Interview With Jerson Ravelo

By: Matt Yanofsky
I had the pleasure of speaking with former Olympian and Super Middleweight prospect Jerson Ravelo 17-2 12 KO’s. He is currently training for an upcoming fight in his home country of the Dominican Republic. Fans can chat with Jerson at Myspace.Com/JersonRavelo.
MY: Jerson what’s up, in your last fight you fought against top contender Allan Green. The fight was on ESPN2 and was featured on the Manfredo/Spina Undercard. You ended up getting stopped in the eighth round. Is there anything you wish you would have done differently?
JR: I wish I would have shown up. I didn’t show up. I was not the Jerson everyone is used to seeing I don’t even know what the heck went on. Allan Green is not a better fighter then me but he was that night. Green knows the Jerson he fought that night wasn’t the best Jerson. I doubt he would give me a rematch unless he was forced to!
MY: Before the Green fight, you had fought only three rounds in the last two years. Although in your three fights before Green ended in first round stoppages, do you wish you had more rounds in before such a big fight?
JR: It’s always good to have rounds. When you don’t really have rounds its hard especially if it goes the distance. It did start to show that I need more rounds.
MY: You are currently being trained by a friend of mine, Nasser Nettles. He has trained many top fighters such as former world champion Frankie Toledo and title challenged Omar Sheika. How has having such an experienced trainer helped you?
JR: Nettles is a very good trainer, he is helping me a lot. He focuses on my training. My other trainers didn’t work out because of lack of focus but Nettles is an awesome trainer and it’s working out very well.
MY: In 2000, you represented the Dominican Republic in the Sydney Olympics. How did it feel to lead your country in such a prestigious event?
JR: It felt great; I was trying to represent the USA. I was robbed in the Olympic trials against Jeff Lacy which was in his home town of Tampa they said he won but everyone knows it was a home town decision. I decided to represent my country of the Dominican Republic so everything worked out.
MY: In your next fight, do you plan to have a comeback fight or do you want to go right after another big name fighter like Allan Green?
JR: I don’t need any comeback fight! If Green wants a rematch ill fight him immediately. I need some rounds, but I don’t want to fight any bums you know? Why would I fight a guy who id take out in one round like I have been doing. I need someone to push me and give me rounds.
MY: Jerson, thanks for your time what do you have to say to all your fans and the readers of BrickCityBoxing.Com
JR: Keep supporting me I appreciate it. If I fight in your area check me out. Don’t judge me on the Allan Green fight. That was a bad night for me but there will be a lot more great performances to come!
