ESPN Friday Night Fights: Glen Johnson vs Daniel Judah
By: Brad Marchetti
Despite handing out beat downs to Roy Jones Jr., Antonio Tarver and most recently Chad Dawson, Glen Johnson is still searching for another big money payday. This Friday Johnson, 48-12-2, 33 KO’s, will be featured in a low-profile ESPN Friday Night Fights rematch against Daniel Judah, 23-3-3, 10 KO’s, at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL. The four above Johnson victims all trumped the workmanlike “Road Warrior” in flash but lacked the substance to defeat the 40-year old Jamaican. The boxing betting odds for the Glen Johnson vs Daniel Judah fight have Johnson as a 6-1 favorite.
At a well-preserved 5’11” 175 lbs., the shaven skulled bull applies pressure equivalent to a trash compactor. Although largely perceived as an offensive fighter, it’s Johnson’s well-crafted defense that keeps him among the elite. Glen makes terrific use of his hands, arms, shoulders and elbows to deflect incoming blows, frustrating his opponents immensely. A dedicated professional, Johnson can be found at Normandy Gym in Miami training 6 days per week. I was able to speak with some of Johnson’s sparring partners that worked with Johnson in training camp, and they had this to say: “It is almost like Glen has his own special type of heart,” said 2008 178LB. National amateur champion Azea Augustama in reference to Johnson’s endurance. “Glen has an incredible work-rate. Like nothing I have ever seen,” remarked 201Lb. Florida state amateur champion Emmanuel Augustama. While Azea Augustama, 25, and Emmanuel Augustama, 28, have yet to turn pro, they are world-class Olympic athletes that push the aging warrior in their sparring sessions at Normandy Gym. The boxing betting odds OVER\UNDER for the Glen Johnson vs Daniel Judah fight is at 9.5 rounds with the OVER at -295.
Johnson has faced his share of murderous punchers while having barely sniffed the canvas. Even young killers like Emmanuel Augustama and Azea Augustama find it difficult to wobble the iron-chinned Johnson. Glen’s in-fighting skills are rivaled by few in boxing with his uppercuts, hooks, and rights to the midsection wrecking havoc. When in boxer mode, Johnson delivers a chopping, jackhammer jab that sets the table for his high-powered combination's. Despite being regarded as more of a grinder than a KO artist, Johnson can turn out a man’s lights with one shot. The Jamaican’s overhand right that crashed into Roy Jones Jr.’s temple is one of the hardest punches that one will ever see. Johnson has been pursuing Roy Jones Jr. for years now but will likely find himself the odd man out if Jones continues fighting. Johnson is simply too good and too low-key for any of the big-money guys to risk fighting. Hopefully Johnson, one of boxing’s good guys will catch a break and land another payday before landing in Canastota when he retires. The boxing betting odds for the Glen Johnson vs Daniel Judah fight have Johnson as a -800 favorite on the money line.
