Paul Williams is set to Stop Quintana’s Comeback Bid

Interview By: Christopher Roche

When IBF Champ Kermit Cintron pulled out of the scheduled bout against WBO Champ Paul “The Punisher” Williams, some observers suspected that Williams could suffer a letdown. After all, Williams and his team watched a huge welterweight unification bout go up in smoke.

Williams promises there will be no letdown. Carlos Quintana was eventually named as Williams’ new opponent, and Williams took the change in stride. He spoke with me over the phone, from his training camp in Puerto Rico. I asked Williams how he is keeping his motivation level high, given the aforementioned change in circumstances regarding his next bout.

“This is an opportunity for me to get back in the ring and showcase my skills. Of course my motivation level stays the same because this is a big fight for me,” said Williams, who is promoted by Goosen Tutor. “I look at any fight as a big opportunity fight for me, so I just have to stay focused.”

It's a great time for Boston sports fans. The Red Sox, 2007's World Series Champions, are weeks away from spring training. The Celtics, at 34-7, may be the best team in the NBA. And the Patriots, fresh off an AFC Championship victory, are a game away from completing the most magnificent season in the history of sports.

Despite all of the success, however, roughly 1,000 fight fans filled the Mansfield Sports Complex right outside of Boston on Saturday to watch local prospects and a pound for pound female stalwart throw down.

In the first fight of the evening, Juan Carlos displayed a combination of speed and power knocking out Noe Inunza of Southern California. Early on, Inunza got awarded a knock down, but as the replay showed, it was clearly a slip. As the rounds went on, Velasquez overwhelmed Inunza, landing power punches from various angles. Smelling blood, Juan Carlos applied pressure landing a violent flurry that sent Inunza to the canvas in which he never recovered. Referee Gerald Scott ended the bout at 1:56 of the fourth round.

Malignaggi Wants Hatton, but Would Welcome the “Baby Bull”

By: Christopher Roche

The opinions vary widely regarding IBF Light Welterweight Champ Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi. Critics point to his brash pre-fight banter, outrageous ring attire and lack of knockouts to diminish his accomplishments. Supporters point to his tremendous heart, beautiful jab and nifty footwork as evidence that he belongs in the elite bracket.

Members of Team MalignaggiMalignaggi & Team Members at the Union City Boxing Club
After winning a difficult first title defense against mandatory contender Herman Ngoudjo, perhaps the most refreshing thing about Malignaggi is his willingness to get right back in the ring against top competition. The 27 year-old Malignaggi disagrees with “gimmie” match-ups. He wants to test himself against the best the world has to offer, and in that regard, he is a true throwback.

Boxing Commentary: The TV Problem in America

By Christopher Roche

Boxing Questions (and answers)

1) When will boxing address a main problem with the sport: lack of mainstream broadcast exposure?

Paul WilliamsIf Williams beats Quintana, Roche wants to see Williams vs. Mayweather

How many of you have watched fights on youtube.com, because a great prospect you read about is never on television? Am I the only boxing fan who watches mainstream fighters on a network that broadcasts exclusively in another language, wondering why there is no reverse SAP button? How many of you search the Internet for links that promise to display simulcasts of fights from places like Ireland or Germany? What do you do when the link ultimately fails?

The above behavior is symptomatic of something that boxing people refer to as “the sickness”, but it is actually perfectly normal behavior for avid sports fans. Hungry fans devour content faster than Mike Tyson can blow through 100 million dollars. Unfortunately, boxing is not feeding the beast, at least not here in America.

Union City Boxing Club Celebrates its Grand Opening

By: Christopher Roche

The proud history of Hudson County, NJ boxing received a shot in the arm last Thursday, as the ribbon was cut on the new Union City Boxing Club. James J. Braddock, who did most of his training in Union City, would have been proud of this Cinderella story.

Joe BottiJoe Botti in the brand new ring

“The most important thing is that these doors remain open!”

Those were the words of Joe Botti in his emotional dedication speech, which he delivered from the center of the new ring. Botti, who is one of Union City’s Finest, also doubles as a boxing trainer and mentor, and he was one of the driving forces behind opening the new gym. Nearly 100 onlookers, many of whom were energetic children and young adults, helped celebrate.

Also in attendance for the main event were IBF Junior Welterweight Champ Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi, IBF #7 ranked welterweight Roberto Garcia, Jose Rosario of USA Boxing, Henry Hascup of the NJ Boxing Hall of Fame and John Lynch of Pound for Pound Promotions.

Mayor StackIBF Champ Paulie Malignaggi, Mayor Brian Stack & Joe Botti

The key guest for the evening, however, was Union City Mayor & State Senator Brian Stack. The Mayor worked closely with Botti throughout this process of keeping the gym in Union City, and together they ensured the boxing program’s survival.

“If it was not for this one man [Stack], this program would not be alive today,” Botti said.

Mayor Stack’s efforts were memorialized with a championship belt, and Botti called him “our champion”. The new location came about after months of searching and negotiating. The old gym was in the basement of a building marked for gentrification and is currently being torn down. Fortunately, the new and much improved location came to fruition, and as the Mayor proudly donned his new belt for pictures, a new chapter in the history of North Hudson boxing began.

The fight at Madison Square Garden between Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad was very entertaining, at least until the half way point. Tito won the first two rounds and after those 2 rounds it looked like Roy may be in trouble. My first thoughts were of great warrior Arturo Gatti who recently seemed fine during training and coming into his fight with Alfonso Gomez, but after a few rounds it was apparent that Arturo was a step behind all night. Roy looked like he couldn’t pull the trigger, and appeared that he would have to rely on his will and intelligence more than his skill.

When Harold Sconiers of Tampa, Florida, looks in the mirror these days he doesn’t see the journeyman heavyweight with a 15-17-2 (10 KOS) record that most other people do.
sconiers
What he sees is the dynamic, hard-hitting heavyweight who made it to the finals of the 1996 Olympic Trials, and began his pro career with six straight knockouts and one decision victory.

Since being stopped in the first round by then undefeated Bermane Stiverne, who had won all nine of his fights by knockout, in February 2007, Sconiers has completely reassessed his life and career.

By: Matt Yanofsky

In Front of an energetic crowd at the Mecca of boxing, Roy Jones Jr 52-4 (38 KO’s) cruised to a unanimous decision victory over Felix “Tito” Trinidad 42-3 (35 KO’s). Trinidad attempted to start off quickly by aggressively throwing punches at the eight time world champion. Jones rebounded in the second by landing quick clean shots and blocking Trinidad’s punches. Jones began taunting Trinidad during the fourth round and continued to frustrate the pride of Puerto Rico who was still unable to land any clean punches, but made a valiant effort to attack Jones.

"BRING ON THE TITANS"

TRINIDAD VS. JONES

POST-FIGHT QUOTES
FELIX “TITO” TRINIDAD

“I took off two years and eight months. I take nothing away from Roy but if I could have avoided the KOs, I think I would have won the fight. He was very fast and strong and threw great punches. I have no excuses.

“He demonstrated speed and took my body punches. I fight for my fans and the people of Puerto Rico.

“Roy Jones was very fast and he fought a good fight. I think he won the fight but not by such a wide margin.

“I will decide if I fight again or not. I will speak to my father but I will make the decision as to whether or not I will fight again.”

ROY JONES JR.

“All my fans around the world said I was done. He took a lot of hard punches.

Jones said to Trinidad, “I can’t believe you stayed in there 12 rounds with me. We had a great fight and everyone said we were too old.”

“I tried to put him away a few times but he slipped a lot of my good punches. I had a wonderful camp and great sparring partners.

“It was a great fight. I can’t believe he stayed in there for all of those rounds for me.

“He was slipping a lot of my good punches and I felt like I was missing knocking him out by inches.

“I jammed my knuckle sometime during the fight. He’s got a pretty hard head.”

FLOYD SR. LOOKING FOR RESPECT

John Martinez
Boxingrealm.com

(19Jan08) Moments ago, I spoke with none other than trainer extraordinaire, Floyd “ Joy” Mayweather Sr. The ever confident pugilist coach shared his thoughts on his much anticipated return to the corner of the Golden Goose in boxing, Oscar De La Hoya. Here is what the self-anointed “ best trainer in the world” had to say about his new high profiled assignment.

JM: Floyd, will you conform the rumors of your return to the De La Hoya camp and that you’ll be in his corner for his next fight May 3rd on HBO?

FM: Yes. That is correct.

JM: Do you have any insight on who’ll oppose Oscar on May 3rd?

FM: No I don’t. But Oscar called me the other day and I told him that I thought Carlos Baldomir would be a good opponent for him because he’s tough and durable. I told him that I thought Baldomir would be a good test for him coming back.

Roy Jones and the Chin-He-Had

Preview of "Bring on the Titans"

By: Tim Crowley

They’re back.

When Roy Jones was knocked out by Glen Johnson in ‘04, we said, “this looks like the end,” and when Felix Trinidad was unceremoniously outpointed by Winky Wright in ‘05, we said, “there’s nowhere for him to go now.”But now it is 2008, and two of the most important fighters of the late 90’s, early 2000’s are getting back in the ring to show the world what they still have left.

The question will be, how will the two look when they fight. This fight could be very compelling because the historic significance of the two fighters, as well as the possible match-ups to come after. The accomplishments and accolades of their pasts can carry both of these fighters into bigger fights down the road if — and this is a big if — they look sharp in the ring.

Trinidad has been inactive now for a solid three years, and in his last fight against Winky Wright, he fought at 160 lbs., and did not carry it well. His prime was fought at 147-154, and he looked downright lethargic and clumsy at 160. The fight this Saturday will be Trinidad’s first fight at 170 lbs.

THE ‘MOST FEARED MAN’ IN BOXING

NOT SINCE A PRIME MIKE TYSON FOUGHT HAVE OPPONENTS BEEN SO RELUCTANT TO STEP IN THE RING WITH HIM: WBO WELTERWEIGHT CHAMP PAUL "THE PUNISHER" WILLIAMS

Los Angeles, CA (January 15, 2008) – In the early 1960s, brutish Charles “Sonny” Liston terrorized boxing’s heavyweight division with his paralyzing stares and knockout power in both of his 14-inch fists, prompting his trainer, Johnny Tocco to label him a “killing machine.”

A decade later came George Foreman, a Liston disciple and 1968 Olympic Gold medalist. He kayoed 26 of his first 27 opponents in the 1970s and succeeded his idol as the sports’ ‘most feared big man.’ That same decade also saw one of boxing’s all-time most fearsome “pound for pound” warriors emerge in Panama’s Roberto Duran. Known as “Hands of Stone,” Duran used his intimidating tactics and superior skills to dominate the lightweight division.

Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, an unusually tall welterweight with a devastating right hand, took the welterweight division by storm in the late ‘70s-early‘80s by putting to sleep 29 of his first 32 opponents.

Edison Miranda liquidates David Banks in 3 rounds!

By: Brad Marchetti, Ringside

Edison Miranda loosens David Banks head at the Hard Rock by way of a 3rd round cold blooded KO. Sitting ringside for your B-day watching roundcard models and KO’s at the Hard Rock isn’t all bad. I found out an answer I was looking for. Was Miranda a big puncher or a great one? Great one.

Edison Miranda sent a clear message to boxers that want to challenge him: if your name isn’t Kelly Pavlik you could have some brain cells evaporated. If Rocky Marciano’s KO punch against Jersey Joe killed 30,000 brain cells, Miranda’s bazooka right hand KO bomb killed about 29,000 of Banks' cells. Edison “Pantera” is a dangerous man folks. Miranda has steadily improved his boxing skills in recent years and he was able to take advantage of Banks' willingness to stand and counter by overpowering the smaller Banks, 15-4-2, 2 KO’s.

“Contender 3” star David Banks looked to confuse Edison “Pantera” Miranda in the early going last night on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”. Miranda, now fighting at super middleweight, methodically stalked Banks, and arguably gave away the first two rounds. Banks showed some nice counter work in the early going, and the self-taught Oregonian proved he has decent skills.

However, those first two rounds were elementary because two-thirds of the way through round three, Miranda unloaded a right hand missile that detonated on the side of Banks’ head.

Paulie Malignaggi Defends His Title Against #1 Contender Herman Ngoudjo

By: Danny Serratelli, ringside
www.Doghouseboxing.com

“The Magic Man” Paulie Malignaggi, 24-1, 5 KO’s defended his title last night scoring a unanimous decision over the IBF #1 contender Herman Ngoudjo. The fans got their money’s worth in a competitive bout in front of a packed house for Brooklyn’s own Paulie Malignaggi at Bally’s in Atlantic City, New Jersey. After a flawless performance back in June when he captured the IBF light welterweight title from former champion Lovemore N’dou, Paulie was brought back down to earth, but showed the poise and ring generalship of a champion in winning many of the close rounds and ultimately the fight.

Malignaggi defeats Ngoudjo, retains title.

"Magic Man" keeps IBF belt with unanimous decision win.
By: Mike Indri
Retired Boxers Foundation

Atlantic City - Defending his International Boxing Federation Jr. Welterweight belt in front of a standing room crowd in the main ballroom at Bally's Casino tonight, Paulie Malignaggi did what he does best - he boxed. While not the most fan-friendly type of a fight, or the most exciting, Malignaggi was effective and did what he had to do to win, and to keep his well earned title belt.

Malignaggi Decisions Ngoudjo in a Tough Title Defense

By: Christopher Roche

In the pre-fight interview, Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi said that despite holding the title, he still feels like the hunter, because he is chasing super stardom. Tonight, in Atlantic City, NJ, he was the hunted, as Herman “The Black Panther” Ngoudjo tried to pry away Malignaggi’s IBF belt in a close, tough fight. In the end, Malignaggi warded off Ngoudjo’s charge to retain his title via a unanimous decision.

Malignaggi, 27, opened the fight with 19 consecutive jabs before landing a right hand at the one-minute mark. Malignaggi controlled the first frame with ease, as he closed the round with a left hook-right hand combination. The action continued in Malignaggi’s favor in the second, as the champion feinted and jabbed. Ngoudjo clearly respected Malignaggi’s speed, but Ngoudjo slightly stepped up his aggression.

Malignaggi vs. Ngoudjo Preview

By: Brad Marchetti

Paulie Malignaggi vs Herman Ngoudjo will fight a 12 round minor title fight in New Jersey, marking Malingnaggi’s first defense of his 140 Lb. title against the hungry Canadian Ngoudjo. Paulie is a budding superstar in boxing with his outgoing persona and superlative boxing skills. With the fight being held in Atlantic City it is apparent that Malignaggi is trying to fill the superstar void left by the recently retired Arturo Gatti. BodogLife.com has Paulie Malignaggi as a -800 boxing betting favorite.
Paulie MalignaggiNgoudjo, 16-1, 9 KO’s, earned his shot at the title with a disputed decision over hard punching Randall Bailey. The 28-year-old Cameroonian is a former Canadian Olympic representative that is technically very sound but not very good in any one area. Ngoudjo employs a high guard with a tight defense that he uses to set up his volume of punches to the head and body. Herman has excellent stamina, good power, usually wearing down opponents late with combinations to the body. Ngoudjo’s sole loss was a split decision to teak tough Mexican contender Jose Luis Castillo. Trained by highly regarded trainers Otis Grant and Howard Grant, Herman knows how to execute a game plan and he will surely use a stiff jab to offset Malignaggi’s speed but at times he is too defensive minded.

Friday Results from ESPN & Showtime

By: Christopher Roche

Espn was at the Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa, OK for some Allan Green home cooking. Unfortunately, Green did not deliver the fireworks everyone predicted, and he plodded to a ten round decision over Rubin Williams. The 28 year-old Green kept looking down at his feet, similar to his tendency in the Miranda bout. Green, who recently suffered health problems, improved to 26-1, 18 KO's, and the 29 year-old Williams of Detroit, dropped to 29-3-1, 16 KO's.

MALIGNAGGI: AN ITALIAN-AMERICAN HERO

“Magic Man” reminiscent of Will-O-the Wisp
By: Declan Hughes

He’s brash, he’s cocky and he can box like Fred Astaire can dance. That means gracefully for those who don’t know who Fred Astaire is. I’m talking about Paulie Malignaggi.

This Saturday, January 5, 2008, IBF Jr.Welterweight Champion, Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, 23-1 (5 kos) will try to put on yet another great boxing exhibition against Herman Ngoudjo, 16-1 from Canada. Malignaggi Dials up Ngoudjo Tonight on Showtime’s Championship Boxing

By: Christopher Roche
Brickcity/Tigerboxing Exclusive

Malignaggi makes his first title defense tonight from Bally's, Atlantic City.

I recently caught a clip of Paulie Malignaggi fighting in the New York City Golden Gloves, back when he was a novice. Malignaggi was introduced to the crowd by the ring announcer as “An 18 year-old telemarketer from Brooklyn”. The television announcers awkwardly stumbled over the pronunciation of his last name. The then rookie from Bensonhurst was a long way off from becoming the IBF light-welterweight champion.

A lot has changed for Malignaggi since those humble beginnings at the 1998 Golden Gloves, but one thing remains the same, Malignaggi has a style all to its own. What immediately jumped out in that amateur clip was Malignaggi’s enormous confidence in his hand and foot speed. Even as a green amateur, Malignaggi stood in the ring with his back straight and his chin out, almost daring his opponent to hit him. Then, as is still the case almost 10 years later, when his opponent swipes at him, Malignaggi seemingly disappears for a moment and then reappears with a stinging left jab or, when he is fully healthy, a hard straight right.
