light heavyweight title. In 1965, he lost to Ernie Terrell for WBA Heavyweight crown. Back then there was no middle ground. If you weighed over 175 pounds, you fought heavyweights, period.

Please see what one of the most influential boxing writers said today about 'Don King's Summer Sizzler' coming up at BankAtlantic Center on July 11 in Sunrise, Fla.:

"It's a fight card that should not be overlooked. It has the potential to be the best boxing show of the summer. Tickets are priced at $75, $40, $25 and $10 with a few "golden circle" seats for $200. It's an excellent card, and at those prices it's definitely worth attending if you're in the area. I think this is the sleeper fight of the summer."

Perhaps backing the controversy surrounding the match, Mercer knocked out Sylvia in not just the first round or the first minute, but the first ten seconds.

Tim Sylvia threw one kick then Mercer threw a right that connected and put Sylvia straight to the floor. This fight shows what a real boxer, even an old one can do to an MMA fighter in 4 ounce gloves.

Miguel Cotto Overcomes Adversity

Captures a Split Decision Victory Over Joshua Clottey
By: Danny Serratelli
By: Danny Serratelli, ringside

WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, 33-1, 27 KO’s won a 12- round split decision over Joshua Clottey, 35-2, 21 KO’s at Madison Square Garden tonight. The Doghouseboxing/Brickcityboxing scorecard read 115-112 at the final bell, the same score as Judge John McKaie. Judge Tom Miller scored the bout for Clottey 114-113 and Judge Don Truella scored the bout 116-111 for Miguel Cotto. With many close rounds, and different styles, all of these scores were fair. Miguel Cotto overcame a very bad cut from an accidental head butt in round number 3 and showed the ring generalship and tenacity necessary to win this fight. Clottey had to overcome the whole arena backing Cotto up, and he did a good job. However, Clottey is a respected adversary, not only by his opponents, but also by the fans. He did not receive cheers, but he also did not get booed.

MARVIS FRAZIER; THE LOST SON...

“Flesh of my flesh. Blood of my blood.”
By: Jim Amato

The camera rolls and the highlight clip begins. It shows a young, undefeated but green Marvis Frazier dancing while taunting heavyweight champion Larry Holmes. In the blink of an eye Holmes unloads a right hand sucker shot that sends Marvis backward and into a sprawled position on the canvas. Marvis showing he is a true Frazier gamely arises. Quickly Holmes pins him in a corner and pummels him unmercifully till the ref intervenes. The look on Frazier’s face isn’t so much a look of pain. It is a bewildered, shellshocked look like Ken Norton had after Gerry Cooney had worked him over in a corner. A look that said “What the hell hit me?”

Miguel Cotto vs Joshua Clottey Boxing Preview and Betting Odds

By: Brad Marchetti, Doghouse Boxing

The betting line for the Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey fight have the Puerto Rican icon Cotto sporting a hefty -350 price tag. The African Joshua Clottey is getting little respect from the bookmakers at +250 odds despite most recently handing Zab Judah a swift beating last August. Clottey, 35-2, 20 KO’s, has been waiting for this opportunity his whole life and he is unlikely to be intimidated by the shaven skulled, testosterone fueled, Puerto Rican. Cotto, 33-1, 27 KO’s, also fought the above mentioned Zab Judah and was a much tougher battle than Clottey was. Is the Judah fight an indicator of things to come for the Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey fight this Saturday at Madison Square Garden? The Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey line gives Miguel Cotto a 78% chance of winning.

A New Life at 140

Interview with Nate Campbell
By: Rob Tierney

The word on the street is that Nate Campbell will never see 135 lbs again. Still, if you ask the former Champion himself, he'll tell you that it really doesn't matter. The superstars of the Lightweight division have graduated from 135 lbs and are moving on. The Galaxxy Warrior is going with them.

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez were the superstars of the Lightweight division. However, that was yesterday. Today, they are taking turns swapping fists with the biggest money makers in the game. However, there is one man that cannot be counted out of the picture.

Nate Campbell is poised, anxious and ready for a big payday. Furthermore, he is feeling stronger, healthier and more comfortable than ever as he looks to open the next chapter in his career at 140. I caught up with Nate on Wednesday to hear more about his plans for the future.

RT: Nate, how has life been treating you since the Ali Funeka fight?

NC: It's been what it's been. Unfortunately, I have been dealing with a few things outside of the ring that has limited my celebration victory.

RT: Are you still in the gym? Are you still working?

NC: I'm keeping up with my roadwork. I'm doing what I need to do.

RT: It appeared to me after the Funeka fight that you were pretty excited about moving up to 140.

NC: Oh Yeah! Let me tell you something. I am going to be a big 140 pounder. I will be stronger than ever. I will no longer have to kill myself in order to make the weight.

“HOUSTON, IT’S LIFT OFF!” FOR MALIGNAGGI/DIAZ

DiBella Entertainment and Golden Boy wrapped up negotiations today and tied up all loose ends for the fight- including the agreed upon weight of 138.5 lbs.

“I told Paulie to lay off his Grandma’s pasta and eat one less cannoli,” said Lou DiBella about Malignaggi dropping an extra pound or two. “Paulie is confident of his speed and boxing ability and is prepared to win in the lion’s den of Houston.”

“This is a fight between two guys looking to prove something. We are both coming of losses in big fights and we are both coming in hungry. Expect fireworks,” said Malignaggi.

Jackie Tonawanda - Female Ali

On June 9, 2009, Jackie Tonawanda Garrett, born September 4, 1933, fought her final battle. She had fearlessly battled this adversary for over a year until its end.

Looking over her career we see a courageous Pioneer of Women’s boxing who legally fought the New York State Boxing commission in 1978 for women's right to professionally box. This paved the way for names such as Jackie Frazier, Laila Ali and Christy Martin among others. Her pro matches of the early 70’s, although not sanctioned because they were conducted in the underground circuit, where she demonstrated her prowess, strength and talent. She was trained by the likes of Freddy Brown, Charley Golman and Rollie Hackmer. She ventured into Muhammad Ali's camp where she got the opportunity to step into the ring to spar with him.

By: Moses Vered

Once beaten Pawel Wolak overwhelmed former “Contender Season 2” participent Vinroy Barrett (22-8, 11 KOs) over 10-one sided rounds last night at the Capital One Theatre in Long Island, NY. Over the last two years, Wolak (24-1, 16 KOs) has been on a steady diet of former “Contender” alums. Johnatan Reid, Norberto Bravo and last night Vinory Barrett have all been dealt an” L” on their records when they meet the “Raging Bull” in the squared circle. The only loss on Wolak record coincidentally came at the hands of, much avoided, former “Contender Season 1” star Ishe Smith, in a competitive 10 round decision loss last August.

ESPN2 Friday Night Fights: Perez vs Molina Boxing Betting Odds

By: Brad Marchetti, Doghouse Boxing

ESPN2 Friday Night Fights returns to Miami when Jr. middleweights Danny Perez vs. Carlos Molina meet in a 12-round bout for a minor title belt. Molina, 16-4-1, 5 KO’s, is coming off the most impressive win of his career when he outworked hard-punching prospect Ed Paredes over 10-rounds in Tacoma, Washington. The betting line has the late-sub Molina who is on an 8-fight winning streak as the slight +120 underdog against Danny Perez who was originally to face Carlos Quintana. Danny Perez, 34-5, 17 KO’s, is a rugged California warrior that has been in with the best that the West Coast has to offer including two fights with Antonio Margarito. Both of those fights came early in both brawlers careers but it should be noted that Perez dropped the iron jawed Margarito with a right hand in their first encounter. The boxing betting odds for the Danny Perez vs. Carlos Molina fight have Perez as a slight 7-5 favorite.

THE BOXERDRILLZ BITE

By: Ricky Ray Taylor
As posted on www.BraggingRightsCorner.com

Evidently, SHOWTIME, TELEFUTURA & FOXSPORTS are taking the month of JUNE off from LIVE boxing.

Although at first glance it seems like JUNE isn't carrying its weight in the square circle - there ARE a few fighters/matchups we may want to consider viewing:

CARLOS MOLINA is a late replacement in tonights bout with DANNY PEREZ. Molina is filling in for CARLOS QUINTANA. If Perez' handlers think they've gotten themselves a tomato-can in Molina, they'd better think twice. Molina is on an 8 fight WIN streak. Last February he took his fists on the road traveling to NYC and squared up as an underdog to 17-1 Alexis Camacho. Molina won BIG on all cards in an easy UD. All 4 of Molinas losses were to undefeated fighters - one of which was JULIO CHAVEZ, JR in '06 when he dropped a MD.
The fight with durable 34-5 fighter Danny Perez should be fun to watch.

“I am committed to fighting for the WBA title again because I am the mandatory challenger,” Ruiz explained. “I was robbed twice and I want to knockout ‘The Giant’ this time and take the fight out of the hands of the judges. If the WBA doesn’t stand by its rules and mandate a fight between me and Valuev, I am fully prepared to fight Klitschko, even on short notice.”

Tickets go on sale today and are available on www.ticketmaster.com . Adamek who appears to be in great shape, vows not to lose his belt stating that “Gunn will know how good Adamek is”. Gunn with the “nothing to lose but everything to gain” mentality thinks Adamek is in for a big surprise that night.

With a strong Polish contingent expected to attend, I don’t see Adamek disappointing his fans and will walk away once again as champion.

"IRISH" FRANKIE CRAWFORD

By: Jim Amato

He was a world class featherweight in the late 1960's and early 70's. He twice fought for a piece of the world title. He was from my hometown of Cleveland. His name was Frankie Crawford.

Frankie grew up in the East 65th, St.Clair area of Cleveland. Tough area then. Tough area now. Crawford grew up learning to defend himself. He learned well. He won the 1965 Cleveland Golden Gloves. He was told for a small boxer to make money, he needed to go to California. Frankie heeded that advice. He turned pro in LA in 1965. He became an immediate crowd pleaser and draw for West Coast promoters.

MOSLEY ANSWERS HIS CRITICS: "SAYS HE WILL “RETIRE HIM (MAYWEATHER)”

By: John Martinez
Iron Boxing
In the district that spans from 140 to 154 pounds, some of the sweet science’s most gifted warriors reside and thrive.

From junior welterweight to super welterweight, this region of weight classes is stacked with fighters that are willing to give the public what they want and deserve- a fight.

Names like, but not limited to, Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquaio, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Joshua Clottey, whom I believe will give fits to the PR bomber but ultimately lose by split decision, Paul Williams, Timothy Bradley Jr., Ricky Hatton, Andre Berto, the once mighty Antonio Margarito, and the new addition of lightweight champion, Juan Manuel Marquez can be found here.

Among those names, but not receiving a lot of attention from boxing scribes, fighters, and fans alike, stands first ballot Hall of Famer- “Sugar” Shane Mosley.

Mosley’s name isn’t exactly rolling off the tongues of Mayweather, Cotto, or Pacquaio either. In fact, none of the top three combatants mentioned seems very enthused to enter the squared circle with the WBA welterweight king, Shane Mosley, anytime soon.

To say that this has irked the welterweight champ is putting it mildly, especially when it comes to Mayweather.

“Why is he (Mayweather) fighting the lightweight champion of the world (Juan Marquez)? He should be fighting the welterweight champion, that’s me,” he told ESPN’s Brian Kenney.

But when I spoke with Shane Mosley as recently as yesterday, he informed me that Mayweather was not his first choice to pick a fight with.

In fact, he said “I want to fight Pacquaio first then Mayweather.” This way, it “kills the fight for Mayweather to fight Pacquaio (and) then be able to retire without fighting me.”

“I want to retire him (Mayweather),” he said.
