“I felt good, just a little rusty that’s all. Verno fought a good fight. He came in to do a job, but I feel I did what I came to do. I am upset with myself. I let myself down.”
VERNO PHILLIPS
“I hit more with my left. They told me not to reach in. He is hard to adapt to. He is sneaky. You lean in, he will hit you with a one-two. I just relied on my experience. I did my best and I am still in the top 10. I had harder shots. I felt like his people were booing him because they felt he didn’t bring it.”

Boston Boxing At The Roxy - April 12th! "Dat Be Dat" Nguyen vs Robert Daluz
By Peter Mark Heintzelman:
Richie Cappiello, of Cappiello Promotions, out of Brockton, Massachusetts, announced Monday
of this week, at a press conference held at the Sons of Italy, in Revere, MA, his April 12th Fight Card, captioned "Ethnic Invasion!" to be hosted at The Roxy, in Boston. The Saturday night main event squares off one of the country’s most exciting featherweights, "Dat Be Dat" Nguyen 11-1-0, 6 KO’s, against Robert "Don’t Lose" Daluz 10-10-2, 9 KO’s, of Providence, Rhode Island.
Dat Nguyen, now of Vera Beach, Florida, has been impressing boxing fans across the nation, with his boxing skills, tenacity, and desire to succeed. None other than Buddy McGirt works his corner, along with Jack Luce and Jack Matera. He’s hungry for a win, coming off the first loss of his professional career against Arizonian, Gregorio Torres, by split decision, in Arizona on August 31, 2007. Bet he won’t fight there again.
Although Nguyen is not looking past his opponent on April 12th, when Cappiello called him this week about the fight on April 12th being sanctioned, Nguyen, typical of his desire for more said, "Did you see Matt Remillard’s fight this past weekend at Mohegan Sun? I want a piece of him! Make that fight!" "That fights ready to be made," Cappiello said to the press conference, "get the word out!"

The Inwood Boxing Academy: Keeping the Youth of Washington Heights off The Streets
By: Matt Yanofsky
As you walk off the streets of Uptown Manhattan and down the steps at 651 Academy Street, the first thing you may notice is the diminutive size of the Inwood Boxing Academy. The Gym’s owner Joe Brender says even though his gym is small in size, it has a big impact on many at risk youths in the Inwood and Washington Heights area. “We are servicing the community as plenty of young people are coming to the gym and working hard. We have troubled kids joining the gym because their parents want them off the streets. We are training them to become boxers, but not fighters. We are their mentors and we are professionals”, said Brender.
Katsidis Drops a War to Casamayor
By: Christopher Roche
Joel Casamayor stopped Michael Katsidis in round ten, via TKO. Katsidis was down twice in round one, but he rallied back to take most of the middle rounds. Casamayor went down and out of the ring in round six, but he managed to stay viable and keep the action close.
Katsidis made the mistake of rushing Casamayor in round ten, and he caught a check left hook, which looked like a Mayweather Hatton replay. Katsidis got up from the shot, but he was finished, and the referee waved it off after a few more shots. The bout finished at :30 of round ten.
Casamayor, 36, moved to 36-3-1, 22 KO's. The 27 year-old Katsidis drops to 23-1, 20 KO's. This was a fight of the year candidate as both men spilled their guts out. Katsidis was ahead on two cards, when the bout was stopped.

Boxing Commentary: The Danger of Over-Hyping a Prospect
By Christopher Roche
Boxing Questions (and answers)
1) What does Andy Lee’s TKO loss to Brian Vera mean to his future?
On March 19, Joe Tessitore of ESPN published an article that quoted Emmanuel Steward’s prediction that Andy Lee would be the middleweight champion of the world “within twelve months”. The article also stated that according to Steward, over the next several years, Lee would prove to be one of the best middleweights ever.
Upon reading that, my eyes almost popped out of my head.
I wrote the following, on Brickcityboxing.com, two days before the Lee vs. Vera bout:

THE GARFIELD GUNNER
Brickcityboxing.com is proud to present this work by NJ Boxing Hall of Famer and Boxing Historian Bob Fernandez, Sr.
By: BOB FERNANDEZ, SR.
Tippy Larkin-the name sounds like that of a movie star or a super hero. He was handsome enough to be an actor but he wasn’t. Super Hero? Might have been, but his chin wouldn’t let him. What he was was a brilliant boxer-puncher in the lightweight and welterweight ranks for over a decade.
In the thirties and forties the sport of Boxing had many Italian-American fighters. Some of them took Irish names for the simple reason being Irish could help sell tickets and also help get the decent matches needed to move a boxer along. Our hero’s real name, Antonio Pilleteri chose the name of Tippy Larkin and would make it and Garfield, New Jersey famous. Born there November 11, 1917 he would become one of New Jersey’s most well known boxers.

Andy Lee Sqaures off with Brian Vera on ESPN's FNF
Has Steward inserted his foot into his mouth yet again?
By: Christopher Roche
Commentary
In a very intriguing match, undefeated Irisman Andy Lee will face off against once beaten Brian Vera on "Friday Night Fights" (ESPN2). Lee is 15-0, 12 KO's, and the full Emmanuel Steward hype machine has begun. Joe Tessitore released an article today stating that according to Steward, Lee will become THE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD WITHIN THE NEXT TWELVE MONTHS.
Steward, of course, is prone to inserting his foot into his mouth lately, (i.e. telling Jermain Taylor he was behind in the first fight against Pavlik or telling Klitschko he had to knock out Ibragimov), so should we really take him seriously?

“I’ve got to admit that, after the Cotto fight,” Malignaggi said, “I never thought that I’d get the chance to fight another great champion again. I believed in myself, but it was almost like I proved too much to everyone, that I had skills, but most of all, that I’m as tough as anyone who ever laced on gloves. I’m really grateful that Team Hatton looks like they’ll give me the opportunity to fight on Ricky’s big card in Manchester in May and then against him in the Fall in the United States.

Floyd Mayweather {Welterweight}
Mayweather’s impressive tenth round knockout of previously undefeated Ricky Hatton On December 8th makes him the clear cut number one fighter in the world. Unfortunately, Mayweather will be fighting Oscar De La Hoya in a rematch on September 20th (which real boxing fans don’t care to see) instead of taking on the undefeated and eager Miguel Cotto. This is part of the problem with out sport and Mayweather is the man to blame in this instance. Boxing would be in much better hands if “Money Mayweather” took on tough fighters such as Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito or Shane Mosley.
PART FIVE:You Be the Boxing Judge, Judging Professional Boxing for the TV Boxing Fan
Part Five: KEEP A RUNNING SCORE
By: Tom Kaczmarek
“THE MENTAL COMPUTER”
The most foolproof method of scoring the round while maintaining consistency and avoiding confusion is to immediately begin to calculate your score when the bell sounds and continue through the round, adjusting your score according to the action in the ring. By this I mean that when the bell rings, and the first action takes place, even if it may be one or two punches thrown, identify the fighter who is winning the round and mentally register the score at 10 - 9. If the other fighter responds and takes the lead, mentally place him in the lead at 10 – 9. If he continues to control the action, scores the more effective punches and is winning the round, mentally have him at 10 - 9.

Quotes and Results from Twin River: Manfredo, Jr. wins by TKO
POST FIGHT QUOTES
Peter Manfredo, Jr.: “He had never been stopped. He was tough. I hit him with a lot of good shots, but he wasn’t up to my talent level. His head was like a cinder block. He said he learned watching Vinny Paz fights. I hit him with some big shots. I didn’t look my best, maybe a 6 or 7 on a scale of 10, and I should have taken him out earlier. I was coming off a fight (loss to Jeff Lacy) that I left a lot of people down. You’ll see a lot better things in the future. I’m trying to make 160 but, if the money’s at 168, I’ll take it. I’m taking a serious shot at it (world title). This was a comeback fight and I’m headed in the right direction.”

Sometimes Good Things Happen to Nice People: James Moore gets his Shot on the big Stage at MSG
By: Christopher Roche
Editor's Note: There is a link to a recent interview with James Moore at the end of this article.
I have had the pleasure of interviewing James Moore, and I have met him on a few occasions. Moore is very likable, and he has an understated demeanor, but in the ring he is all business. Moore likes to crack to the body, and he is a hard charger. Moore is a very talented fighter with a huge amateur docket, but he has been admittedly disappointed with the level of opposition he has faced in his undefeated professional career.

PLEASE DON'T PASS THE SUGAR
Brickcityboxing.com is pleased to post NJ Boxing Hall of Famer Bob Fernandez's contributions. This post is about "Sugar" Ray Robinson.
By: BOB FERNANDEZ
He was tall for a lightweight, very rangy, with supple muscles and slope shoulders that come with terrific punchers. He could box brilliantly and if need be, set down and trade bombs with the best punchers in three weight divisions. In short, outbox the boxers, outslug the sluggers and even out bolo the bolo punchers. He also was the possessor of an iron jaw, having never been stopped in 85 amateur and 201 professional bouts. Only once did he fail to finish; and that was due to heat prostration in a bout where the referee had to be replaced because of the intense heat. With all the fine qualities, plus the iron jaw, he had to become a boxing legend. And he was.

The first couple rounds were close, with both men landing crisp shots. However, towards the middle rounds, Mtagwa started finding his mark landing big overhand rights. The action continued until the final bell with Mtagwa landing most of the big shots, but it was the steel chin and the aggressive style of Valtierra the kept the fight close official scores were 96-93 twice and 97-92 all for Mtagwa.

Eileen Olszewski: “Hawaiian Mongoose” Hungry for Titles
By: David Pambianchi
With about 5 different Title Belts, conflicting point systems, weight classifications so close that a
fighter can eat a cheeseburger deluxe and move from one division to another, and home advantages that make you wonder if the judges saw the same fight, who’s the Champ? Women’s Boxing manager, David Selwyn, claims to know the answer.
“Many promoters and managers match their fighters with low risk Chopped Liver,” Dave’s way of saying “Soft Matches,” fighters with little skill and/or experience against tougher opponents. Fearless of any risk he states, “We look to fight the best. In her class, Eileen Olszewski is the strongest fighter out there with endurance to back it up and will defeat anyone in the Flyweight (112lbs.) Division.”

Mike Arnaoutis
Vinny MaddaloneA sea of blue and white flags filled the arena as Arnaoutis' fans banged their drums and waved their flags as they cheered on their fellow compatriot to an impressive victory. Arnaoutis showed great boxing skills and pin point punching throughout. "Mighty Mike" was relentless the entire fight as Cuello tried to figure out how to slow down the ever pressing Arnaoutis. Cuello fought a brave fight and never stopped trying in the fast paced bout but Arnaoutis' skill and will was just too much to handle. All three judges scored the bout 119-109 for Arnaoutis who improves to 18-2-2 (9 KO's), while Cuello slips to 15-6-2 (11 KO's).
Curtis Stevens"What we witnessed tonight was the re-birth of "Mighty Mike", said star boxing Chief Joe DeGuardia. " I truly believe that Mike will become the world champion most boxing experts predicted he would be, in the very near future. Also, the sold out venue shows that boxing can thrive when you give the fans what they want!"

PART FOUR: YOU BE THE BOXING JUDGE! - Judging professional boxing for the TV boxing fan
By: Tom Kaczmarek
SCORING SYSTEM
The 10 Point Must System
If there is a controversy about the decision in a fight, it is usually as a result of the way the scoring criteria is applied against the 10 Point Must System by the judges. If the judges or the folks out there scoring fights while they’re watching television lack the opportunity to attend training sessions where the elements involved in the 10 Point Must System are reviewed and discussed in order to clarify each aspect involved, consistency in scoring will be diminished. Another factor involved is the concentration level of the person scoring the fight while applying the elements of the 10 Point Must System to the action in the ring as it develops during the round. This is a very important factor. If the judge’s attention is diverted momentarily from the action in the ring, it could reek havoc with the way the round will be scored.

I’ve Never Seen a Fighter Like Israel Vazquez
By: Tim Crowley
This is just one fan’s perspective, but I think Israel Vazquez is the most extraordinary fighter I’ve had the privilege to watch.
It all began with the first fight.
I remember watching the fight, knowing Marquez and Vazquez were the prominent fighters of their weight, and that Marquez was moving up in weight to challenge Vazquez.
And I remember being amazed at how tactical and beautiful the savagery was. These were not club fighters or old blood and guts warriors putting it all on the line for pride and pride alone, these were masters of boxing. Individuals who had trained their whole lives to perfect the art of inflicting maximum damage against the highest caliber of opponents, and they were meeting face to face on a level I can only compare to the welterweight era of Leonard, Hearns, Duran, and Hagler.

WEIGHTING FOR CASTILLO! TIMOTHY BRADLEY WEIGHS 143.5 LBS AT SEVEN-DAY WEIGH-IN WHILE CASTILLO GOES MIA FOR WBC SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE ELIMINATION BOUT!
TOTOWA, NJ (March 4, 2008) -- Could it be déjà vu all over again?
It appears that the scales of justice may be unbalanced for the upcoming World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight title elimination bout between undefeated No. 1 contender TIMOTHY "Desert Storm" BRADLEY and No. 2 rated JOSE LUIS CASTILLO, the former two-time WBC lightweight champion. Bradley (21-0, 11 KOs), from Palm Springs, Calif., weighed 143.5 lbs at his seven-day weigh-in, well below the 147 lbs. maximum allowed. Castillo (56-8-1, 48 KOs), from Mexicali, Mexico, in his last WBC report, did not include his seven-day weight, a clear violation of WBC rules. Castillo, who has a history of not making weight for fights, reportedly weighed 151 lbs at his 30-day weigh-in, leading to speculation that he may be suffering from dietary inflation. The weight limit for their March 8 fight in Cancun, Mexico is 140 lbs.

Pawel Wolak: “I train so hard because I want everything to go perfectly on March 15th. I put in my time at the gym, so I expect to get something good out of my career. I love the hard work. I love fighting and testing myself. When I walk down the aisle to the ring at MSG, my fans will go crazy. There will be chaos. But I handle pressure well. Pressure pushes me and motivates me. I perform best under pressure. It makes me fight harder.”

ROBERT GUERRERO RETAINS IBF FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE WITH SCINTILLATING EIGHTH-ROUND KO OVER JASON LITZAU
Photos by Daisy Rosas
LEMOORE, Calif. (March 1, 2008) - Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero produced perhaps the finest performance of his career Friday when he successfully
defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) featherweight title with an exciting eighth-round knockout over Jason "The American Boy'' Litzau in a thrilling one-sided war in the main event on ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME.
Southpaw Guerrero (22-1-1, 1 ND, 15 KOs), of nearby Gilroy, Calif., fairly dominated Litzau (23-2, 19 KOs), of St. Paul, Minn., before dropping him twice in the eighth round.
The Ghost Celebrates His WinAfter the second knockdown, the referee stopped the contest at 2:25.
Making the second defense in his second stint as IBF 126-pound kingpin, Guerrero floored the challenger the first time with two left hands approximately 40 seconds into the session. A three-punch combination ended the evening for Litzau.
"It went how I expected it to go,'' Guerrero said. "A lot of fans came here and a whole lot more were watching on SHOWTIME to see me put on a good show and I think I did. The support I get is just incredible and I really appreciate the fans that come to see me fight or watch on television.
"I expended a lot of energy at the beginning throwing a lot of power punches. A lot landed, but some missed, too. Between rounds, my corner told me to just go out and relax and box more and let the knockout come and sure enough they were right and it did.
Guerrero wins on Shobox/Powell victorious on FNF
By: Christopher Roche
Jason Litzau added Buddy McGirt to his team, and he hoped to box and improve his defense, but the "American Boy" was haunted last night as Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero dominated Litzau and stopped him in round 8.
Litzau was sent to the canvas twice in round 8, and after the second knockdown, Litzau rose to his feet, but stumbled back down. The fight was stopped. The 24 year-old Guerrero improved to 22-1-1, 15 KO's. Litzau, 24, dropped to 23-2, 19 KO's. The bout was held at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, California.
