Brickcity Pick: Margarito vs. Mosley Prediction
By: Danny Serratelli
I have been shocked to read that anyone is picking “Sugar” Shane Mosley. I thought that I would be 1 out of a hundred who would be leaning towards the 37 year old future Hall of Famer. There is a reason that Shane is roughly a 4-1 betting underdog and that is his age along with the fact that his losses have come against tall busy fighters like Antonio Margarito. Antonio is also going to be one of the biggest men and biggest punchers that Shane has met in his career.
Mosley, at his best and in his prime, would beat Antonio Margarito based on the style match up and Mosley’s toughness. Shane would be able to handle Margarito’s pressure and use it against him at times. Shane at his slickest is slicker than Miguel Cotto and while Cotto beat Shane in a close fight and Margarito beat Cotto in a war, that means nothing here.
There is a good chance that the end is near for Mosley. An older fighter, at 37 runs the risk of coming into the ring and just not having it tonight. If that happens to Shane he will survive on what’s left of his skills, his experience and an incredible heart that he has always possessed, but he will have no chance to win the fight. The pick here is that Sugar Shane would not have taken this fight to lose. After watching Golden Boy stable mate Bernard Hopkins school Kelly Pavlik and then mate Oscar De La Hoya get battered by Manny Pacquiao, Shane has seen what can happen tonight on both ends of the spectrum.
Look for Shane to put together a gutsy performance and Margarito unable to duplicate his near perfect performance against Miguel Cotto. Expect an upset as many close rounds start to go Shane’s way in a tough fight from beginning to end for both fighters. Again, this is all contingent on Shane being near his best. If he isn’t he is in big trouble. If he is look for Shane to out hustle Margarito in enough rounds to pull out a split decision victory.
