Interview With Bobby Gunn

By: Matt Yanofsky

I had the pleasure of speaking with IBA Cruiserweight Champion Bobby Gunn 16-2 13 KO’s. Gunn is currently campaigning for a world title shot in the near future. Gunn was also recently in talks to fight Thomas Hearns before a contractual issue. Fans can reach Bobby at TeamGunn.Com

MY: Bobby what’s up? Your fight with Shelby Gross was ruled a no contest. You dropped Shelby twice with the referee giving him an exceptionally long count. Gross’ post fight drug test was also not released. This fight was a high profile mess. What exactly happened?

BG: What happened was the most disgraceful thing I have ever. WBC President Jose Suliman uses this fight in his seminars as how NOT to referee a fight. The referee not even certified and lied about his credentials. The time I dropped him was for 14 seconds the second time was 19 and they never counted him out. He also hit me while I was on the ground eleven times! I tried for a rematch and could not get it.

[More:]

MY: You where scheduled to fight the legendary Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns. A victory for sure would have made you an everlasting name in the division. What happened with that fight?

BG: Couldn’t work it out with his people. They did not return my phone calls plain and simple.

MY: The Cruiserweight division has had a lot of top fighters such as O’Neil Bell, Jean Mark Mormeck, Steve Cunningham, and Enzo Maccarinelli. Who do you consider the cream of the crop and which of the elite would you like to fight most?

BG: All of the above. I am working on a fight with Maccarinelli this summer over in England it is in talks right now.

MY: You had an 11 year layoff from 1993-2002 what caused such a long layoff?

BG: I had seven or eights fights in that time that for some reason was not picked up. I fought and boxrec.com is not showing it! I also had managerial problems in the past.

MY: When are you looking to fight again?

BG: I am working with my team to fight in January and then defend my title in March. In June I would love to fight Maccarinelli for his WBO title.

MY: Bobby thanks for your time. What do you have to say to your fans and the readers at BrickCityBoxing.Com?

BG: You guys are a great site! Thanks for the support. I would more then anything love to bring the WBO Title back to Jersey! There are the guys that talk about it and do it and I am willing to do it! I’d also like to thank Kyle White my personal trainer who has got me into the best shape of my life he will be with me until the end.

There is a reason for the contract problems with Hearns and Gunn. Hearns does not want to fight a real deal champion! This might be a problem in the future with other fighters. Gunn is that good!

Give Shelby a call Bobby! He is more than ready to knock you out again!! It is not Shelby's fault the referee lied? Shelby followed the count, got up fought hard and then knocked you out. Sometimes fighters get excited and get caught up in the moment. Shelby feels bad for throwing punches at you when you were on the ropes, but he did not realize you were down. I have heard that you did a lot of dirty stuff in your title victory? So don't try to play all innocent!

F*ck Shelby "Da Bonetown Bum" Gross. He is not even worthy of talking about...so SEE YA, LOSER! Across the pond over here in the U.K. there is a whirlwind of talk about Gunn fighting Maccarinelli for the WBO Title on the HUGE Calzaghe-Manfredo card this April. BOY OH BOY, we TRAVELERS sure hope Enzon and Frank Warren have the balls to allow this fight to come off because it would be FIRE WORKS!!! Gunn is the berriest decon gadgey EVER so live with it! Go, Gunnn and KO them all!!!!
