Interview With Dmitry Salita

By: Matt Yanofsky

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with top prospect Dmitry Salita 26-0-1 15 KO’S. Salita is currently waiting to hear from HBO about an upcoming TV card. Fans can chat with Dmitry at http://myspace.com/Dsalita

MY: Dmitry, what’s up? How did you get into boxing? I know boxing is not very big among the Orthodoxed Jewish population.

DS: I started boxing when I was 13 at the Starret City Boxing Club. I did karate in the Ukraine. After watching Rocky and HBO Boxing I was motivated to go the gym and start boxing.

[More:]

MY: On March 18th, you had a tough fight. You had to settle for a draw against Ramon Montano. What would you have done differently if there was a rematch?

DS: I was sick coming into the fight. It was hard to make weight and I wish I didn’t take the fight. In the rematch I would be myself and being healthy and strong would take care of the mistakes.

MY: You have faught at both Super Lightweight and Welterweight. Which weight are you more comfortable with?

DS: I still consider myself a Super Lightweight although it hard for me to make weight. Welterweight is easier to make but for the time being im a Super Lightweight.

MY: I know you are a big Jewish boxing historian, in the earlier days there were many great Jewish fighters. Who do you think was the greatest of all time?

DS: There were a lot of greats but my favorite was Barney Ross. He was a great hero, great person, and great fighter. I red a book titled Barney Ross which was about his life. It was an excellent book.

MY: There are a ton of top fighters in New York around your weight such as Yourself, Vivian Harris, Paulie Malignaggi, Edgar Santana, and Gato Figueroa. Where do you rank yourself among them?

DS: I think I am on top of the list! Now is the time to prove it. There are talks to have me fight some of these guys. I feel myself and Paulie are on top because we came up through the amateurs winning the Golden Gloves and making our name.

MY: Dmitry thanks for your time. What do you have to say to your fans and the readers at BrickCityBoxing.Com?

DS: Thanks for the support. This will be an exciting year for me, my fans, and my critics. Thanks and ill see you at the fights.

whats up Dmitry, after reading a story i found of you growing up with your amature carear, and being a pro at (6-0), i thought i would leave a message asking your opinion on what my best move would be to make. I just turned 20 years old in November. I was fighting when i was 18 and had one match that i did loose. Ive been running 7 miles everyother day and training hard. if i want to become pro eventually how should i set up my amature carrer, and what age would you think would be too old to become professional?
