18 Wins and 1 Giant Loss!!!
By: Christopher Roche
Whether it is Arturo Gatti, Bobby Czyz or the 2007 Giants, the state of New Jersey is used to being the underdog.
Well, this year we pulled off the impossible. The New York Football Giants (who play in NJ) upset the New England Patriots by a final score of 17-14 in Super Bowl 42.
Bill Belichick (Defensive Coordinator) and Tom Coughlin (Wide-Receivers) were both coaches on the 1990-91 Super Bowl winning Giants, but when Bill Parcells resigned so late in the year, it was too late for the Giants to retain one of those greats as head coach. Belichick went to the Browns, and Coughlin went to Boston College. The Giants were set back at least five years because of the Tuna's actions.
Fortunately, Coughlin eventually came back.

Despite the fact that The New Jersey Ironmen (10-6) were upset by La Raza de Monterrey, and lost 17-12 loss (6-10), the fans at the Prudential Arena were treated to an exciting game and definately got their money's worth. The Brick City fans welcomed special guest and honorary captain IBF Junior Welterweight Champion, Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi to Newark.

Malignaggi gladly made the trip over to the Brick City with promoter Lou DiBella and his team from Brooklyn to serve as honary captain and to kick out the ceremonial first kick to Ironmen goalkeeper, another local guy who is almost legendary, Kearny New Jersey's Tony Meola. Malignaggi, a huge soccer enthusiast, recently spent a week in Italy training with A.C. Milan in preparation for his most recent title defense in which he won an exciting unanimous decision over Herman Ngoudjo.

The Giants pulled out the win in overtime 23-20, off of a Lawrence Tynes 47 yard field goal. Eli Manning played great tonight, in the subzero temperatures, as he went 21-40 for 254 yards. He also suffered several drops, as the football was rock hard.

In Defense of the Bowl System, Plus One
By: Christopher Roche
The final NFL week in New York brought two NFL storylines: 1) “Giants’ Fans are Selling Their Tickets for the Regular Season Finale” and 2) “Should the Giants rest their starters because they cannot improve their playoff position?” Despite the Giants playing the undefeated Patriots, the game lacks any urgency beyond the symbolic.
Those two storylines exemplify a huge credibility problem for the League’s regular season, and most of this week’s games are completely meaningless. Unless your rooting interest lies in New Orleans, Cleveland, Tennessee or Washington D.C., week 16 feels like the last week of the preseason.
College Football’s Bowl Subdivision (Division 1) is the only major sport where every single contest has potential life or death meaning, and regular season victories are the gold standard. While this season has been wild, the importance of maintaining the Bowl system is evident, because under the current system, every game is must win, and losing one or two games clouds a team’s destiny and could prove fatal to title hopes.
