Adamek’s Roadmap: Estrada, Arreola...Wladimir Klitschko?

By Les Dowgier

Former cruiserweight kingpin Tomasz “Goral” Adamek, 39-1 (27 KOs), is continuing his march through the heavyweight division and appears to have a general plan of assault mapped out. On February 2, 2010 the hardman from Zywiec, Poland (now making his home in Jersey City, NJ) will square off against former US Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada, 16-2 (4 KOs), at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Next, in a fight which has yet to be arranged, Adamek may be taking on the rugged and hard-hitting Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola, 28-1 (25 KOs) in Arreola’s home town of Riverside, CA. And, according to long-time Adamek manager Ziggy Rozalski, should Adamek be victorious against the tough Mexican-American, he will have a great chance to meet the winner of the March 30th showdown between “Fast” Eddie Chambers, 35-1 (18 KOs) and IBF and WBO heavyweight champion “Dr. Steelhammer” Wladimir Klitschko 53-3 (47 KOs).

MAYWEATHER PROMOTIONS AND GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

(December 28, 2009) . . . After a Christmas weekend filled with comments and reports related to the potential mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions are issuing the following statement in order to set the record straight.

Let the record be clear: Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum are threatening to walk away from the largest fight in history.

The fact is that random blood and urine testing was one of the many deal points and was listed along with the others, such as the financial split, the weight, financial penalty for being overweight, the appointment of the foreign sales agent, the production of the marketing assets, the gloves and many more. Team Mayweather made major concessions in many of these areas and we were optimistic that Team Pacquiao would do the same as it related to the request for random blood and urine testing, which Floyd Mayweather agreed to immediately.

DeMarco Next Victim for Valero

By: Ted Sares:

“El Inca” is an equal opportunity destroyer having dispatched Colombians, Americans, Panamanians, Argentineans, Mexicans, Armenians, Japanese, and even Venezuelans. And whether he fights in his adopted base of Japan or his native Venezuela (or somewhere in between), he brings incredible excitement into the ring, and it’s as much about his vulnerabilities as it is his skills. The way he used to come in throwing wide and looping punches from different angles just begged for a fast and straight puncher to take him out and most aficionados knew it. Indeed, he closely resembled his friend Daniel Ponce de Leon who threw wide (and wild), albeit powerful, punches. However, Daniel’s style was finally solved by Juan Manuel Lopez who moved straight in between the Mexican’s wild punches and waxed him in the first round.

Ted Sares’s Top Boxing Awards for 2009: Pacquiao, Mosley, Roach, More!

By Ted Sares:

1. Fighter of the Year: Manny Pacquiao

An easy choice this year. After retiring Oscar De La Hoya late in 2008, he rendered unconscious Ricky Hatton in two and then stopped Miguel Cotto after he finally chased him down in the 12th round. Manny is THE event fighter in boxing going into 2010.

2. Fight of the Year: Bernard Dunne vs. Ricardo “Maestrito” Cordoba

Dunne was dropped and hurt badly twice in the fifth round while his Panamanian opponent was decked in the third and then three times more in the eleventh round after which the fight was finally stopped in front of a roaring crowd in Dublin.

Support the Christian Rivera Foundation

http://www.cristianriverafoundation.org

On January 22nd, 2007, 4-year-old Cristian was diagnosed with Pontine Glioma, which is an inoperable brain tumor located in the stem of the brain.

After the doctors examined Cristian and reviewed his MRI, we received the worst news of our lives. The tumor was inoperable and the average lifespan for a child with Pontine Glioma after diagnosis is 9 to 18 months.

Cristian fought his battle with Pontine Glioma for 2 years and a few days. Cristian’s mother and father never gave up hope. They prayed that God would heal their beloved child. Cristian kept fighting against this form of cancer. He passed away on January 25, 2009, in the loving arms of his mother and father.

Cristian’s story magnifies just how important the work of the Cristian Rivera Foundation truly is. That work is to find a cure for the inoperable Pontine Glioma brain stem tumor that ultimately claimed the life of Cristian Rivera. Your tax-deductible donation to the Cristian Rivera Foundation will one day find a cure for Pontine Glioma so no other family will have to suffer the grief that Cristian Rivera’s family has endured.

JOIN OUR CAUSE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Please click on the “Donation” tab on the “Home Page” to make a tax-deductible donation to the Cristian Rivera Foundation. All of your donations will go directly to finding a cure for Pontine Glioma. All monies donated will be given to those medical facilities and scientific trials specifically researching cures for Pontine Glioma inoperable brain stem tumors.

Chip Mitchell’s Interview with Floyd Mayweather, Sr.

PART I

Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather Sr.

I recently had the opportunity to interview one of the best trainers in boxing, Mr. Floyd Joy Mayweather, Sr. Here is PART I of the interview….

Chip Mitchell: Mr. Mayweather, let’s jump right into it. One of the sanctioning bodies may soon introduce a rule to banish fathers from working their son’s corners in boxing. Let’s hypothesize that your brother Roger has to do prison time. This rule could prevent you from training or co-training your own son in the biggest fights of his career. Do you think some shenanigans are going down to freeze you out? If so, should we refer to this as the Mayweather, Sr. rule?

Floyd Mayweather: That’s probably what it is, you know, because anything that Floyd learned he learned from me anyway. I fought like that, Roger didn’t fight like that. I’m the only one that fought and blocked shots with my shoulder and countered back. Roger never fought that way. Maybe that’s what they are trying to do. If they do I think it’s a bad thing. But everything happens for a reason. Me and my son broke up for a reason. It’s a lot of things you don’t see. That’s when the problems come in. When you hear people say his dad didn’t train him or didn’t do this or his dad didn’t do that…. All lies! Total lies! My son could fight when he got here. Things happen and things come between you. I didn’t treat him that way. Ain’t no way in the world he could beat those kinds of fighters that he is now if his daddy had not been there to show him the ropes. No way!

RODRIGO VALDEZ ; He Was Badder Then "Bennie"

By: Jim Amato
With all the recent hoopla for the respected Bernard Hopkins and his adding to the legacy of great Philly fighters...

Well here goes... The great city of Philadelphia has produced an array of world class middleweights over the years. Hopkins has brought great pride to the long line of Philly middlewights who came before him. Tough guys like Stanley " Kitten " Hayward, Eugene "Cyclone" Hart, Bobby " Boogaloo" Watts, Willie "The Worm" Monroe and possibly he toughest of them all, "Bad" Bennie Briscoe.

When people talk of Hopkins now they compare him to Stanley Ketchel, Harry Greb, Sugar Ray Robinson and his more recent contemporaries, Carlos Monzon and Marvin Hagler. Did someone forget a classy and fine middleweight named Rodrigo Valdez?

MADDALONE LOOKS TO BRING EXCITEMENT TO FRANCE

When heavyweight fan favorite Vinny Maddalone (32-5, 23KO) takes on former two-time cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck (33-4, 22KO) this Thursday, one thing is for sure, the fans in attendance will be treated to one very exciting fight. The bout, scheduled for eight rounds, will take place at the Halle Carpentier Arena in Mormeck's native Paris, France.

VINNY MADDALONE

"I can't wait to get into the ring and go to war with Mormeck," stated Maddalone. "Mormeck comes right at you and likes to bang, which is exactly the type of fight I dream about being in. There isn't going to be any dancing around or pop shotting from the outside, this is going to be one of those old school fashion wars that boxing fans love to see. We are both going to be right in each other's faces from the start of the fight, saying, 'here I am, let me see what you got'. I'm really looking forward to putting on a fun and exciting show for all those in attendance come fight night."

Danny Serratelli and Vinny Maddalone

Maddalone, coming off a 4th round TKO over Benji Baker in his last fight in April, is known for his crowd pleasing style, and punching power. Maddalone is also known throughout the boxing circles as a bleeder, something that Maddalone thrives off of.

"When I see blood, that's when I really start to fight, I guess it gets me going," says Maddalone with a smile.

IN SEARCH OF A FAIR SHAKE

http://www.hbo.com/boxing/
On the heels of a much-maligned decision in the Ali Funeka/Joan Guzman bout, the score-settling December 12 rematch between Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi has placed judging in the center of the ring.
December 7, 2009 - by Dave Larzelere

When Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi square off in their rematch on December 12 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, the judges at ringside may be under almost as much scrutiny as the fighters themselves. The second half of 2009 has brought with it two of the most controversial decisions in boxing's recent memory—the much disputed unanimous decision for Diaz in the first Diaz/Malignaggi fight in August, and then the universally declaimed majority draw in the Ali Funeka/Joan Guzman debacle on November 28.

Bryan Demolishes Fallen In Newark!

Newark, NJ – Jeremy “Hollywood” Bryan once again displayed why his moniker fits the bill after putting away Darren Fallen inside of two rounds last night in the main event of “The Brawl in Brick City” at Essex County College in Newark, NJ.

Both men took their time in the opening moments of fight, with Bryan patiently throwing jabs while Fallen tried using his reach advantage from the outside. Near the end of the first, Bryan decked Fallen with a short left hook, but the Philadelphian made it back to his feet to finish the round. Bryan picked up where he left off in the second, dropping The 18 fight veteran hard to the canvas with a huge right hand.

The game Fallen arose from the knockdown but was dropped between the ropes shortly thereafter following a strong combination, forcing his corner to throw in the towel at 2:35.

HUSTLER BOXING FIGHT-CARD

Manhattans Grand Ballroom
December 3rd
By:Ricky Ray Taylor

(as originally posted on www.BraggingRightsCorner.com)

-----------------------------------

Thursday nights HUSTLER BOXING Fight-card in Manhattans Grand Ballroom had a few surprises in store for ticket buyers. Scrapping "2" of the 7 scheduled bouts at the last minute was one of them.

Million-Dollar Baby MAUREEN SHEA had been advertised to fight Tampa's JENNA SHIVER. Evidently a cyst was found on Shivers brain a few hours before the fight and she was forced to withdraw from the card. Let's hope she is persuaded to retire.

Fortunately however, there were some fireworks in the 5 bouts that followed:

JAYWON WOODS vs JOSH HARRIS, 6 round Cruiser-weights
Woods came in with a 7-0 record. Harris was 4-3-1. Some may remember Josh Harris from last months YONKERS show where he derailed 10-1 prospect ALEX MEJIAS via a 1st round KO. Well, he did the same thing tonight to WOODS. 1:17 into round 4 of a back and forth fight, Harris replicated his south-paw left-hook on Woods and sent him crashing to his knees. Unfortunately (for Woods) he beat the count. Woods bravely got up and to weather a 10 punch flurry until the ref stopped the fight.
*As Woods' handlers were taking his gloves off, you could hear him pleading
"WHAT HAPPENED?" before he stormed out of the ring to the dressing room.
WINNER HARRIS ~ KO 1:17 rd 4

The State Of Today's Boxing Game: The Decline Of Amateur Boxing In The United States

By: Brad Marchetti, Doghouse Boxing

There is a cancerous problem today in the boxing world with too many inept boxers and trainers in the United States. The only semblance of actual skilled boxing I have seen as a member of the sports media is at the world-class level. Most local boxing cards are usually a crude version of the sweet science without much science behind it at all. While not every boxer can be a Sugar Ray Leonard, there are fundamentals that are not even being used by today's boxers. Most boxing fans are knowledgeable and have noticed the diminished skil level of today’s pugilist. The ability to get out of the way of a punch is rarely being taught properly nowadays. Even some of the more promising boxers end up getting permanently brain damaged when they step up in class against boxers that have real punching power.

Andre Ward Shakes Up The "Super-Six" - Now Who's The Favourite?

By: James Slater www.Eastsideboxing.com- Unbeaten former Olympian Andre Ward did far more than just win his opening fight in the hugely exciting "Super-Six" tournament last night in his hometown of Oakland, California; he also scored the first big upset of the tourney and he also restored American pride by becoming the first U.S fighter to have won a bout in the tourney.

Stopping the defending WBA 168-pound champion and one of the tourney's overall favourites in the mighty Mikkel Kessler, Ward must now be looked at, along with Germany's Arthur Abraham, as the leader of the talented group.

Certainly, and no disrespect to Jermain Taylor, Ward will be a pretty big favourite to win his next fight in the Show Time tourney, against the former middleweight king. Knocked out badly by Abraham in his "Super-Six" opener, Taylor made us wonder if he'd even carry on in the tourney. He is going to, though, and now he faces an uphill task of the highest order against the 21-0(13) 25-year-old.

Andre Ward vs Mikkel Kessler Boxing Betting Odds

By: Brad Marchetti, Doghouse Boxing (Nov 21, 2009)

Tonight the Showtime super-six boxing series continues when Mikkel Kessler faces Andre Ward in a 12-round W.B.A super-middleweight title fight. Ward is a former gold-medalist that will be facing the toughest test of his career when he faces the imposing champion from Denmark. Ward has home-field advantage in this bout fighting in front of his hometown crowd of Oakland but he might not need it. The Andre Ward vs. Mikkel Kessler Odds have Kessler as a -220 favorite.

Analysis: Mikkel Kessler is a muscular boxer\puncher with excellent power, technique and stamina. Kessler has beaten a high level of competition and his only loss came in a close fight with former pound-4-pound fighter Joe Calzaghe. Kessler is a pressure fighter that works behind a fast and heavy left jab that is among the best in the business. Kessler can punch with both hands and has a straight-right that can separate men from their working brain cells. Kessler works the body effectively and wears opponents down with his pressure and physicality. Kessler is somewhat mechanical and can be hurt but has shown a solid punch resistance throughout his career. Kessler works behind a high-guard with his chin tucked to his chest making him a difficult target to tag cleanly. The Andre Ward vs. Mikkel Kessler Odds Over\Under is at 9.5 rounds with the OVER at -240.

FOUR SUPER SIX FIGHTERS MAKE PREDICTIONS ON WINNER OF MIKKEL KESSLER-ANDRE WARD FIGHT

European Boxers Taking Kessler; Americans Are Picking Ward
To Win Nov. 21 Group Stage 1 Match On SHOWTIME®

NEW YORK (Nov. 19, 2009) — The two Europeans boxers – victorious over their American opponents in the first round of the Super Six World Boxing Classic – are predicting Mikkel “Viking Warrior” Kessler will beat Andre “S.O.G.” Ward in the final Group Stage 1 matchup Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

The two Americans who suffered losses don’t see it that way and are for Ward. “I'm going with Ward,” said Andre Dirrell, after his Group Stage 1 defeat to Carl Froch in October. Dirrell, along with Froch, Arthur Abraham and Jermain Taylor, will be ringside Nov. 21 to catch all the action. “Ward has the ability to win,” continued Dirrell. “This is his biggest fight so he'll have to stick to his game plan but I'm going with him."

Manny Pacquiao....One of THE GREATEST of all time...Floyd are you out there?

Brick City's...Word on the Street

By: Danny Serratelli

Manny Pacquiao padded his legacy last night be soundly defeating a true welterweight and champion in Miguel Cotto. It was a brilliant performance to follow brilliant performances against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, however this was the most impressive of those three considering all other factors. Pacquiao has continued to improve his game through out his career, and trainer Freddie Roach has also earned his paycheck along the way. Pacquiao's ability to both take a punch and hurt people at welterweight, after turning professional at 106 pounds, and making his name in the lighter weight divisions is mind blowing to anyone who has been in the ring or knows boxing.

Manny Pacquiao TKO's Miguel Cotto: Firepower Equals Fireworks - Ringside Boxing Report

By: John Novoselac at ringside, Doghouse Boxing (Nov 15, 2009) Photo © German Villasenor, Doghouse Boxing

Over 12 absolutely action packed rounds, Manny Pacquiao proved himself to be a force in the welterweight division with a 12th round TKO victory over Miguel Cotto.

Cotto came out fighting behind a stiff jab and disciplined approach, that included some nice body shots, and came out of the first round looking to be able to handle the Filipino fury.

However, the 2nd round saw Pacquaio's left hand fiding its target, and proved to be the harbinger of things to come as a war erupted. 45 seconds into the third round saw a Pacquiao straight left shot put Cotto down shockingly. Cotto appeared to shake it off and set some traps later in the round in the corners, with no real success as he ate counters for his trouble.

PACQUIAO VS. COTTO-WHO ARE YOU PICKING?

Athletes, Celebrities, Boxers and Writers Predict Who Will Win the
November 14 Showdown

LAS VEGAS (November 9, 2009) - BIG George Foreman leads the list of boxers, professional athletes, celebrities and the esteemed press core who all have opinions about the outcome of FIREPOWER: MANNY PACQUIAO and MIGUEL COTTO. The championship bout takes placeon Saturday November 14 at MGM Grand Garden Arena and will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

In just five days the pound-for-pound king Pacquiao and three-time world champion Cotto meet in the ring in one of the most talked about match-ups in recent boxing history. Some of the most well-known fighters, celebrities, athletes and writers are abuzz with talk of Saturday's evenly matched battle.

From Foreman to P. Diddy, Trump to Hopkins, below please find the predictions of these famous personalities as they answer the question "Pacquiao vs. Cotto-Who will win and why?"

THE BOXERS ARE PICKIN'...

"I think there would have been a good opportunity for Pacquiao to win if he faced Cotto before he fought Clottey, but now Cotto is thinking defense. I think Cotto is going to pull out a decision, and now because of the terrible beating he took against Margarito, he knows he can't get into a knockdown drag out brawl. He's going to be smarter, and I think Cotto wins in a 12 round decision.

"Pacquiao has been riding high and has beaten some of the best in the world. And it leaves you kind of complacent when you're winning. And even if you don't want it to, sometimes you can't get up for a big fight. And that's a plus for Cotto.

I think it's an excellent fight. But when you're riding high you think you're going to walk through your opponent. You get overconfident. People in your camp tell you you're going to win. And you have your spies in camp, telling you about the other guy. When I faced Ali, Frazier and Norton both had beaten Ali, and I had knocked them out pretty easily. So when I faced Ali, I had that confidence, and you think I surely can beat this guy. So I know the feeling, and I think that will happen to Pacquiao."
- George Foreman, Former Two-Time Heavyweight World Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist, and Entrepreneur.

"I pick Manny Pacquiao by knockout. I think he will knock him out in 7 or 8. Manny just has too much for Cotto."
- Mike Tyson, Former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World

TIME IS ON MANNY PACQUIAO'S SIDE

Los Angeles, CA (November 5)-On the heels of his first primetime television appearance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live and his recognition as a 2009 Gusi Peace Prize laureate, boxing phenom Manny Pacquiao now finds himself on the cover of TIME Magazine Asia edition (see below) as part of a five page feature story on the boxing Champion that will be included in all editions (global and US market) of the magazine hitting newsstands this weekend.

With the population of Asia being the largest in the world, Pacquiao is overwhelmed with the idea of so many people seeing his face on the cover of such a prestigious magazine.

"I absolutely had no idea that when I started my career in boxing, to provide a better life for myself and my family, that I would now be where I am today and on the cover of TIME Magazine," said Pacquiao. "A fighter's dream is to win a world title and gain financial stability. But what is happening to me now is the most humbling experience of my life. It is a great honor for me to be the face of my people and to let everyone know we are a small but mighty country. Haye vs. Valuev: Logic Dictates Haye

What kind of example is he [Haye] setting for kids? It's embarrassing and I cannot accept it. --Wlad Klitschko

…I will defend my title and calm Haye down. --Nikolay Valuev

The Haymaker - David Haye, a.k.a “The Haymaker,” is brash, cocky, and an incessant trash talker (he called Valuev "a big hairy freak," "a circus act" and also said the champion "stinks."). He fights with an explosive style and sledgehammer power, and possess a physique that Jeff Lacey would covet. As well, he is a legitimate knock out artist with 21 stoppages in his 22 fights. His only loss came against Carl “The Cat” Thompson in a closet classic fought back in 2004, but that was then and this is now..

One More From the Road

Glen Johnson Gears up for Chad Dawson
By: Rob Tierney

Throughout his entire career, Glen Johnson has been upsetting Boxing's balance of power. Whether he's upending a promoter's plans for a megafight between more marketable opponents or painting blemishes on a rising upstarts career, the "Road Warrior" is notorious for playing the role of the spoiler. On November 7th, Johnson faces judgement day once more in front of what he hopes will be an unbiased jury in Hartford, CT.

On October 14th, I was afforded an opportunity to pick Glen's brain about next month's return bout with Chad Dawson. Here is what the former IBF champion had to say about his upcoming fight.

RT: Good Afternoon Glen. How have things been?

GJ: Very Good! Thank you.

RT: Your rematch with Chad Dawson is less than one month away. How has your preparation been coming along for this fight?

GJ: The prep has been great. I feel good. Training for the fight is just about complete and we are ready to cruise into Connecticut.

RT: How do you feel physically? For instance, how would you compare your current condition to your physical state prior to previous fights?

GJ: Mostly I feel great. In fact, I probably feel better now than I have before any of my previous fights. I'm thankful for the opportunity and I am looking forward to next month.

Vitali Klitschko Takes Cris Arreola into deep water and stops him on his stool in 10

www.doghouseboxing.com
By: Gabriel Montoya, MaxBoxing (Sept 27, 2009) Article provided by MaxBoxing

The crowd was on fire inside the Staples Center for the WBC heavyweight bout between titleholder Vitali Klitschko (38-2 with 37 KOs) and Cris “The Nightmare” Arreola (27-1 with 24 KOs) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. The stars were in abundance as Kobe Bryant, Russell Simmons, Leo DiCaprio, Mike Tyson, Pete Rose, Sly Stallone and a host of others gathered to see the biggest heavyweight fight to hit Staples since Lennox Lewis took on Vitali in his final fight.

Arreola entered to some angry sounding hip-hop as the crowd erupted to cheer on their hometown hero. He looked relaxed and ready in silver and black velvet. Vitali entered next to AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” and the crowd gave him a spirited welcome with a smattering of boos.

Predictions Arreola / Klitschko

Compiled By Dave Wilcox
This Saturday night at Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles, history can be made if Riverside, California’s own Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola can pull the upset of a lifetime and snatch the WBC Heavyweight belt from defending champion, Vitali “Dr. Ironfist” Klitschko. The eldest Klitschko is a heavy favorite in this one, and deservedly so. Arreola has shown the propensity to come into fights overweight and if he does it this time, the always in condition “Dr Ironfist” will make him sorry he did.

I personally saw Chris Arreola up close and personal ringside while covering the August 1st bout between Timothy Bradley vs. Nate Campbell for www.talkinboxing.comand believe me, he was horrendously out of shape.. All reports this week during the local workouts and at media events have Arreola in great shape. There is always a first time for everything I suppose, but I have my doubts. We will see Saturday night when the robe comes off.

As for “Dr Ironfist”, he is as cool as they come and we know what kind of shape he will be in for this bout. Whatever does transpire Saturday Night, I’m sure it will be exciting and that in itself is good news for the heavyweight division.

Let’s see what the team from “Talkin Boxing with Billy C” has to say about this one.

Danny Serratelli- It doesn't seem like anyone thinks its possible, but Arreola can punch. The kid loves to fight and he isn't totally one dimensional. He knows how to fight and he has a good amateur backround. He hasn't fought the big step up yet and he was on the deck recently, but he did his job and got the knockouts. Vitali will try to dominate like his brother does and Lennox did for years by dominating in a tactical matchup, but if Arreloa is in shape and he can make it into a REAL FIGHT he stops Vitali.

Amy Green-Woman’s Boxing Report In all of his 27 bouts, Arreola has never faced even a fighter remotely resembling the caliber of Vitali. If it were Vlad, I'd give him a better chance but with Vitali? No way. Vitali doesn't play well with others and the weapons he brings to the game- strength, precision, conditioning and focus are more than Arreola has in his bag of tricks. Vitali KO's Arreola in less than eight.

Emily Harney- The “Queen of Boxing” I am taking Klitschko by KO. Thank you.

The Circadian Ukrainian: Cure for the Common Nightmare

By: Coyote Duran

www.Convictedartistmagazine.com

If you’ve seen any of the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (and you have to hand it to Wes Craven. Say the title in your head a few times. It’s creepy, isn’t it?) films, you’re probably familiar with the dream-suppressing drug, Hypnocil; usually given to half-crazy, sleep-deprived teenagers. Once taken, a character can sleep soundly without having to worry about some sadistic janitor offing him in the middle of a REM cycle. Several sequels later would go on to render most moviegoers unconscious. The same has been and, very likely, will remain to be said about the heavyweight division. With this in mind, there’s little surprise that more than one contender over 200 pounds is dubbed “The Nightmare.”

Mayweather’s Dominance Demands Praise

By: Christopher Roche

The Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez bout pitted two counter-punchers matching up for a big payday, on their way to retirement. On paper, this was a boring fight, and it certainly lived up to expectations.

While both men received a nice bump in their respective 401(k)’s, it was Mayweather who would not go gently into that good night (apologies to Dylan Thomas).

Mayweather was expected to defeat Marquez, but his total dominance was breathtaking. Marquez was frustrated, cut, knocked down and out pointed at every turn. When Marquez connected against Mayweather, there was no effect.

Las Vegas, Nev. (Friday, September 18, 2009) – When Floyd Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs) last stepped into the ring in December of 2007 and knocked out Ricky Hatton in convincing fashion, it was hard to deny his claims of being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. One of the most difficult skills in life is for a human being to put himself in someone else’s shoes. We often laugh at personalities on television who, when confronted with a circumstance, make a decision that often defines them for eternity. Former University of Michigan basketball star Chris Webber’s infamous timeout in the 1993 NCAA Final comes to mind. Even if Webber went on to win 3 NBA championships and score 27,000 points, his presence would always be preceded by a decision he made.

Kessler vs. Ward: Breakdown and Prediction

By: Ted Sares-

He’s very fast. He throws nice jabs and then follows up with a right or left. He’s a one, two, fighter. He’s the best one-two combination puncher out there --Librado Andrade on Kessler.

I’m ready! -- Andre Ward

When Olympic Gold Medal winner Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (20-0) meets Mikkel Kessler on November 12 in Oakland, CA, he will learn that the “Viking Warrior: (42-1) is neither Shelby Pudwill nor Edison Miranda. What he will discover is that Kessler has fought far superior opposition, has solid technical skills, and has extremley heavy hands capable of sending Ward into Marin County Dreamland.

WARD PRIMED FOR KESSLER AFTER TAKING OUT PUDWILL

LESS IS MORE AS LIGHTER TONEY STOPS GREER AT PECHANGA

Temecula, CA (September 12, 2009) – In a tune-up for his Super Six World Boxing Classic confrontation with WBA Super Middleweight Champion Mikkel Kessler, NABF and WBO NABO Super Middleweight titleholder Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (20-0, 13 KO), Oakland, CA looked primed and ready after dismantling Shelby Pudwill (22-4-1, 9 KO), Mandan, ND in a non-title bout at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA. The bout was a co-main event telecast on “ShoBox: The New Generation” on SHOWTIME.

Ward, who thoroughly outboxed Pudwill in the first two rounds, dropped him with a left hook in the third round, which opened a nasty cut under Pudwill’s left eye. Smelling blood, Ward went for the kill and had his opponent in serious trouble. Knowing he could do serious damage, Ward signaled referee Pat Russell several times to put a halt to the shellacking and he mercifully did at 2:16 of the third round.
The key to the fight was “just staying focused,” Ward, America’s last Olympic gold medal winner, simplified. “The speed and the timing and I just had to stay focused. This kind of fight had a lot of build up to a bigger fight and I had to focus on this fight.

CRISTOBAL ARREOLA GUARANTEES HE WILL MAKE "HEAVYWEIGHT HISTORY" BY DEFEATING VITALI KLITSCHKO

CRISTOBAL ARREOLA:

“I’m gonna win this fight, I’m gonna do it. The only thing I can do is go in there and put on a great fight for the fans in Los Angeles.

“Am I in the best shape of my life? Come Sept. 26, I will be. We still have two-and-a-half more weeks left of training and I’ll be there. There’s still a little bit more work to do. Come fight time, I’ll be ready to go 12 rounds.

“I’ve worked my butt off to get here and I’ve always seen this day coming. The good thing about it is I’ve been working my way up slowly but surely.

Klitschko vs. Arreola: Breakdown and Prediction

By: Ted Sares

"It's going to be big¡ I'm going to get that [title], believe it. -- Arreola

He's actually a little bit heavier than me and a little bit shorter. He's a big puncher with very good combinations. I have to be ready for all 12 rounds, which means I need very good conditioning. I try to work in long distance, but I have to be ready for very short distance. --Klitschko

Vitali Klitschko (37-2 with a KO percentage of 92.31) meets Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola (27-0 with a KO percentage of 88.89) on September 26, 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. At stake is "Dr Ironfist" WBC heavyweight title.

Some fights are easier to break down than others. Taylor vs. Abraham is an easy one while Pavlik vs. Williams is not. This is a relatively easy one..

Style

While he no longer has the speed of a younger fighter, he appears to be just as strong as he ever was. He uses his Foreman/Liston- type jab to break down his opponents and then finishes the job with thunderous rights and an occasional hook. Unlike his younger brother, he lacks the Hearns-like snap to his punches, but he makes up for it with his heavy hands. While Wlad¡¯s KOs are cleaner, Vitali¡¯s are more punishing. He also can brawl when necessary as shown in his intense battles with Corrie Sanders and Lennox Lewis. Of course, that was then and this is now.

“HAMMERING” HANK LUNDY TO FIGHT ANTONIO ESPINOZA IN “BATTLE OF THE UNDEFEATED: SOMEONE’S 0 MUST GO” ON SEPTEMBER 26TH IN SOUTH PHILLY

PHIALDELPHIA (September 9, 2009)—On Saturday night September 26th, Two Lightweights will be fighting for more than the UBC World championship. They will be fighting to stay undefeated.

Rarely do two undefeated prospects get it on so early in their career but “Hammering” Hank Lundy and Antonio Espinoza will risk their perfect records by meeting for the UBC Lightweight title in a ten round bout at the Yesha Center in South Philadelphia. The card is promoted by Bionic Bull Promotions

Lundy of Philadelphia brings in a record of 14-0-1 with eight knockouts and is quickly becoming one of the top fighters in talent rich Philadelphia.

Lundy has received accolades for not only his lightning quick hands and fan friendly style but his willingness to take on all comers as evidenced by a recent stretch where he took on Darnell Jiles Jr. (8-0), Esteban Almarez (7-0) and Jason Cintron (10-0) within a five fight span.
Lundy is coming off a fifth round stoppage over Josh Beeman (4-3-3) on July 17th in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

“The called me some real bad names. He is going to get a real bad beating and then he is going to sleep", said Lundy.
“Hank Lundy is the most exciting fighter in Philadelphia”, said Lundy’s manager Ivan Cohen.

George 'Buddy Gee' Branch, former Newark councilman, dies at 80

By: David Giambusso/The Star-Ledger

http://www.njboxinghof.org/cgi-bin/henryseehof.pl?56

Jim Pathe/The Star-Ledger 2000 photo of former Newark City Councilman George "Buddy Gee" Branch.

NEWARK -- Remembered as a tireless champion of seniors and kids, former Newark City Councilman George "Buddy Gee" Branch died today in North Carolina, family and friends said. "George's motto was never look down on a man unless you intend to pick him up," his wife, Joyce Branch, said today from her North Carolina home. "He carried that through with politics and his life."

Branch was elected to the Newark City Council in 1982 and represented the Central Ward for 16 years before losing the seat to Cory Booker in a closely watched -- and at times acrimonious -- election. But Booker, along with friends and family, remembered Branch fondly today as a man who left the battle in the ring. "When the fight is over, it's over," Mrs. Branch said of her husband's philosophy.

Mayweather, Jr. vs Marquez: Taking The Path of Least Resistance

By: Christian Cruz

When former P4P numero uno and welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr (39-0-0) announced his sudden retirement after his last fight in 2007, it was met with criticism, and was seen as an eventual escape from facing real competition in a division littered with quality oppositions. His overall career, was actually widely criticized, even though it bannered a flawless record of no losses and world championship belts in three different classes. For someone blessed with abundant talent, great boxing skills, and good pedigree, Mayweather, Jr. was perceived to have been only looking for easy money fights instead of fighting the best available opposition, especially during his stint at the welterweight division. Potential big fights with Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and even Paul Williams were on the horizon after his victory versus Junior Welterweight champ Ricky Hatton, but as what happened, he retired prematurely.

Paulie and the Judges: What Can be Done?

By: Ted Sares - Boxers work too hard and take too many chances," he said. "It is important this sport is administered right. --Teddy Atlas

The first thing I tell people watching on television is to turn off the sound…The reason is you're being led, even if you're being led correctly, by what the commentators are saying --Bert Sugar.

The fact that many fight fans have been turned away by the blatantly wrong judging speaks to the degree to which these issues must be addressed. --David Chen

Controversial decisions are an inherent part of boxing and boxing has an abundance of systemic flaws, but blatantly outrageous scorecards need to be minimized.. Referring to the awful decision in the Emanuel Augustus -Courtney Burton bout in Michigan, Teddy Atlas said,” We've seen some horrific decisions, and we don't see them once every millennium…If you're any kind of boxing fan, you see them much too often. If it's several times a year, it's too much, but it's way beyond that. Every month, you're going to see a bad decision if you watch enough boxing." Taken from “Are there real answers to questionable decisions?” By Kieran Mulvaney Special to ESPN.com (April 6, 2006).

Juan Diaz Wins Controversial Decision Over Malignaggi

By: Danny Serratelli

People said Paulie Malignaggi was going into this fight with Juan Diaz to lose. They said he was making excuses about the size and padding in the ring, the purse, the judges, the catchweight, and the referee. It turned out that Malignaggi was speaking from the heart and telling the truth. His statements all proved to be true. Juan Diaz is a top fighter who came to fight and put the pressure on Malignaggi for all 12 rounds. Malignaggi fought his best fight since he captured the title against Lovemore Ndou.

Malignaggi moved well in a small ring and did not allow Diaz to get set for most of the fight. While he took some punches that appeared to be hard from Diaz, for most of the fight he moved well and displayed superior ring generalship. He used a dominant jab and a decent one-two behind great movement to keep Diaz off balance for most of the night.

Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez: “Have Gloves Will Travel”!

By: Ken Hissner, Doghouse Boxing (Aug 17, 2009)

Alex Perez is in his fifth year of boxing with only 10 fights. He claims “no one wants to fight me”. Bad enough he is 6:01 and 147#, but a southpaw on top of that. He had an outstanding amateur career with a 56-3 record fighting out of Newark, New Jersey.

What this writer hopes to do is stir up some interest to really find out just how good Perez is. I covered a fight of his at the Blue Horizon, in Philly. It was his 9th fight and he was fighting Darien Ford, 11-15, who had just fought to a No Contest with Mike “No Joke” Stewart, due to opening his forehead in the 3rd round of their fight. Prior to that Ford had wins over Ivan Robinson and former light welterweight champion Charles Murray. Perez had received a cut over an eye from a head butt and came back in the next round to receive another cut under an eye from a head butt. After the second one, he threw Ford to the canvas where he suffered a dislocated shoulder and couldn’t continue. The commission called it a No Contest. This was September of 2007.

After that he fought in December defeating Cory Peterson, 7-1, of Bay City, Michigan, at the Robert Treat Hotel, in Newark over 6 rounds. He had wins over Jonathan Tubbs and Patrick Byrd. “That was a tough fight. I hurt him but he kept coming,” said Perez.

It would be 15 months before he had his next fight. That was in March of this year defeating Laureano Laracuente, 5-1-1, over 10 rounds for the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) welterweight title. He had to go all the way to San Sebastian, Puerto Rico for that fight. “I scored a knockdown in the 5th round. I wasn’t sure if I would need a knockout to win, he ran the whole fight,” said Perez. Scores were 97-92, 96-93 and 96-94 in his favor.

His opponent, the unheralded Rafael Concepcion (13-4-1 with 8 KOs) came in 4 and half pounds over the 115 pound super flyweight limit, which at the lower weights is a huge deal. It showed as Concepcion took Donaire’s best shots, kept coming and landed some unexpected bombs of his own as these two warriors battled en route to Donaire taking a unanimous decision by scores of 117-111, 115-113, and 116-112.

ATTILIO "ROCKY" CASTELLANI

He may have been one of the best middleweights to never hold a title. He was a ranked contender for almost a decade but he received only one title shot. That was fairly late in his fine career. He fought in the days when there only eight weight divisions with ONE champion per division. By today's standards Attilio "Rocky" Castellani would have easily won a piece of a title.

Rocky was born on May 28, 1927 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He would die in the same town 81 years later. Rocky made his professional debut on February 14, 1944 fighting to a six round draw. He would lose his next two fights by knockout. It's very hard to believe at this point that Rocky would one day become a top contender. He was tenacious though and he soon began to win more then he lost. He was stopped in four rounds by Billy Kilroy in 1946.He would only be halted one more time in his career and that was not until 1952. In fact Rocky was only defeated by kayo only four times in 83 career battles. Seeing the competition he faced, that is quite amazing!

PACQUIAO-COTTO: CALLING IT AS IT IS

By: Christopher Cruz

Never say never, as they say. With the on—again off—again nature of negotiations of the Manny Pacquiao—Miguel Cotto war tentatively set on November 14, 2009 (MGM Grand in Las Vegas), nearly everyone must be reeling from all the contradicting headlines of major boxing and news websites in the past few weeks.

This hellacious turn of events began innocently enough. After initial demands were laid out by both camps, lone promoter Top Rank head Bob Arum went on a holiday with the probable plan to let the camps stew a bit and make some of the blatantly unrealistic demands go away naturally. A major sticking point cropped up and both parties stuck to their guns: The Catch-Weight. Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach insisted on 142-143 lbs. citing his ward’s last fight where he weighed in at only 138lbs. while Cotto’s doctor declared 145 lbs. as the lowest Miguel could go without getting severely dehydrated beyond safe levels.

At this point, Arum issued a virtual non-negotiable clause of the proposed fight by decreeing the fight will be at 145 lbs. and adding that both camps had already agreed to it. This move, depending on whether the fight gets made or not, will turn out to be either a stroke of genius or one of the biggest blunders a big-time promoter has ever made in the history of boxing.

Mike Jones and Jerson Ravelo Victorious in Atlantic City

By: Danny Serratelli

Welterweight contender Mike Jones, 18-0, 15 KO's won a unanimous 10-round decision over a game opponent in Lennin Arroyo, 20-10-1,4 KO's to defend his NABA title on Saturday night at Bally’s Atlantic City. Jones hurt Arroyo several times in the fight, but Arroyo showed a good chin and heart in going the 10 round distance with Jones who gave a very solid performance. Scores were 99-91, 99-91, 98-92. Jones has a lot of potential and upside and it will be interesting to see who he fights next.

The Brick City's Dominican Olympian super-middleweight contender Jerson Ravelo, 20-4, 12 KO's picked up his 20th win in the co feature. Ravelo took the fight on a few days notice and easily defeated Willis Lockett, 12-9, 5 KO's. It is amazing that Lockett used to compete at cruiserweight and even heavyweight, so his record is deceiving. Ravelo was the much bigger man and used a solid jab and good movement to keep Lockett off balance all night. After 8 rounds the scores were 80-72, 79-73, and 77-75. Ravelo was excited to be back in the ring and is eager to fight again as soon as possible.

Interesting scenarios and I'm sure we all have our opinions. We as fans are entitled to these opinions. My how they differ. We will never know if Sugar Ray Robinson could have beat Sugar Ray Leonard or if Willie Pep could have outslicked Salvador Sanchez but damn it sure is fun to argue about it ! Jones-Lacy PPV card complete four title fights featured Aug. 15 “Hook City” PPV in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss. (August 7, 2009) – “Hook City,” headlined by 8-time world champion Roy “Captain Hook” Jones, Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) and former 2-time super middleweight world title-holder Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy (25-2, 17 KOs), will feature four, exciting title fights.

In addition to being a well matched, entertainment valued promotion, “Hook City” has a slew of interesting storylines in each of its four PPV title fights on August 15th, which includes famous boxing “hookers,” wide-eyed dreamers, legitimate contenders and promising prospects.

The “Hook City” pay-per-view show, presented by Square Ring Promotions in association with Left Hook Promotions and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, is being distributed by Square Ring Promotions, Inc. at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network for a suggested retail price of $34.95, as well as on Super Channel in Canada.

Tickets, priced at $150.00, $125.00, $100.00, $75.00, $50.00 & $25.00 are on sale and available at all Ticketmaster locations by calling 800.745.3000, on line at Ticketmaster.com and at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum box office.

"We're proud to bring boxing fans such a great show from top to bottom," Square Ring Promotions CEO John Wirt said. "We have four title fights featuring three former world champions. 'Hook City' has a power-packed line-up of highly competitive fights and entertaining fighters."

Hall of Fame-bound Jones is known for possessing one of boxing’s all-time greatest hooks, while Lacy’s nickname is, aptly put, “Left Hook.” Which one is the better hooker? That will be determined in Aug. 15 when Jones defends his NABO light heavyweight crown in the 12-round main event. The loser will be busted in “Hook City.”

Two-time world champion Danny “Green Machine” Green (26-3, 23 KOs), the power-puncher from Down Under, dreams of fighting Jones later this year in Australia. His opponent in the 12-round IBO cruiserweight title fight is South American light heavyweight title-holder Julio Cesar “La Furia” Dominguez (20-4-1, 14 KOs), who has fought in relative obscurity in his native Argentina. All he’s been dreaming about is knocking out Green. Which one’s dream will come true? That, too, will be decided in “Hook City.”

NABO cruiserweight champion B.J. “El Peligroso” Flores (23-0-1, 14 KOs) has a display case filled with regional title belts. He’s rated as high as No. 3 by the WBO and No. 6 by the WBA and positioned for a major world title fight. Standing in his way in “Hook City” is former world title challenger Epifanio “Diamente” Mendoza (29-7-1, 25 KOs), the Colombian hit man who specializes in putting opponents to sleep, as well as knocking-off unbeaten contenders.

Two highly-regarded lightweight prospects -- Verquan “The Show” Kimbrough (21-1-2, 7 KOs) and challenger Jason “American Boy” Litzau (24-2, 20 KOs) -- go toe-to-toe in “Hook City” in a 10-round Special Attraction for the vacant NABF belt. Both have rich amateur pedigrees and Kimbrough is trying to get where Litzau has been and plans to return -- a world title shot. All bouts are subject to change.

Joan Guzman’s Roads to Recovery

By: Christian Cruz
www.Brickcityboxing.com

The recent news that Joan Guzman, (29-0, 17 KOs), from the Dominican Republic has just signed with Golden Boy Promotions should bring added excitement to a loaded division already filled up with promising upstarts, decent veterans, and an elite champion.

Boasting a perfect record of 29 wins out of 29 fights, and having won titles in the junior featherweight, featherweight, and junior lightweight divisions, Guzman is considered as one of the best fighters in the lower weight divisions. His athleticism, coupled with his fast hands and reflexes, makes him an elusive target for most of his opponents. His superior boxing skills allow him to dictate the pace of the fight and can box either from the outside or inside from time to time. Another strength is his chin, which so far, at this point, has proven it can take the best shots from any punchers Guzman has faced. Ironically, his vaunted power from either hand, which gave him the moniker “Little Tyson” during his stay at 122, seems to have left him since he moved up to higher divisions.

MOHEGAN SUN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING RESULTS

On Saturday night, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing put together an exciting seven bout card before a packed house at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT.

In the main event Star Boxing's IBF #2 rated welterweight, Delvin Rodriguez battled IBF #3 rated Isaac Hlatshwayo for the vacant IBF Welterweight Championship of the World. The fight was a rematch of their highly entertaining draw that took place back in November of last year.

The fight started well for Rodriguez as he was the much busier fighter, landing clean shots to both the head and body of the South African Hlatshwayo. In the second, a right hand staggered Hlatshwayo, but he showed guts as he continued to press forward, taking some big shots from Rodriguez in the process.

The Irony of Nate Campbell

Commentary

By: Christopher Roche

Nate Campbell’s biggest win of his career came in large part because his opponent was viciously cut, but Juan Diaz did not quit in that memorable bout in Mexico. Diaz fought like a true warrior, and under the strain of his breakup with Don King, the Baby Bull left everything in the ring, including his title belts.

Tonight, on Showtime Championship Boxing, the tables were turned on Campbell, and he was the one faced with a bad cut. Campbell, unlike Diaz, quickly opted out, as he pleaded with his corner that he could not see.
