MOVIE REVIEW : " POOR BOYS GAME "

By: Jim Amato
This 2008 boxing movie is what I call a " sleeper ". The cast is headed by veteran actor Danny Glover who plays George Carvery. George is a former trainer whose son is beaten up outside the ring and left permanently disabled. The young man accused of this crime is Donnie Rose ( played by Rossif Sutherland ). Rose served nine years in prison for the crime but upon being released he is challenged to a boxing match by prospect Ossie Paris ( played by Flex Alexander ) , a friend of the Carvery family. This is the perfect revenge setting George and his distraught wife but the plot takes some interesting twists and turns.

BOOK REVIEW; " MY VIEW FROM THE CORNER " BY ANGELO DUNDEE WITH BERT RANDOLPH SUGAR. ( FOREWARD BY MUHAMMAD ALI )

By: Jim Amato

I started following boxing with the emergence of Cassius Clay in the early 1960's. Whether you liked Clay or not he must be given credit for revamping the business of boxing. He was to boxing what the Beatles were to music. Clay who would later become Muhammad Ali changed the face of the sport.

A Boxing Movie For The Ages; "GENTLEMAN JIM"

By: Jim Amato

There have been so many wonderful boxing movies that have graced the big screen over the decades. It was very difficult to decide what my favorite pugilistic film was. After much thought I decided on the 1942 production of " Gentleman Jim ".

Let's Get A Movie...

By: Jim Amato

Since this is the holiday season you may have some time off of work to relax and watch a few movies. There are several classic boxing movies that are available at your local video store to fill a void left by a lack of live boxing action.

I'm going to list some of my favorites that you may find entertaining. "Gentleman Jim", the story of James J.Corbett is my personal favorite. Errol Flynn is great as Corbett and Ward Bond is even better as John L.Sullivan.Next up would be Paul Newman as Rocky Graziano in "Somebody Up There Likes Me".Then Robert DeNiro in the story of Jake LaMotta titled "Raging Bull".

Introduction
“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

- Henry David Thoreau

Everybody has a dream of some sort, but few people are fortunate enough to be provided an opportunity to devote their energies to pursuing it. Whether your dream is boxing or ballet is irrelevant to whether or not you’ll be interested in my story, because it’s not about boxing, it’s about dreams.

When I began writing this book I assumed it would be an insider’s view of professional boxing. To be sure, that element exists, but the boxing is just a lively background to the actual story, which is an insider’s view of somebody who decides to “advance confidently in the direction of his dreams.”

Malignaggi and DiBella Impress at the Hoboken International Film Festival

Film Review

By: Christopher Roche

Photo: Chris Farina/Top Rank

Back in the 1980’s, the State of New Jersey’s slogan was: “New Jersey and You, Perfect Together”. That slogan can also be applied to the marriage of boxing and film. There is no other sport that lends itself so gracefully to the silver screen, and that is one reason why I attended the premiere of Magic Man, a documentary starring Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, at the Hoboken International Film Festival.

Last night Hoboken, NJ, which is a favorite destination for brickcityboxing.com, hosted renowned boxer Malignaggi and promoter/producer Lou DiBella for the initial screening of their collaborative documentary film. Malignaggi is an intriguing and charismatic subject, and the film captures highlights of his career leading up to and including his epic battle with Miguel Cotto. In between the boxing highlights, there are sprinklings of sidebars with Malignaggi sitting on his front stoop in Brooklyn, NY, as well as behind the scenes action from press conferences, nights on the town, doctor visits, training sessions and dressing room footage from after the Cotto fight.
