Antonio Margarito vs. Shane Mosley
A Top Elite Fighter Is Crowned at his Peak Prime of 37?
By: Danny Smith
Upsets have been so common to me this past two years as well as the ageing fighters come rising to the top once again. As another story as the one with "De La Hoya vs. Paquiao", and "Pavlick vs. Hopkins", Mosley once again proved himself and to the boxing world that his at the top his game at 37 years of age.
The underdog went up against the WBA champion "Antonio Margarito" last Saturday night at the Staple Center, and as I point out that "styles make fights" this was just the case in this fight as Mosley's skills and experience showed off that night and came into the fight prepared and focus with his game plan he has talked about through the buildup of the fight. Remember when Vernon Forrest beat Shane twice and Forrest lost against Mayorga twice and yet Shane was able to beat Mayorga? Well that's because each fighter had their difference styles and in this night it was no exception for Mosley as he dominated the "Tijuana Tornado" for 9 straight rounds to earn a TKO victory. As for Margarito he just wasn't able to figure out Shane and fell right into his game plan coming forward all the time making him a clear and punchable target so therefore Shane was able to hit, clinch, and flee for the whole fight overwhelming Margarito with hard punches and combinations.
The unsteady legs of Margarito gave in as he went down on the 8th round after receiving an accumulative amount of vicious shots but yet he was able to beat the count and saved by the bell. Coming in to the 9th round Shanes killer instinct was in effect, he knew his man was on unsteady legs and continued putting pressure on him when finally putting him down for the second time when Margaritos corner had seen enough and threw in the towel. The Fight puts Mosley at the top of the welterweight division once again as he know is crowned the WBA champion. I'd expect to see him again in a fight with the winner of Hatton vs. Paquiao. Now as for Margarito he should be given another chance for a rematch with either Mosley or Cotto because everyone has their bad days.
