KEA boxing successfully started to expand their horizons last night, putting on a solid 8-bout show from the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. KEA has been doing shows in NJ consistently for almost 3 years and in their first venture outside the Garden State, they featured good talent in an action packed night highlighted by several brutal knockouts.

In the main event former USBA featherweight champion Rogers Mtagwa 23-11-2, 17 KO’s, appeared to be packing bricks in his gloves en route to a 2nd round KO over Terrance Roy. Roy came to fight, but could not handle Mtagwa’s punching power and was dropped several times en route to the KO. Roy valiantly rose from each knockdown until the referee had seen enough and stopped the contest in round number 2.

In the co-feature, which turned out to be the fight of the night between undefeated light-heavyweights, Tyrone Watson, 6-0, 3 KO’s, came out on the winning side of a narrow majority decision, 57-57, 59-56 and 58-57 over Dyah Davis, 9-1, 5 KO’s. In the mild upset, Watson picked up points for being the aggressor and outworking Davis at times.

Davis to his credit, tried to fight his fight as more of a boxer and counter puncher, but never fully established a rhythm. Davis had Watson out on his feet in round number 3, but Watson was able to weather the storm and get back into the fight. Watson now owns wins over Aaron Pryor’s son and Howard Davis’s in his short 6 fight career. Davis, who did not have an amateur career showed some good skills, but is still learning on the job.

Plainview, New York’s welterweight, Tommy “The Razor” Rainone, 7-0, 2 KO’s, made this trip into Ronny Glover’s back yard in South Carolina to grant Glover a rematch. Rainone had stopped Glover in the1st round earlier in his career; however, Glover sought out this rematch claiming illness hindered his performance the first time around in New York. Rainone took an extra round in dispatching of Glover, but this performance was far more impressive. This time, Glover came to fight but Rainone was too sharp for him and once he hurt Glover, Rainone did a great job finishing him off.

In other action, O’Neil Bell’s brother, middleweight, Omar Bell, 3-0, 2 KO’s, took little time in turning the lights out for Kevin Barlett, 0-1. Bell caught Barlett clean in the corner and the fight was over the moment the knockout punch landed.

Heavyweight, Kevin Burnett, 6-1-1, 4 KO’s, who surely has the looks of a fine heavyweight prospect, landed hard blows throughout the 1st round against the game but out gunned Derrick Martin, 1-3, 1 KO.

Ronnie Glass, 2-0-1, 1 KO, won by second round knockout over Michael Ward, 0-1 in a welterweight bout. Light middleweight, Anthony Young, 4-2 stopped Sean Chavis, 0-1 in round number 1. Finally, in a very competitive exhibition bout Henry Dukes drew with Chris Archer.

KEA is set to go again on Saturday June 23 with their New Jersey series “The Brawls at the Birchwood”. KEA’s Andre Kut is also interested in returning the The Citadel and is eyeing a potential date in August to have KEA Boxing return after the NJ
