GSP & PENN DO IT AGAIN!!! UFC 94 MAIN EVENT READY TO EXPLODE

By: Michael Gawler

The first time these two men faced each other, Georges St. Pierre found victory in a controversial split decision. According to BJ Penn, he spent the hours following the fight at the bar while GSP was at the hospital. BJ and his fans felt he won this fight while the judges agreed with Georges and his fans that he won the fight. I personally believe that GSP did enough to earn the victory as well. However, this is an argument that has been ongoing for nearly 3 years. The good news is... Saturday night their gonna go at it again!!!

Mosley Dominates Margarito

By: Leszek Dowgier
In front of a record sell-out crowd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the 37-year-old “Sugar” Shane Mosley (46-5, 39KOs) turned back the clock and defeated the rugged, fearsome and granite-chinned Antonio Margarito (37-6, 27 KOs). However, not only did Mosley pull off the upset victory, but he did so in devastating and dominant fashion by doing what many thought impossible - knocking out the “Tijuana Tornado”.

From the opening bell Mosley controlled the fight, using his jab, quick combinations and footwork to keep Margarito off balance and at bay. However, one of the smartest things Mosley did throughout the fight was to continually tie up Margarito after throwing his searing combinations. Time and time again, Mosley would connect with vicious shots to both the head and body then tie up the larger Margarito, not allowing the (now former) WBA Champion to return fire.

Impressive Mosley Should NOT be Anointed King Just Yet

By: Christopher Roche

The “Sugar” Shane Mosley vs. Antonio Margarito battle proved two things: 1) If tickets are priced reasonably, fans will pack the house and 2) Speed usually kills.

In front of a record crowd at Staples Center, Mosley picked apart a gutsy Margarito, on his way to stopping the Mexican warrior in round nine.

Despite Mosley’s being a 4-1 underdog, should we be that shocked?

I always thought a good boxer with a proper game plan would beat Margarito decisively, and I picked both Paul Williams and Miguel Cotto to defeat him. Williams, of course, got the job done, while Cotto ran out of gas and succumbed to Margarito’s will. Despite losing, Cotto had the blueprint mostly correct. He boxed and peppered Margarito almost at will for much of the fight. Cotto’s two biggest downfalls were his abandoning the body attack and his willingness to back up against the ropes. Mosley saw this on film, and he did not make the same mistakes. The adjustments that Mosley made on Cotto’s blueprint proved disastrous for Margarito.

Brickcity Picks: Mosley vs. Margarito

Jerson Ravelo, Brick City, super middleweight contender:
Mosley will defeat Margarito. Mosley has too much experience and knows how to beat him, which will be by giving him angles all night long. Margarito will never land a clean shot.

Nicky De Marco, Lightweight, owner DeMarco's Boxing Club, Tottenville, Staten Island:
I have Shane by decision.

Mike Gawler
SUGAR SHANE VS. MARGARITO?? OK With ME!!
When this fight was announced it got me thinking that the boxing world was in for a treat! Two big names and not even on a PPV card! Like everyone else, I began thinking that Mosley was probably finished and that Antonio Margarito would likely walk right through him. I remembered the battles each fighter had with Miguel Cotto and their outcomes. Then my memory shifted to Mosley's incredible battle and KO of Mayorga back in Sept of '08. If the Shane Mosley of that fight shows up and stays focused, I will predict a slightly different outcome.

Brickcity Pick: Margarito vs. Mosley Prediction

By: Danny Serratelli
I have been shocked to read that anyone is picking “Sugar” Shane Mosley. I thought that I would be 1 out of a hundred who would be leaning towards the 37 year old future Hall of Famer. There is a reason that Shane is roughly a 4-1 betting underdog and that is his age along with the fact that his losses have come against tall busy fighters like Antonio Margarito. Antonio is also going to be one of the biggest men and biggest punchers that Shane has met in his career.

Mosley, at his best and in his prime, would beat Antonio Margarito based on the style match up and Mosley’s toughness. Shane would be able to handle Margarito’s pressure and use it against him at times. Shane at his slickest is slicker than Miguel Cotto and while Cotto beat Shane in a close fight and Margarito beat Cotto in a war, that means nothing here.

Prediction for Margarito-Mosley

By: Saul Lelchuk

As many others have correctly said, this is a fight that could go either way, and neither a Mosley nor a Margarito victory would surprise me. But I can’t go against Margarito in this one, especially since he is at his peak, while Mosley has left his heyday a bit behind. I think that Mosley’s superior experience – compared to Cotto, for instance, let alone someone like Cintron – will help him, and I think he might fight a successful fight. But I also think that he will have a bit too much confidence in his speed to rescue him from the onslaught of the Tijuana Tornado, and I think that he will be surprised when he hits Margarito flush, with some serious shots (this will happen) and doesn’t hurt or even really fluster him.

To say that ANDRE BERTO "dominated" his competition in the U.S. Amateur Boxing scene would be a drastic understatement. The fast hands that accompany his barbarous aggression did wonders at collapsing all opposition and basically "forced" the judges to favor him. As Bertos amateur career skyrocketed and his talents were leaving behind a wake of bullied foes, his path to superstardom seemed inevitable:
make the Olympic team, win the Gold, filter which signing bonus is most hefty & reign as Americas next Boxing SUPERSTAR.

ANDREI ARLOVSKI AND FREDDIE ROACH AFFLICTION M-1 "DAY OF RECKONING" CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Tom Atencio: Hello ladies and gentlemen.Thank you very much to Freddie Roach and Andrei Arlovski for being here.

Andrei Arlovski: First of all hello everybody, we are almost 10 days from the biggest fight in my career and I'm very excited. I can't wait. And please ask your questions.

Freddie Roach: We had a great training camp to get ready for the fight. And I'm just looking for a big W on the 24th.

Question: Freddie-- My question has to do with Andrei's progress since you've been with him. How much progress would you say he's made in his boxing skills and in what area in particular are you most impressed with his progress?

Freddie Roach: Well it's a combination. His hand speed has really improved much and his selection of punches. And I think the biggest progress is his footwork. He fights like a little guy. He has great movement for a heavyweight and I think it's going to be a big factor in this fight.

Q: As far as Fedor's standup, obviously he's not a professional boxer but his standup is noted in MMA circles. Are there things in his striking ability that you spotted and you think Andrei can take advantage of?

Freddie Roach: I do. I think that his footwork as a boxer is not that great. I know he is a good puncher coming forward, but as far as his forward contact rating - I think we have a huge advantage in the footwork and we can take advantage of that.

Sharkie's Machine: Berto Gets New Year's Gift from the Judges

By: Frank Gonzalez Jr.,
www.doghouseboxing.com

Saturday night in Biloxi Mississippi , Welterweight titlist Andre Berto (24-0, 19 KO’s) retained his WBC title after what looked like his first loss after going 12 rounds against seasoned contender, Luis Collazo (29-4, 14 KO’s). This Saturday also marks the first major bogus decision applied in 2009.

Berto vs. Collazo felt like an easy fight to score in favor of Collazo, who landed the cleaner punches all night and was obviously the better skilled boxer. This was something of a coming out party for Berto, who faced his first ‘top ten’ caliber opponent since being appointed WBC champ after fighting Miguel Angel Rodriguez last year for the title vacated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. Hey, Rodriguez wasn’t even ranked in the top 15, so how did he qualify to fight for a vacated title? The answers are as crooked as a politician.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO AND DONALD TRUMP, JR. AFFLICTION M-1 "DAY OF RECKONING"

*Please note that Fedor's answers below were translated by Steve Bash of M-1 Global

Donald Trump, Jr: Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be on the phone with everyone here and to be a part of Affliction and the fight that we're putting on next Saturday. You know as we all know Fedor's done an incredible job going through the ranks of all the champions in this sport and has really proven to myself and to frankly everyone else that watches the sport what a competitor he is. I think Andrei is also a great fighter and we're really excited to put on this show. It's going to be phenomenal. We are just excited about our entrance into the MMA world, a sport that I've had the great fortune of following from the very early stages following my father as a kid probably in early elementary school going to these fights. Perhaps a little bit unconventional but always a lot of fun. To be dealing with the best in the world in anything is always a pleasure. So just watching Fedor do his thing to put on these fights with this group, we really look forward to making a big statement in the MMA world. Coming up through the ranks, obviously paying our dues because we are new to this. And we don't have the hubris to assume that we know everything, but we're doing the best we can to really stack the odds in our favor, associate with the best people in the industry. Again with Fedor and M-1, with Golden Boy, obviously with the Affliction people and the Trump Organization, and so really excited to put on this show. Hope you guys all enjoy it and with that we'll turn it over to the guy you really want to hear from in this case, Fedor Emelianenko.

Hopkins Wants Calzaghe…& Everything Else I Learned by Watching ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”

By: Christopher Roche

Bernard Hopkins wants a rematch with Joe Calzaghe, and he is willing to travel to Wales to get it. How do I know this?

Hopkins is a new analyst for ESPN

Well, Hopkins was recently hired as studio analyst for ESPN, and he said as much in his debut last night in the “Friday Night Fights” studio with Brian Kenny. Hopkins also thinks that “Sugar” Shane Mosley is going to outpoint Antonio Margarito (not really an unbiased opinion), and the “Executioner” alluded to a possible third match with Jermain Taylor. Hopkins also said that he is done fighting young guys, because he wants boxing to have its next act. He is passing the torch to champions such as Chad Dawson.

In the most poignant exchange of the night, Teddy Atlas asked Hopkins about the important mental aspect of fighting. Atlas was watching one of the fighters last night fall into survival mode, and he wanted to know if Hopkins ever had to catch himself from just trying to survive in a fight. Hopkins surprisingly said yes. Against Segundo Mercado, Hopkins had been knocked down twice, and he was in hostile territory in Quito, Ecuador. Hopkins said he had to pull himself out of the survival mode and go back to fighting. He was able to squeak out with a draw in that bout.

HANDS OF STONE : The Life And Legend Of Roberto Duran

Book Review
By: Jim Amato

Author: Christian Giudice

Roberto Duran is my favorite fighter of all time. Because of this fact I thought I may be a little bias in my opinion of the book " Hands Of Stone ". Would I over rate it because the subject was Duran or would I be too harsh and expect too much? All I know is when it hit the shelf, I had to have it. Although time is not a luxury for me these days I was going to make time to read this book. I'm glad I did.
