Adamek-Banks The Numbers Tell the Story
.
When boxing returns to Newark’s Prudential Center on Friday, February 27th fans will be treated to an entire night of competitive bouts.
Starting with the main event, where unbeaten Johnathon Banks of Detroit (20-0, 14 KO’s) challenges reigning IBF World Cruiserweight Champion Tomasz Adamek of Jersey City (36-1, 24 KO’s) a total of eight undefeated fighters will test their skills and risk their unblemished records on the scheduled eight-bout card.
Even more amazing is the fact that when added together, the total won/lost records of the night’s competitors amount to 121-14, 77 KO’s vs. 115-19, 73 KO’s. In a pair of six-rounders, four unbeaten young prospects will put their perfect records at risk in bouts where somebody’s “O” definitely must go.

“Top to bottom, this is one of the most competitive fight cards I have ever seen,” promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events, said. “Quite often, promoters tend to ignore the preliminary fights and assume that the fans and media in the arena will be happy to sit and watch nothing interesting until the televised portion of the evening begins,” she added. “We believe that the fans in the arena deserve a full night of entertainment, and we intend to make sure that they get their money’s worth on Feb. 27th.”

ESPN Friday Night Fights: Glen Johnson vs Daniel Judah
By: Brad Marchetti
Despite handing out beat downs to Roy Jones Jr., Antonio Tarver and most recently Chad Dawson, Glen Johnson is still searching for another big money payday. This Friday Johnson, 48-12-2, 33 KO’s, will be featured in a low-profile ESPN Friday Night Fights rematch against Daniel Judah, 23-3-3, 10 KO’s, at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL. The four above Johnson victims all trumped the workmanlike “Road Warrior” in flash but lacked the substance to defeat the 40-year old Jamaican. The boxing betting odds for the Glen Johnson vs Daniel Judah fight have Johnson as a 6-1 favorite.

Rooney, McDermott, and Pound for Pound Impressive
By Danny Serratelli, ringside
Serratelli, McDermott, Rooney and guestsPound for Pound Promotions put on their best show to date from Scheutzen park in North Bergen New Jersey. Their stable of fighters come to bang and the majority of them make for either exciting fights or brutal knockouts. In the main event of the evening, Bayonne’s Bobby Rooney, 9-2-1, 5 KO’s scored an exciting knockout over Indiana’s James Morrow, 11-12-3, 5 KO’s. The end came in round number 2 when referee Lindsday Page stopped the fight at 1:49 of round number 2.
In the fight of the night Jersey City's Danny McDermott 7-1, 2 KO’s was in a war with North Bergen's Ricardo Rosas 2-5-1, 1 KO who never stopped coming forward as McDermott boxed and picked his spots to brawl, cropping some big right hands in the crowd pleasing round match. McDermott is often energized by the crowd and he fights with emotion, however he didn’t fall into any traps set by Rosa who taunted him early to try to get Danny to fight his fight. McDermott got the decision by scores of 58-56 by McKaie and 59-55 by Lederman and Hill.
Cotto Returns; Duddy Outworks Vanda
By: Danny Serratelli, ringside

Miguel Cotto, 33-1, 27 KO’s returned to the ring for the first time since his war with Antonio Margarito in July. Cotto stopped Brit, Michael Jennings, 34-2, 16 KO’s at 2:38 of round number 5. Jennings moved well for the first few rounds, but was caught with a devastating left hook in the 4th round and never seemed to fully recover from it.
At the end of the 4th, top notch referee, Benjio Estevez was on top of the action and was close to stopping the contest at that point, but Jennings showed some grit in surviving the round. Jennings ring entrance was interesting, which featured the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK, but it was down hill from there. He was quick and initially appeared to be relatively durable, but once Miguel hurt him the big left hook, and followed up with some good body work it quickly became clear who the stronger fighter was. Jennings to his credit had some fight in him early, but it was amazing how men in the same weight class can look so different. Cotto was clearly the bigger stronger fighter, much the way it appeared that Margarito was the bigger stronger fighter against Cotto in his last outing. Jennings had never been stopped prior to this fight.

By: Declan Hughes
North Bergen NJ – I’ve been covering Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, 7-1-1 (2kos), for a few of years now and last Thursday at Schuetzen Park Ballroom was by far his best boxing performance since he has been a pro.
McDermott, a lifelong Hudson County native, originally from North Bergen, now out of Jersey City, was in there with another North Bergen slugger, Ricardo Rosas. Rosas, 29, born and breed in Mexico moved to New Jersey as a teen and learned how to box out of the same North Bergen gym McDermott started.

ALEXIS CAMACHO
In the main event of the evening, Alexis Camacho lost a hard fought ten round decision to Carlos Molina. Each fighter gave as good as he got throughout the fight, with Molina using a slightly higher work rate to out hustle Camacho. Camacho continuously stalked Molina throughout the fight but Molina was the busier fighter, landing combinations from the outside while the heavy handed Camacho looked for one big shot to close the show. With the loss Camacho drops to (17-2, 16KO) while Molina improves to (15-4-1,5KO).

Battles in the ring the easier ones for Duddy
IRISHTIMES.COM
Thursday, February 12, 2009
AMERICA AT LARGE: Since falling out with Irish Ropes, the Derry fighter has become the object of an ugly lawsuit, writes GEORGE KIMBALL
WHEN EDDIE McLoughlin hired Patrick Burns to be John Duddy’s new trainer last summer he didn’t anticipate he might be inviting the fox into the henhouse, but in the view of the Mayo-born promoter, that’s pretty much how it worked out.
At Jack Dempsey’s pub off Herald Square in Manhattan yesterday, McLoughlin presided over a press luncheon officially launching what has become a New York staple – Irish Ropes’ annual St Patrick’s Day card at Madison Square Garden. This year’s edition will showcase not Duddy, but another Irish middleweight, Limerick’s Andy Lee, fighting three-time world title challenger Antwun Echols.
Barely four months had elapsed since, following another press conference in the same pub on October 8th, McLoughlin sent Duddy off to Burns’ Miami training camp to begin preparations for a November 21st tune-up bout against Sam Hill. Within weeks Duddy had a new de facto manager, Craig Hamilton, the seven-year-old relationship between the boxer and his promoter was in tatters, the Hill fight (along with an even more lucrative January bout against Ronald Hearns) had been scuttled, and Duddy’s contract with Irish Ropes was the object of an unpleasant lawsuit, filed in US District Court.

In Defense of Margarito
By: Saul Lelchuk

Brickcityboxing.com’s Saul Lelchuk’s response to:
Margarito’s actions could have been fatal
By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports Feb 10, 8:19 pm EST http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_ylt=Ao2gKVK9NWNIBaxHDcj4A5SUxLYF?slug=ki-suspension021009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
I wholeheartedly agree with the Kevin Iole “Margarito’s Actions Could Have Been Fatal” column where he points to the difference between cheating in boxing and any other sport. And given the inherent differences between boxing and other sports, and the potential increased danger that boxing presents, I fully agree with his assertion that such matters be handled with utmost seriousness to ensure they do not happen again.
But I did wonder about certain phrases that were used in the article. Suggesting that Margarito’s action had “no other explanation… other than a cold-blooded attempt to maim” Mosley seems unfair. Even if, at worst, Margarito did know about the wraps (a fact on which I will not speculate), his desire to win a fight by landing more damaging punches and by extension hurting his opponent seems, to me, a far cry from a desire to maim. To maim means to “injure or wound seriously and leave permanent disfiguration or mutilation.” Was this really what Margarito and his trainer wanted to do?

Nakash, Shmouel Win at the Blue!
By: Jeff Miller @ ringside
The action was non-stop Friday night at the Legendary Blue Horizon in North Philadelphia, as promoter Vernoca Michael along with matchmaker Don Elbaum put together a six-bout card.
The main event was a quick one as Israel’s Ran Nakash 17-0 (13 KOs) scored a second round TKO over Ohio’s Ryan Carrol 7-2 (4 Kos) in a scheduled eight round cruiserweight matchup. The crisp body punching of Nakash seemed to be the difference, as he put Carrol down three times, forcing Steve Smoger to stop the action at 2:06 of round two.
Darchinyan Has Too Much Power, Skills for Arce in Title Fight
Aremenian champ shows some skills en route to 11th round TKO
By: Adam Ramirez
FightNetBoxing.com
ANAHEIM - Vic Darchinyan strutted into the ring Saturday night with a Cheshire Cat-like smirk. He exuded confidence and had a look on his face that said: "I own this guy, just watch."
Then the Armenian champion proceeded to follow up his braggadocio with a strong, 11-round TKO of Mexican Jorge Arce to defend his 115-pound IBF, WBC and WBA world titles.
The partisan crowd in the Honda Center made the arena feel like a World Cup match. Darchinyan fans waved red, orange and blue Aremenian flags while Arce's Mexican supporters changed "Mexico, Mexico!" The Mexican fans loudly jeered Darchinyan as he entered the ring, which only seemed to make him smirk that much more.

Legendary cutman passes away at 92
By: Michele Chong
Our friend cutman Chuck Bodak passed away this morning at age 92 from long-term effects of a stroke he first suffered in August 2007. The feisty Bodak managed to hold off his biggest foe, “Father Time”–time and time again before the final bell rang. Born June 3, 1916 in Gary, Indiana, he was a renowned cutman for more than 60 champions.
Well-known in corners, Bodak had worked with many elite fighters including Muhammad Ali, Tommy Hearns, Julio Cesar Chavez, Evander Holyfield and Oscar De La Hoya. He continued to work in the ring–still active in the boxing world right up until the time of his stroke. The cutman was famous for his unique headbands, his handmade jewelry and for his colorful collages that he liked to give away as gifts.

CALZAGHE RETIRES; COULD HE HAVE BEAT JOHN CONTEH?
By: Jim Amato
Joe Calzaghe is now the toast of the British Kingdom. After his long run as super middleweight champion, Joe conquered Bernard Hopkins to become the world's best light heavyweight. Then he dominated a faded legend in Roy Jones Jr. Well who would be next? I know Antonio Tarver has been calling Joe out. How about Chad Dawson, Glen Johnson, Erdei or a Hopkins rematch ? What about Kelly Pavlik ? Well it will be none of the above as Joe has decided to retire after an undefeated fifteen year career. Will Joe go down in history as myth or legend?
ALI AND THE "ACORN"
By: Jim Amato
It was to be the last time the incomparable Muhammad Ali would ever successfully defend the heavyweight championship. It would be held in boxing’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. It would also feature Ohio’s most popular heavyweight of the last quarter century, Earnie Shavers.
The “Acorn” as Ali had dubbed Shavers would be a prohibitive underdog. He was accorded a puncher’s chance at best against the aging but still crafty king of the heavyweights. What transpired the night of September 29, 1977 established Earnie as a legitimate contender and forecast the soon to be demise of “The Greatest”.
