Pound-4-Pound Show: Schuetzen Park, NJ
“Around The Ring”

Photo: Chris Brooks, Pound-4-Pound Promotions held another successful card Thursday May 7th at Schuetzen Park in N. Bergen, NJ. In total six bouts were contested. All but one of the Pound-4-Pound promoted boxers won by stoppages. Schuetzen Park located at 3167 Kennedy Blvd. in North Bergen, NJ (right outside Jersey City and very close to the Lincoln Tunnel side of the Hudson) is home base for Pound-4-Pound Promotions. They run a great show with great local up and coming talent. If you want a great night of professional boxing without the hassle of a big arena like the large shows, this is the place. If you get there early enough there is even free parking.
Jeremy Bryan (Paterson, NJ) improved to 10-0, 4 KO’s with an unanimous decision over a very crafty and game Edwin Algarin (Guabo, PR) in a scheduled six round Junior Welterweight bout. Bryan, a former amateur standout (former multiple NJ and two-time National Golden Gloves champion) looked primed with sharp combinations and a fierce body attack. Take nothing away from Algarin, who took everything Bryan could dish out and kept coming. Algarin, a southpaw with a bit of an awkward style was a good test for Bryan. He’s been in the ring and went the distance with Ben Tackie, who’s fought everybody, and tough Cuban Damian Frias who now is 15-1, 8 KO’s. Look for Bryan to continue to improve in talent and competition level.
Hometown lightweight hero Danny McDermott (N. Bergen, NJ) won impressively with a KO at 1:42 of round 2 over Italian-born now Brooklyn, NY resident Floriano Pagliara. McDermott dropped Pagliara twice in the second round, the first via a combination with a right hand, the second coming by combination right hand to the body ending with a left hook to the head. This writer was very impressed with McDermott who with a record now of 8-3-1, and only 3 KO’s was up against Pagliara who was 9-2, with 6 KO’s. Pagliara didn’t get a chance to impose his power on “Little Mac” who followed his corner’s advice to the tee catching Pagliara who kept dropping his right hand and paid dearly for it.
In other action: Jose Rivera (New Rochelle, NY) won his pro debut over Gustavo Naranjo (Brooklyn, NY) in a four round bantamweight bout. Rivera just finished as runner-up in the 2009 NY Daily News Golden Gloves and is on his way as a professional. Chris Green (Asbury Park, NJ) stopped Henry Shark (E. Orange, NJ) at 1:38 of round one in a four round lightweight matchup. Chris Murphy (Sparta, NJ) had a short night as well with a first round knockout (1:12) of James Walker (Kokomo, Indiana). Murphy improves to 2-0, 2 KO’s. Former 2008 National Golden Gloves Champ Denis Doughlin (Morganville, NJ) made a short night of Gilbert Johnson (Wilmington, NC) with a TKO at 2:28 in round one of a four round middleweight bout.
All the Pound-4-Pound fighters were in the crowd cheering on their stable mates. Glen Tapia (Passaic, NJ), 2-0, 2 KO’s junior-middleweight who just won his second pro bout in Las Vegas last week. Cruiserweight Patrick Farrell (Jersey City, NJ) who just won his second pro bout at the Prudential Center John Duddy undercard in Newark, NJ April 24th. New Brunswick, NJ super-bantamweight Jorge Diaz (8-0, 5 KO’s) who is supposed to be on the June undercard of the Miguel Cotto fight at MSG. Light heavyweight Jason Escalera (Union City, NJ) who is 5-0, 5 KO’s. And promising lightweight (who is not with Pound-4-Pound I should qualify) Mike Perez (Newark, NJ) who was also an outstanding amateur boxer, winning last year’s National Golden Gloves. Perez is now 2-0-1, 2 KO’s. Keep an eye on all these fine young men and boxers. Former IBF Lt.-Welterweight Champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi was in the crowd as well. Come out to Schuetzen Park for the next Pound-4-Pound show (TBA). You will not be disappointed in the matchmaking, talent, and quality of great pro boxing with local talent on their way to the bigger venues and shows like MSG, HBO and Pay-Per-View. See you “around the ring”. BB
