David Carey Named USA Boxing Athlete of the Month for January

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Heavyweight David Carey (Anchorage, Alaska) has been named USA Boxing’s athlete of the month for January. Carey recorded an impressive victory in the USA vs. Mexico Dual, January 18 in San Diego, Calif. The 6-foot-5-inch heavyweight pounded out a convincing 27-16 decision over Mexican Olympian Javier Torres in the opening event of 2008. Carey enjoyed a six point lead as the final round began, but continued to pour on the points over the final two minutes to claim the victory.

In addition to recording a victory in the ring, Carey conducted himself as a champion throughout preparations for the event, consistently focusing all his energy on training for the dual. The January award is the first such accolade for Carey, who began boxing in 2003 after taking a trip to King’s Gym in Oakland, Calif. Carey has taken part in several elite training camps at the Olympic Training Center, most recently the USA vs. Mexico preparatory camp in Colorado Springs, Colo. He has enjoyed success at the national level over the past three years despite having to travel from Anchorage, Alaska to Washington state often for competitions and training.

Carey will take part in a training camp with the United States Olympic Team at the Olympic Training Center prior to competing in the 2008 U.S. Future Stars National Championships, March 9-14. The father of two works as a Life Skills Coach in Anchorage.

USA Boxing, as the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing, is the United States’ member organization of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) and a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
