Andre Berto and Kermit Cintron shine in Hollywood
By: Brandon Estrict, www.DoghouseBoxing.com
Live from Hollywood, Florida, HBO’s Boxing After Dark telecast produced 24 reasonably entertaining rounds of action, with the network’s chosen heir, Andre Berto, and the up and down, until tonight that is, Kermit Cintron taking big steps forward in their respective careers’.
With minimal objection, tonight’s biggest winner was Kermit “The Killer” Cintron, rebounding from two bruising(and possibly tainted) losses to exiled Antonio Margarito, and a Draw in his last bout on HBO, a Junior Middlweight title challenge against Champion, Sergio Martinez, to hand HBO’s top 154 lb. prospect, Alfredo Angulo, the very first loss of his young pro career via clear unanimous decision. The bout was a title eliminator, for the right to become the mandatory to the aforementioned Martinez, and a Cintron victory greases the skids for a rematch of their very controversial draw just a few months back.

Cummings Drops Davis; Stevenson Remains Unbeaten in Baltimore
Baltimore, MD – Baltimore native Cory “Black Ice” Cummings upped his record to 17-4 (13 KO’s) with an emphatic 9th round stoppage of Washington DC’s Demetrius Davis 19-15-5 (7 KO’s) in the main event Friday night at the Du Burns Arena.
The opening round was a rough one for Cummings, who had to deal with a gash over his right eye following a clash of heads less than a minute in. With his opponent at a disadvantage, the slick Davis outboxed Cummings while frequently switching between orthodox and southpaw stances. Cummings was cut once again following a clash in the eighth, this time over the left eye. With a sense of urgency and behind on the cards, Cummings had a strong surge in the final minute of the eighth round.
Colombian puncher Yonnhy Perez kept his record intact by knocking out former #3 IBF contender Silence Mabuza in front of his adoring South African fan base.
Johannesburg, South Africa (May 29, 2009) - Behind on all scorecards at the beginning of the 12th round, Perez landed a huge left hand jab that sent Mabuza to the canvas. Buzzed and on uneasy legs Mabuza beat the count. Perez proceeded to apply pressure and landed huge shots leaving no option for referee Kenny Chevalier to stop the fight with 1:06 left in the last stanza.

Team Ruiz demanding purse bid for Valuev-Ruiz III
LAS VEGAS (May 29, 2009) – Upon today’s announcement that Valuev-Chagaev II has been canceled, Team Ruiz is demanding an immediate purse bid in order for Valuev-Ruiz III to be held by August 30 for the World Boxing Association heavyweight title.
Two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) lost to Valuev last August 30th in Berlin by 12-round split decision. Team Ruiz petitioned the WBA for a variety of reasons regarding the conduct of the fight and in response to the appeal, the WBA declared Ruiz as its mandatory challenger for the winner of the Valuev-Chagaev title fight scheduled for this weekend in Finland.

MANCINI VS ARROYO
By: Jim Amato
Author's Note;
Since this article was first published in th June 1997 issue of BOXING WORLD magazine, Harry and Ray have put any animosity behind them.
"Why We Missed The Battle Of Youngstown"
Let us make believe that it is 1984 again and the management of Ray Mancini decided NOT to defend his W.B.A. lightweight title against Livingstone Bramble. Instead they opt to unify at least part of the championship against cross town rival Harry Arroyo, the I.B.F. title holder. The bout would be held in their home town of Youngstown, Ohio and be televised live nationally. The whole city of Youngstown and its surrounding areas are buzzing with excitement and anticipation. The TV executives predict a bonanza rating since both boxers are proven crowd pleasers. In the days preceding the FIGHT, there is electricity in the air. The city is divided in its loyalty. Mancini seems to be the fan's favorite, but Arroyo has a faithful contingent too.

Gunn Signs to Fight Adamek; Amped For a Career Defining Opportunity

When Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn initially challenged Tomasz Adamek in 2007, he had a clear motive. While many fighters call out the best simply for publicity, Gunn’s had something else in mind: a good old-fashioned slug out.
“Styles make fights, said Gunn, who holds the WBA-NABA and WBC-USNBC Cruiserweight titles. “Gunn vs Adamek will be the Adamek-Briggs of the Cruiserweight division. Fans want to see good fights and all I know how to do is entertain.”
Since the day he made waves by calling out Adamek, Gunn was dreaming of a showdown with the gutsy Pole. Although logistics prevented a December 2007 fight, Gunn still had hope. Last week, when fellow contender Matt Godfrey decided against taking on Adamek, his promoter Main Events contacted Gunn.

Squeezed Out: Shaun George still getting shunned at 175

Interview by: Rob Tierney
He finally made it or so it seemed. On May 16th in Las Vegas last year, Shaun George dropped former Heavyweight Champion Chris Byrd in the ninth round of a non title fight enroute to winning a stunning technical knockout. Substantial offers were bound to start falling on the table. Still, one year after defeating Chris Byrd in front of a televised audience on ESPN, the Light Heavyweight division continues to shun Shaun George. I caught up with the Brooklyn native on Memorial Day to hear his thoughts on why he is struggling to gain recognition and respect in his division. Here is what he had to say.
RT: Good Afternoon Shaun, what have you been up to these days?
SG: Not too much! I'm just working out, keeping in shape and taking care of my newborn son and family.
RT: Did you catch the Dawson vs Tarver fight a few weeks ago?
SG: Yes I Did
RT: What did you think of the fight?
SG: I thought it was a good fight. Antonio Tarver fought hard but came up short. However, I must say that I was not impressed with some of the things I was hearing from the commentators.
RT: What do you mean?
SG: I really didn't like how the commentators were cutting down the sport and as well as my division by claiming that there is no competition at Light Heavyweight when I am out here canvassing for a fight. They keep talking about Chad Dawson and how talented he is and how there is no one at his level in the division. Yet, there is a lot of talent in the division. Look at me!

LOS ANGELES, MAY 21 - For years, Juan Manuel Marquez toiled in the shadow of fellow countrymen Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, even though boxing aficionados knew just how good the Mexico City native was. A world featherweight title still didn't allow Marquez to break through, but beginning in 2007, "Dinamita" finally got his chance to shine on the world stage, and in the last two years, he has proven to be the best of Mexico's revered trinity.

***ALLAN GREEN CALLS OUT CHAD DAWSON!!***
New York (May 19, 2009) – After learning of IBF and IBO light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson's interest in moving down to 168 pounds, Allan Green's mouth began to water. Now that Dawson has taken care of business by winning a second unanimous decision over Antonio Tarver, Allan Green has his napkin on his lap, eating utensils in hand, and is ready for supper.
“If he's coming down to 168, let’s make this happen. I respect Chad's skills as one of the best in the game, but I'm feeling so focused right now that I don't see anybody, including Chad Dawson, doing much more than six rounds with me,” said Green.
FIREWORKS GUARANTEED BERTO VS URANGO and CINTRON VS ANGULO HEADLINE HBO BOXING AFTER DARK ON MAY 30th
HOLLYWOOD, FL, May 18 – Hype and brash talk have become a part of most boxing promotions in recent years, but for May 30th’s HBO Boxing After Dark doubleheader at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida, none of that is necessary when Andre Berto defends his welterweight title against junior welterweight champion Juan Urango, and junior middleweight knockout artists Alfredo Angulo and Kermit Cintron meet in the center of the ring.
Simply put, this is a can’t miss event in terms of high stakes, power punching, and excitement.

Ashanti Jordan Back in Action May 21, 2009
Sacramento California (May 18, 2009) - Golden Boy Promotions hard-hitting undefeated heavyweight prospect, Ashanti "The Boss" Jordan (8-0, 7 KO's), returns to the ring Thursday May 21, 2009 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento when he faces journeyman David Johnson in a scheduled six round bout.
On Sunday, May 16th, 2009, Welterweight Caribbean WBC Champion, Alex "The Brick City Bullet" Perez was awarded the "Outstanding Citizens Award" for his commitment to the City of Newark

Newark, New Jersey's Council Vice President Luis Quintana presented Alex with the award in front of a packed house at Quintana's 15th Annual Breakfast at the Robert Treat Hotel. Special guests included Governor Jon Corzine as well as Newark Council members Anibal Ramos (North Ward), Carlos Gonzalez (at large) and State Senator Ron Rice among others.
Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez, 10-0, 6 KO’s captured the WBC’s Caribbean Federation Welterweight title on March 14th. He came off of a 15 month layoff before that fight, not by any fault of his own, but because every time he was scheduled to fight there were problems with opponents falling out and promoters not making sure there was an opponent for him to fight come fight night. Perez was in the gym training for fights that weren’t to be the entire 15 months, and the time has made him more and more eager to fight as often as possible.
Manager, Jose Rosario, legal advisor Daniel Serratelli and the rest of "Team Perez" plan to keep him busy the rest of the way in 09, because Perez is a hungry fighter. Alex has been at it 100% for a long time. He was 53-3 as an amateur where he was a 3 time Golden Gloves Champion and a 3 time Diamond Gloves Champ. He also captured the State Championship once before turning pro in late 2004.

Ward shines on Showtime outclassing Miranda
By: Benny Henderson Jr., DoghouseBoxing
Unbeaten super middleweight contender Andre Ward 19-0 (12) shined on Showtime ShoBox this past Saturday night as he outclassed the hard hitting Edison Miranda 32-4 (28) for twelve rounds silencing the critics on where he stands amongst the top of the crop of the 168-pound division.
Although unblemished thus far in his pro career, in the eyes of many Ward came into the bout against Miranda untested and unproven, but the twenty-five year old demonstrated that he had studied hard for the test and showcased his greater talents to his ringside fight fans at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA.

AARON " SUPERMAN " DAVIS
By: Jim Amato
He may be one of the most overlooked champions of the 1990's. He had style and skill. He won 49 of 55 bouts and a piece of the welterweight title. He knocked out 31 but he himself was never stopped. His name was Aaron Davis and they called him "Superman".
Davis was born in the Bronx in 1967 and turned professional in 1986. He reeled off 29 straight victories to establish himself as a top contender for the welterweight title. Along the way he beat the likes of Horace Shufford, Luis Santana, Gene Hatcher and Curtis Summit. Finally on July 8, 1990 he challenged Mark Breland for the WBA welterweight title. It was a give and take contest but Aaron stood up to Breland's power. Finally in round nine it was Breland that crashed to the canvas. It was a brutal knockout and "Superman" was now a champion.

Chad Dawson vs Antonio Tarver II Boxing Betting Odds
By: Brad Marchetti, www.DoghouseBoxing.com
After opening as a 5-2 favorite in the first Chad Dawson vs. Antonio Tarver bout the rematch has the young stud Dawson pegged as a 5-1 favorite this Saturday on HBO. Big-time fighters move where the $$$ is which is why Chad Dawson vs. Antonio Tarver II has been made with the shallow pool of marquee names for Dawson in the Light-Heavyweight division. The first bout saw Dawson overwhelm the now 40-year old Tarver with his speed and abundance of boxing skill. Does Tarver have one last great fight in him or has the “Magic Man” run out of tricks? The boxing betting moneyline for the Chad Dawson vs Antonio Tarver II bout has Dawson carrying a weighty -600 price tag.
McDERMOTT DISMANTLES PAGLIARA IN 2ND!
Italian Crumbles in “Battle of Prospects”
By: Declan Hughes
Photos By: Robert Delacruz

Last night’s boxing match between two of boxings budding lightweight prospects, Danny McDermott and Floriano Pagliara, had it all in the 4 minutes and 26 seconds that it lasted for. From the start it had suspense, drama and action and the end came with a bang! With a crushing right hand, hometown Hudson County hero, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, from Jersey City, NJ, now 8-1 (3kos), made a dramatic statement to the lightweight division that he is to be taken seriously.

In many ways, this was a break through match up for both fighters, with McDermott coming out the victor. Floriano Pagliara, now 9-3 (6kos), who was the number 6 lightweight in Italy, was looking at this fight to be his coming out party in the USA. But it wasn’t meant to be.

McDERMOTT FOE: THIS ITALIAN IS NO TOMATO CAN

By: Declan Hughes
Floriano Pagliara looks like he should be preparing for a photo shoot in Paris, not preparing to step into a boxing ring to challenge Danny “Little Mac” McDermott in North Bergen tomorrow night.
If Pagliara is concerned about McDermott re-arranging his features over 6 rounds, it didn't show at the weigh in at Shuetzen Park ball room hall tonight. He doesn’t think of himself as model or a movie star, but a straight-ahead brawler who wants to change everyone's impression of him as a European soft touch. McDermott-Pagliara is the main event of the Pound for Pound promoted “May-Hem” show.

Open letter from John Ruiz to the Top American Heavyweights
Brick City's Danny Serratelli and John Ruiz back in 2002I’ve been told I’m not the most fan-friendly fighter in the world, my style often criticized as being ugly, but I’m proud to say I’ve never ducked a worthy opponent. For the past month or two, though, I’ve read and heard a lot BS about how I shouldn’t be the WBA mandatory title challenger. A few totally unproven, so-called contenders have whined about them deserving a world title shot more than I do.
Why? Who have Chris Arreola, Eddie Chambers, Kevin Johnson or Brian Minto beaten to deserve a world title shot? Nobody! Just compare my list of victories to yours. You guys haven’t come close to doing what I’ve accomplished.

Pacquiao Catches Hatton in a “Roach Trap!”
By: Coach “K”
May 2nd, MGM, Las Vegas Nevada: In the game of Pacman the way you kill the ghosts is you allow them to get close then you jump them, eating them and get stronger. That’s exactly what Manny Pacquaio (148lbs) did when the “East met the West” catching and dropping the bigger Ricky Hatton (152lbs) twice in the first round, then again closing the second round finishing the “Hitman” 45-2, 32Ko’s winning the IBO light welterweight championship and securing his title as the best pound for pound fighter today.

Hatton Crushed by Pacquiao
By: Christopher Roche

In what continues to be one of the oddest sports weekends of the year, the much hyped Ricky Hatton vs. Manny Pacquiao superfight turned into a massive blowout.
Pacquiao blasted Hatton twice in the first, and he ended the fight with a devastating left hand at the end of round two. On a weekend where a 50-1 shot won the Kentucky Derby, Manny Pacquiao destroys Ricky Hatton.
With such a sad undercard in this fight, I can truly say that I just flushed $49.95 down the perverbial drain.
MAYWEATHER VS. MARQUEZ PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
FLOYD MAYWEATHER
On his comeback:
"Credentials don't lie and my record speaks for itself. I was in the sport 11 years and I was a champion for 10 years. I left on top, and I am coming back on top. I am ready to reclaim what's mine.
"I am the king and no one has taken my crown.
"I am back because the sport of boxing needs me and the fans want me to. Everywhere I go, they go crazy.
"Some day someone might shut my mouth, but right now I am going to talk. I am the top dog and I am back in the spotlight.
"I am Pay-Per-View king. Oscar has some great numbers. But since I won that fight, so I get to count those.
"People keep asking me, who do you think is going to win tonight? Pacquiao or Hatton? Tonight any man can win. It's a gamble. If you want some 'for sure money,' just put it under your mattress until July 18th and bet on Money Mayweather.

Hatton & Pacquiao Take the Stage on Fight of the Year Weekend
Did Abregu vs. Garcia upstage the blockbuster?
By: Christopher Roche
Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao take to the ring tonight in the aftermath of what could very well be the fight of the year. Last night’s Carlos Abregu vs. Irving Garcia Showbox main event was an absolute barnburner. I hope that that bout will serve as a harbinger of great things to come tonight.
Tonight’s Hatton vs. Pacquiao bout also takes place on a weekend where many odd storylines are shaping the news. For example, today’s Kentucky Derby favorite, “I Want Revenge”, was a late scratch from the field. On top of that, the New York Yankees actually showed some heart last night and hit the ball with runners in scoring position, on their way to overcoming a five run deficit to defeat the Angels.
In addition to those two stories, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., will likely announce his intention to return to the ring against Juan Manuel Marquez in July. Finally, the fact that the fight of the year may have taken place last night, adds to the circus-like weekend in sports.
Brick City Picks: Pacquiao vs. Hatton
Alex "The Brick City Bullet" Perez, undefeated welterweight:
I'm running with Pac Man becasue he's fast and he has lots and lots of angles. He has a lot of power and he's a southpaw, like me. Besides, Ricky only knows one way and thats coming forward and that is what Pac Man Loves!
Bobby Bok:
Pac-Man wins easily. Hatton is all hype no action.
Michael "The Artist" Perez, Undefeated Super featherweight:
I feel as though Hatton will come in doing his usual trying to rough up Pac Man and is going to get caught doing so. I give it 7 rounds or less.
Johnny Dillon:
I think Manny Pacqiao will outbox Ricky bad over 12 rounds. Ricky will keep coming, but will grow tired of eating shots on his way in. I see it Manny taking it roughly 8-4 or 9-3 on the cards.
Alex Kut, KEA Boxing:
I really like Manny Pacquiao in this fight. Ricky Hatton is a great fighter no doubt, but Manny Pacquiao is stronger than most people think and he is the more skilled and talented fighter. All you have to do is look at what he did to Oscar De La Hoya.

BEDFORD SAYS HATTON/PACQUIAO CLASH ENDS WITH "FIGHT'S LAST ROUND...JUST LIKE THE FIRST"
By: john Martinez

Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton Boxing Betting Odds
By: Brad Marchetti, Doghouse Boxing
The superfight of 2009 is about to be about to jump off this Saturday when Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton trade leather for the 140 Lb. Ring Championship. Hatton, 45-1, 32 KO's, is undefeated at Jr. welterweight and will be defending his crown against the #1 pound-4-pound fighter active in Manny Pacquiao, 48-3-2, 36 KO's. The fight behind the fight will be among the trainers of the two combatants. Freddie Roach is the longtime trainer of Pacquiao while Floyd Mayweather Sr. will be working with Hatton for just the second time. Both of these trainers are considered some of the best in boxing, and the victor will have plenty of bragging rights and respect in their field. The fight odds are stacked against Hatton with Pacquiao listed as a -295 moneyline favorite.
Manny Pacquiao- 2009 TIME 100

By: Lennox Lewis
Pound for pound, Manny Pacquiao is the best boxer in the world. But even more important than holding that distinction, Manny has connected with the people of his home country, the Philippines, to the point where he's almost like a god. The people have rallied behind him and feel like they're a part of him, because they can see his talent, his dedication, his grace and his class. The grip he holds over the Philippines is similar to Nelson Mandela's influence in South Africa. I can surely see Manny becoming the Philippine President one day.
In fact, he already ran for Congress in the Philippines but lost, in part because voters thought he could do more for the country as an inspirational champion boxer. I agree with the Filipino people. Manny, 30, already has a true global reach, and his influence will only expand as he gets better. Manny is from the Muhammad Ali school. He's a boxer, a puncher and a mover - a champion in four weight divisions. He doesn't stand there and take shots. He throws that wicked jab and is so quick to dodge trouble.
