FROM KING OF THE CAGE, TO THE SCORPION KING…

There is only one...Randy Couture

Mike Gawler, Danny Serratelli, Randy Couture & John McKenna

By: Michael Gawler

Randy Couture will be starring in this summer’s straight to DVD sequel to the 2002 smash hit “The Scorpion King”. This will be the first leading role for the estranged UFC Heavyweight champion, who recently co-starred in “Red Belt”. “The Scorpion King: Rise of Akkadian” will not feature Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as he reportedly turned down the chance to take part in the project. Michael Copon (Bring it On: In It to Win It; One Tree Hill) will play a young Mathayus and Randy will play the lead villain Sargon in this a prequel to a prequel.

[More:]

The film was shot entirely in South Africa, which didn’t take Randy away from his everyday training long enough to miss a beat. Couture stopped Gabriel Gonzaga shortly after filming in the main event of UFC 74. Since that fight, things took a slightly different turn with Randy.

Instead of fighting the next contender inside of a cage, he now fights inside a courtroom for what he calls freedom. Captain America walked away from his UFC contract stating several reasons for leaving including money issues and the UFC President Dana White’s failure to sign former Pride Champ Fedor Emelianenko. Randy claims the only fight that makes sense at this point in his career would be against Fedor. An ongoing legal battle will determine if that mega fight will ever happen or if Couture will ever fight again without fullfilling his obligations to the UFC.
